Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Like I have said multiple times it does not really bother me but I can not believe the mods would open themselves up to the crapstorm it will create for them to deal with. People will start duplicate accounts to get an invite, or try and hack accounts because they think there is privileged info in those threads, and quite honestly I bet it will be less than week before someone name drops a private thread in the public part of the forum just to show their butthole.
Haha oh Jess. Welcome back.
Ask any pre 2008 person about the "soundboard" and how well that worked out.

After reading everyone's arguments I am tentatively in favor of the type of user generated private discussion threads proposed here. My concern was more of creating an entire forum within a forum that turns the public forum into a desolate wasteland.
Having said that one of my guiding principles in life is unity, and therefore I am suspicious of anything that separates us.
But Jess what you're comparing this to is literally what every person wanting the change is saying it won't be.
It is easy to say that, but I really do not see how this is going to be implemented without feelings getting hurt, and without shenanigans going on. That being said I don't really have a problem with it, I just think people should think through how it is really going to work in practice, not in the idealized world of I want to talk about the lineup rumors without random strangers barging in to ask if Lady Gaga is headlining or not.

We haven't even presented what we will be doing yet so anyone saying "This will happen" or "that will happen" just seems silly. Nothing is set in stone at the moment and I think some people are arguing different things. There are still plenty of people who post as if there are plans for an elite/VIP/invite-only sub forum that will foster all sorts of lineup leaks or be a place to hate on others. That's not the case.

It's just as easy to say that. We're both speculating, but I'm telling you how I will use it while you're telling me how you think everyone is going to use it.

Except I am basing my speculation on what happened last time something like this was tried. That being said you are right we are both speculating, and do you not think it is important to look at consequences both negative and positive?
Sure man but it's not fair to come in here and say this will happen and that will happen when every person in favor of this is repeatedly saying that is not what it's about at all.
The only argument I have against this is that this is a Bonnaroo forum, not a forum for either of those subjects that you mentioned above. On the other hand, I still would like to connect with people in this community to talk (yes, privately) about kids with life threatening illnesses. My daughter has Leukemia. I have been through a lot and it would make me feel better to make someone else feel better about the process. I wouldn't want that public because there can be some very personal stuff that can surface when talking about that subject.
You're right, it's not a forum for those subjects. So we should probably eliminate the Other Tent. It's got threads about baseball and the NFL and fashion and sex and food and drinking and everything else. It's not related to Bonnaroo, so away with it.
That's the argument that could be made. "You guys want these other forums, that's not what this place is about." Except that part of what people enjoy here is the sense that it has grown into something larger than just festival discussion. People on this board talk about all kinds of things together, and many members make plans to visit each other independent of Bonnaroo. So to limit the forum to what it used to be, before the community (gah) that developed here existed, is foolish and shortsighted.
When you're right, you're right.
I guess it just comes down to my (irrational?) fear that this will create a division that, while there now isn't as clearly marked.
(I started typing here about 4 times and deleted everything I wrote because it was all "selling" against private threads)
I see a lot of good that can come of it, after this discussion. Im glad I decided to post in this thread, I almost stayed out of it because of my perception of it being a thinly veiled way for a certain clique to have their own area to cast judgement on who is cool and included, and who is a troll and cast out.
It's all about understanding, and perception and I now have a better understanding.
I see that good things can come of it, and believe some will. I just hope the cost isn't too high on the other end of things.

Good intentions still have bad consequences sometimes. Maybe I am overly cynical but this board gets peoples passions inflamed from time to time and shit happens. I have not tried to imply that the people who want this would cause these problems, but that as feature open to all the info users that it is likely that someone will cause these problems. I mean it is not like only You Nod, and Juggs will be able to create private threads.

sometimes, the spirit of what something is supposed to be, and what actually happens end up being different.
(please God, Im not trying to derail this thread by bringing up a different subject, I am only using this as an EXTREME illustration of what I mean)
Take the 2nd Amendment for example. It has been so grossly abused and perverted that anti aircraft weapons are legal to buy in the united states by common citizens. That is NOT what our forefathers had in mind.
(please, please I don't want to talk about the 2nd amendment, please understand what Im trying to illustrate)

...yes?
My point would be that from you guys I can expect decent behavior and no abuse, however I can not say that about every other person on here, and that needs to be part of this discussion.
Yeah I'm bowing out of this. It's a good idea, and not nearly as serious as it's been made out to be. I would greatly enjoy the updated feature and would personally use it for innocent reasons, as I have faith many others will do as well.

I don't really feel discussing unintended consequences is that contentious, also if it is implemented this discussion will be good for coming up with a code of conduct as well so maybe we can avoid these issues before they come up.
Yeah I just feel like I've said everything I can on the topic and don't feel like repeating things over and over. I'm sure you can read through these 13 pages and get a pretty clear view of both sides, and the discussion on code of conduct should this go through isn't really up to you or me.

It is not up to us, but I am sure that you, me, and most regular posters will have some input before it is all said and done. I actually did read it all, and am just giving my opinion on it.
My last piece of input here that I want to share, from personal experience here on inforoo.
There is CLEARLY cliques, but they are not CLEARLY DEFINED. I have been met with this twice. One I shared earlier in tinychat (Yes, I know its not on inforoo, but it was comprised 100% of people FROM here). The other was in the Arcade. I had a private conversation with one other poster where I shared my distaste for what happened (incidentally it stemmed from tinychat and a clique) and dropped it. I have never gone into the Arcade since. Not once have I posted in there, although I do look in the Mafia thread once in a while. It made me feel like shiz at first. It was a clear message to me "you're not one of 'us' so phuck off". Shortly afterward I let it go, knowing full well and good that I couldn't control it, and if I don't fit in there, well, I have no business there. If someone or some group of people dislike me enough to actively exclude me from something, well, you know what?
And I moved on. But that doesn't mean that I liked it.
My fear that this private thread idea is going to turn into something that is going to cause these kinds of things to happen more often than they do now (to whomever). That's all. Im going on my experience here.
However, because of Flanzo and Juggs posts, I do realize that some really good things can come of this. The scope of this forum could grow and evolve, and that's a good thing.
