Gogol was awesome!! Omg I was so excited to see the whole crowd just digging it! Great start to what is sure to be an amazing weekend! Enjoy yourselves, everyone! See you tomorrow!! I'll be volunteering in the beer ticket tent Saturday and Sunday! Come see me!! =D
The setting was nice. You could see the rolling hills surrounding the college and Nelsonville. Having trees inside the concert area, to provide shade, also was a big plus. We camped Thursday-Sunday, and we found our neighbors to be very friendly. We hung out with them off and on throughout the weekend, and it was obvious they were big music lovers. One of the neat things I quickly discovered at the festival - and enjoyed - was its embrace of all things local. The food vendors were awesome and having a local brewery, Jackie O's, on tap was a stroke of genius. It also was nice how they charged no more than $5 for Jackie O's extremely heady IPA and a specially-brewed brown ale. As for the music, I couldn't have been happier, despite some brief storms the delayed things Fri and again Sat. Wild Belle, for me, was a cool discovery on Thursday, and Gogol, as phiercelyphresh said, was awesome, as usual. I never get tired of their gypsy punk passion and energy. Saturday brought more great music. My wife and I dug Wooden Indian Burial Ground and He's My Brother She's My Sister. Cat Power also impressed me, as did Lee Fields and the Expressions. Sunday, however, was my personal highlight, as Sharon Van Etten into Calexico into Mavis Staples into Wilco was damn near perfect. The only downside was only hearing a handful of songs from Mavis Staples, due to the weather. Still, Sharon Van Etten ended her set with a stunning "More Love," and the Calexico set in with Wilco for "California Stars" couldn't have been any better. It was goosebump inducing. My wife and I will be back for a second year next year.

Had a great time at this little fest. Loved their moves to reduce their carbon footprint/promote sustainability. The winds took out both of my EZ Ups, oh well. But we had some great neighbors who helped to save our other stuff. A ton of VW's there, which always makes me happy.
Music wise, the great surprises I found were Shilpa Ray, and Reigning Sound. Calexico was fantabulous. Fell asleep in the rain on the back porch of the No-Fi cabin on Friday night and got a little impromptu performance from Cotton Jones and a lady with a guitar. Really cool moment.
I was on the rail for Wilco and they looked asleep at first, but they played Muzzle of Bees right off. I have a deep love for that song, and have rarely heard them play it. I was pleased to say the least. I brought the big flowers I used to propose to Pat Sansone at Forecastle. He saw them and smiled at me, I waved and then became ridiculously embarrassed. Such a teenager.
We ran into John at a little record stand. Chatted with him a bit. He took our picture with his little 35mm camera and we took this one. Whorechimp and John Stirratt. As Lila described it, a creepy cross between Tom Waits and Ron Perlman.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
