Interesting article about the explosion of popularity of EDM and financial lengths some are going to book the big DJs. Its focused only on Vegas, but it may have ramifications for festivals. Some thought that Roo was a little light on EDM this year (although Skrillex was a big get from a popularity standpoint), and I wonder if money has something to do with it. It seems as though competition in Vegas is driving up the cost of booking top DJs to $200-300K per show, but I wonder if festivals are paying similar amounts. Roo definitely focuses less on EDM than other large festivals and its possible that the money needed to book bigger DJs will widen that gap.

Though the price of of laptops has steadily declined, the materials needed to design proper rodent costumes have skyrocketed. Give these guys the $300,000 an hour they deserve to play beats. I, for one, cannot wait for the new era of Bonnaroo bottle service. Great article.

haha bonnaroo bottle service...
ROO was definitely light in EDM this year - and i was perfectly fine by that, i'm a DJ myself...not getting paid nearly what these dudes are - but a festival especially of bonnaroo's caliber is about the eclectic selection of tunes across many genres...i think it's great having limited EDM but pulling in big names for that sake - skrill was cool, but i'm sure someone else could have filled his spot for the same price if not 2-3 other decent DJ's ... IE someone off of Pretty Lights' Record Label like Gramatik, Michal Menert, SuperVision? idk

Honestly, I think Roo had great EDM this year, but they had god-awful scheduling and mostly ruined their LNs this year. Had Little Dragon, SBTRKT, and Santigold (not technically EDM) been LN it would have been a whole different ball game.
For me personally, even compared to Lolla, Roo had a pretty solid EDM year. Outside of Kaskade, and maybe Justice, the only EDM act that I wish Roo had gotten that Lolla booked was TEED. Again, it seems like scheduling was the culprit.

I am extremely happy for the increase in popularity in EDM and more important the popularity of Dubstep, because this means burners are over dubstep and with very little dubstep in BRC, this was the best year for music on the playa! Thank you Skillerx! Thank you!

I went to North Coast Music Fest this past weekend. Let me tell you walking from stage to stage and hearing basically the same Womp Womp sound really makes me excited for the fall of this music. It all sounds too similar (yes there are exceptions). When the backlash on this starts, this music is going to die rather quickly in my opinion.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good womp womp from time to time, but I think it has gotten a little out of hand with the amount of crap that is out there.
Someone like Skrillex getting paid that much money for what they do is insane to me. I get that he's a humongous draw and all that but damn.....
Artists dont get paid on their skill though, they get paid on the popularity and the draw they bring, ticket sales, etc.
Yea, I get that. I mentioned understanding that he's a huge draw. Still seems crazy to me. But I think a lot of top celebrities/artists are grossly overpaid.
Meh, not really when you incorporate the COSTS of those stage productions, and the fees for the crews and travel, etc. Skrillex himself didnt see anywhere near that much.

Well I came into this thread and was told someone guessed Skrillex got paid $800,000. Without thinking I just imagined Roo giving him a check for $800,000 and that was it. I'll use my brain next time.

Totally leaving aside the "DURR THEY JUST PRESS PLAY" argument, there just simply isn't enough diversity in the EDM sphere to support these kinda payouts for very long. The top earners are way too interchangable.

Phi already explained that he pressed play on two different cds and that took a lot of skill and post-screamo training. Plus he brought a spaceship which made his set well worth at least $8,000.

I agree. The decline will start in a few years. But I think it will be interesting to see if the popularity decline of EDM will lead to a decline in popularity of music festivals as well. I think one reason that festivals have become so popular over the past few years is the resurgence of EDM music. The kids want to party and hear some womp womps. I think of them as the "independent voters" of music festival attendance. You can't count on them to go to festivals every year. If it stops being the cool thing to do, I wonder if they'll keep coming.

I'm really not trying to say "EDM is a fad" per se. I think Skrillybear is an interesting enough artist (and I went through I huge dubstep phase when I lived in London in 06, cause that's just what you did then), but this just isn't an $800k stage production.
