This lineup is probably the deepest I've seen in recent years form any festival.
I think last year's lineup was a little deeper with artists I wanted to see, but this year has more "holy sh*t" names for me. Merzbow is the Paul McCartney of noise bookings, and I've never seen him. I've also never seen Wolf Eyes, Charalambides, and Charlemagne Palestine. Those four alone would be worth the ticket.
This is truly a unique festival, at least in North America. What other lineup would put Big Boi, Local Natives, Merzbow, Chatham County Line, Inter Arma, Lapalux, and Pig Destroyer on the same poster?

And Coke Bust, Speedy Ortiz, and Dr*g Yacht all next to each other on the same poster?

For me, any festival that reqires research is a deep festival. Like most of us, music is just something we all naturally know about. This one has like several weeks worth of me tracking down bands and having a listen.
Wolf Eyes will destroy. One of the most intense shows you will ever see. Plus, John olson is a sexy mf'er. I could only hope Tovah tags along for a Dead Machines set.

Now I'm imagining all the possible day party scenarios.
Oh shiz... I just realized Wold is on this lineup. This is the nosiest band I have ever heard.
Apparently, they have only played 4 shows in 10 years.
Also: hopscotchmusicfest.com/news/post/2013-hopscotch-lineup-announced/ If experimental music during the last 30 years were one book, one very long chapter would belong to Masami Akita, or the Japanese harsh noise pioneer best known as Merzbow. One of the most prolific and collaborative musicians on the planet, Merzbow has seemingly exhaled his singular twists of static and sustain for the last several decades, himself becoming shorthand for the sprawling genre tag of “noise.” At this year’s Hopscotch, he will play a full set of his own. Through the weekend, he will join several other bands onstage for impromptu appearances and improvisations.
