Wilco, John Prine, Reigning Sound, Cotton Jones, Wooden Indian Burial Ground, Nick Tolford & Company, The D-Rays, The County Pharaohs were announced early Saturday night.
Anyone else ready for the best little festival in the US?
Wilco (Saturday) John Prine (Sunday) Gogol Bordello (Thursday) Mavis Staples Sharon Van Etten Calexico Jonathan Richman Reigning Sound The Coup Wild Belle He's My Brother, She's My Sister Screaming Females David Wax Museum Brown Bird Field Report Endless Boogie Anais Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer Michael Hurley Lucius Cotton Jones Wooden Indian Burial Ground Old Light Wesley Bright & The Hi-Lites Nick Tolford & Company The D-Rays County Pharaohs
My wife and I are in. I always talk about going, but haven't, even though it's just 45 mins away. Wilco is a deal sealer! And by the way, Nick Tolford plays a lot around Columbus. He's worth checking out.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
Been there the last two years. It's one stage the size of Which then another stage the size of sonic and then there are intimate acoustic performances inside a 100+ year old cabin that seats about 20 people. Everyone there is very nice and extremely into the music. The festival is to benefit Stuart's Opera House which is a historic building in Nelsonville that is completely non-profit. Please attend and help support this culturally significant organization. I've met the people in charge and they are very good people who really care about music.
It's a four day fest. Thursday was free for all to attend, but I think that might change this year.
Anyway, it's set up so that there is a major headliner each day and a late night on Friday and Saturday.
I've gone for the last three years. I'm an Athens, OH resident which is only about ten minutes from Hocking College (the festival site). This little festival is incredible and I'm not just saying that because I'm a local I'm saying it as a fan of live music. I won't go into detail on the setup as colecrouse already did so above but I can say that it's an incredibly intimate setting the whole weekend. The guy who runs Stuart Opera House and the festival organizer Tim Peacock is an incredible dude who pulls in some amazing acts year in and year out. The Flaming Lips headlined in 2011 (got to meet Wayne Coyne after the show, awesome guy), Andrew Bird and Iron & Wine this past summer, and now Wilco and John Prine. I've volunteered every year that I've gone and interacting with the folks that run the fest is truly special and they are amazing people who are dedicated to the patrons of the fest in making sure they have an incredible time. Very diverse group of artists and I've yet to see a bad set (aside from Lee "Scratch" Perry this summer, but that's another story) but I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of live music. Check it out!
I left Scratch Perry after about 30-40 minutes in. It was just strange because he came out and just started talking. No one could really understand what he was saying, and he kept trying to get us to yell things, but no one could understand what he actually wanted us to do. Then I left. I assume it got worse after that.
Well as colecrouse mentioned he was just completely rambling. He had a bassist on stage with him, a DJ, and a percussionist (if I remember correctly). About fifteen minutes into the set Perry just kind of walked off stage with no warning, nothing, and his band just fell silent. As in they were well into their set and everything seemed okay sound wise and Perry just vanished. The DJ didn't provide any type of sound while he was gone and the entire band just kind of stood on stage staring at each other. Just complete and utter awkwardness. Not to mention the fact that Perry was wearing a top hat with some candles lit on top, wax was melting down his back and to be honest I was kind of concerned for his safety. Now I've seen a lot of bad acts but this one takes the cake hands down.
I was not there for the Scratch Perry incident, but I had a friend who was working security backstage. He told me Scratch Perry was all kinds of smoked up, and people were having a difficult time getting him on stage. He said it was one of those shake your head moments. It sounds like his performance was more of the same.

As mentioned in the earlier posts, Stuart's Opera House is a non-profit organization. They raise money through multiple fundraisers throughout the year so that they can continue to bring this little corner of the world some very talented acts. They're dedicated to bringing fresh new music to our little population in the hills and any visiters are welcomed with open arms. The more we spread the news about this amazing festival, the more likely they are to be able to expand. With that said, this year they have organized 'It all Adds Up', a fundraiser with incentives directly related to the festival. I wanted to post the link here just to give people an opportunity to learn more about the organization and help be a part of making this festival happen. =) stuartsoperahouse.org/all-adds-p-270.html

There are a lot of ridiculous rumors floating around the area about the remaining line up. If what I'm hearing turns out true then this NMF is going to be one for the decade.
No, nothing of that nature. Neil Young is said to be decent friends with the guys at Stuarts Opera House (the ones who put the festival on) and is rumored to be coming and doing a one off solo show at the fest. Now last winter it was rumored that they were reaching out to him to be there this past year but nothing came of it and told them he'd shoot for 2013. A lot of the town folk here in Athens, OH are involved with Stuarts/volunteering at the opera house and this is where I received the info. This individual would have been completely BSing me so take it with a grain of salt. Just fueling the internet rumor machine!

It sounds completely plausible. I spoke to Dan (one of the guys in charge at Stuart's) at last year's festival while wearing a Neil Young shirt, and he told me that Neil is their top artist get and that they ask him to play every year.

They do try to get Neil every year and every year they have trouble; I'd be surprised if this was the year, though I don't doubt that it will happen eventually...

love love love this little festival. early bird tix are only $90 right now. you just can't beat the lineup that they put together every year for that price. if you live within a somewhat reasonable distance of southeast ohio and are on this board, this fest should be a no-brainer. i was hoping for mmj or jim james, but neil young?!

phiercelyphresh, you have to believe. Neil will never play as long as you doubt him.
I'm giving consideration to this festival, really on the fence as I already have a lot of travel and fests planned this year.
It's not a camping fest, correct? If anyone can give me any more information, it would be most appreciated. Hotels, etc., that type of thing.
I would most likely be driving from Annapolis, MD, which doesn't seem terribly far (although I will admit to anything over 180 miles testing my limits behind the wheel)
