Cdevaney, It is unfortunate that she has to be denied the best three, but sacrifices have to be made. It largely comes down to her statement at one point that seeing them 1->6 was the right way to do it.
LLL, Yes, ma'am though I almost want to hear what the consequences would be first. ;D
Gron, III is definitely the best of the three prequels. II is okay. I is terrible.
CKS (and Phyllis), Casablanca and Cool Hand Luke are great movies. Citizen Kane, on the other hand, is vastly overrated (suck it, Gibran).
JP, Out of that list, City of God should be a priority. I was really surprised by how much I liked it especially after how high my expectations were going in.
Karosko, You are really dropping the ball on this. So disappointed in you.
I have never seen the Godfather series either. And I am ashamed to admit this one, but I have never seen The Big Lebowski. I have seen all of the Indiana Jones films though, many times.
Tomorrow in my CMLT4300 "Modern and Postmodern Literature and Art" class, I have a test that is 15% of my final grade and it is 100% over The Big Lebowski.
02/08 Tool 02/11 Jeff Mangum 02/17 of Montreal 02/29 Blind Pilot 03/31 The Naked & The Famous 05/14 M83 and I Break Horses 05/19 Flaming Lips, Young the Giant, Dawes and AWOLNATION 06/07 Bonnaroo 2012!!! 06/13 Roger Waters 07/28 Toadies
Haven't seen, but feel like I should've by now: Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, The Sound of Music, Citizen Kane, Cool Hand Luke
All of those are excellent, but I do think Citizen Kane is the best... overrated, maybe if you're calling it the greatest movie of all time... it's still a 5 star classic if there ever was one.

My campaign against Citizen Kane actually started as a result of the AFI list that put it as the best movie ever. I don't think it's a terrible movie by any stretch. I just don't think it is a "best movie ever" kind of movie. For me, it stands as more of a movie you appreciate on the technical merits compared to others at the time rather than a movie you actually enjoy.

Dave, Dave, Dave. Citizen Kane is like the Pet Sounds of film.
They should both be applauded for their flawless technical merits, yes, but neither employs technique just for the sake of being artsy. Their technical accomplishments are done in such a brilliant way that they are totally in service to the larger work of art (and, in the case of Kane, the story) and bring form and function into allignment. I can't say enough about what a uniquely brilliant film Kane is from both a technical AND narrative standpoint (both of which are in service to the other), and its genius should and does stand alone in my eyes.
I agree with and applaud AFI for naming it the best film of all time.
I don't think a "greatest movie of all time" exists... I do think that there are some selections that are up for discussion, many of them obvious... and one of them is definitely Citizen Kane on those aforementioned merits alone. Tons and tons of people think Gone With The Wind is overrated, or even sucks... I think it may be overrated (but I as well think many movies are overrated... Fight Club is my definition of an overrated movie, but I know tons of people who will defend it to the death). However, I loved Gone With The Wind for what it was, seeing it for the first time a year ago... like you were saying with Citizen Kane, Dave, I think it's one of those movies that has been incredibly dated but cannot be overlooked for its scope, production, and much of its acting. It was a ground breaking, epic of a movie, and I was thoroughly entertained throughout, I cannot bring up much of an argument for it not being among the "greatest movies of all time"... especially if there are people willing to throw Fight Club into the discussion (elsewhere).
Let's see... what popular, supposedly good/great movies have I not seen?
Avatar Belle De Jour (I have it on DVR, just haven't watched it yet) The French Connection (my dad used to watch it all the time when I was really young, but I never sat and watched it) Amarcord The English Patient Flags Of Our Fathers Letters From Iwo Jima Bridge On River Kwai The Dirty Dozen The Longest Day
There are more that I imagine should be obvious to me, but I can't think of them... I've seen most of the AFI 100. I'm noticing that there are a lot of early war films I have not seen.
That's about it, I've seen a lot of movies. Especially the classics.
Dark knight rises has barely been out on dvd for a few weeks. Hell, I haven't seen it yet, and I worked in one of the buildings it was filmed in. 2 embarrassment units

I have seen a ton of early war movies because my granddad kept the tv on TBS all day every day. For instance, I have seen Stalag 17 50 times easily.

Haven't seen Raging Bull either for that matter. I've neglected the majority of Deniro's work pre Cape Fear really. He's more Ben Stiller's jerkstore father-in-law to me than anything. That's a problem.
raging bull + taxi driver + citizen kane = 8
Would be higher, but it's a small list, and sometimes a couple movies slip through the cracks
This bumps up to a 9 if you haven't seen casino. You've seen casino, right?

I'm callin' out your bullshitass scoring system, Eric. Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, and CK are all 10/10 "why haven't you watched that" points.
And yes I'm getting irreverent in the very same thread that's callin' me out for some straight-up bush league sh*t.
As far as 90s movies go, Fargo>The Shawshank Redemption
Boogie Nights > just about anything you can name from that decade. IMO, of course.
I would give Fargo the very slight nod over Boogie Nights myself. But I'm not as adamant about it as I am that No Country for Old Men is better than There Will Be Blood
I would say both Fargo and Boogie Nights are easily better than Shawshank, though. I would probably even say The Thin Red Line is better than Shawshank.
If you want to spend a million hours watching a movie just to absolutely hate the stupid bitch of a main character at the end and be pissed off at the entire movie, watch Gone With The Wind, but don't say I didn't warn you.

I vote you not be allowed to post in here until you rectify your Indiana Jones omission.
I'm going to watch the movie! I planned on it a couple weeks ago, had it up and loaded and everything but got busy with schoolwork. I have a lot of sh*t due in the coming weeks (haven't even had time to go see Lincoln or Looper or Skyfall, all of which I really badly want to see), but I will watch it before Christmas. You have my word. I will make good on our deal.
If you miss the christmas deadline, I'm doing what I should have done ages ago and adding Last Crusade to the deal. Of course, I don't doubt that you'll want to watch it immediately after raiders anyway.
