I'm not very familiar with other boards, but how would this work? Would the thread creator designate people he/she would like to invite, or is there a certain threshold of posts that automatically yields admittance?

I go back and forth, honestly. The idea of post-count would exclude some of my favorite contributors.
Plus, if we're moving to another board, it would be a lot of effort for very little return, imo.
I also have no idea if that's still happening. I just mash the ignore button, for now, before I say something I don't mean.

It's definitely worth some thought/discussion. The problem is alienating people. Who decides who is in and who is out? What criteria would be required to get an invite? Some brainstorming would need to be done. Whoever is for it can lay out idea/details in this thread.
I know you guys can set up private forums (like the mod-only one). Can we get one of these set up for lineup discussion, invite-only? It'd be nice to actually talk about the lineup with the regular contributors without the clutter of the Troo Music Lounge.
Sorry to burst your bubble but we've had this forum for a year now, you just havent been invited.

I think something as simple as having an omnibus music thread buried somewhere in the Washboard would do the job. You have to be logged in to see it and most of the problem posters only rarely venture out of the Troo.

My issue is that a private forum will further degrade the public forum, since most of the quality posters will begin to ignore the public areas in favor of just hanging with their friends in the private area. A good forum needs strong posters to keep newbies in line, whether through aggression or through kindness.
Furthermore, the most vicious arguments I see aren't between a veteran and some newb, it's between two veterans who should know better. So that type of tomfoolery would just follow into the private forum.
So I am a staunch no to the idea of a private area.

Yeah but what about people that browse using the 'new topics' option?

Name the thread something uninteresting like "US Fiscal Policy and Related Matters." It's not a perfect solution, but it seems like an easy way to try it out.

I had this thought as well. Definitely feel that it'd kill a lot of activity (and entertainment) from the main TML. Especially if it was a full sub-forum with tons of threads.
As for discussing confirmed acts in a place that wouldn't get filled with "MACCA" and other rumor talk why not just make a thread for that artist? Jeff the Brotherhood was confirmed and if there was a thread just for them it'd likely be just Jeff the Brotherhood talk without much Macca or other rumor mentioning. Yea, you'd have to put up with some "newbs" but it wouldn't be filled with some of the posts you are complaining about.

Your problem is assuming that all the veterans have something to contribute. They don't. There are dozens and dozens of people on here with high post counts who are absolute wastes of space.

So the idea here is to alienate the rest of the board. If a non private forum member happens to come up with some worthwhile information I suppose they will be invited to the hidden place. Surely one of you will be kind enough to drop by once in awhile to inform us all of what you have discovered.

Well if we are going to use a criteria besides post count to determine invites, then what criteria should we use? Basically whoever the mods like? If the forum is private but not secret there could be problems with people whining about invites.
So I think the answer is to not have a private forum. And make sure you invite me.

I am with Postjack- I greatly dislike the idea. To add to his arguments, I lurk an incredible amount in TML, but rarely post until the lineup drops. I don't care much for the speculation and the resulting arguments, so my input is minimal in TML for many months. When we know the lineup, my TML posts greatly increase as I enjoy talking about artists themselves. My lack of posting in these threads outside of February through July would probably exclude me from someone saying I'm worthy of a private thread, but would annoy/piss me off/ disappoint me if I could not see it.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

I honestly have no concern over who may be playing Roo for the first time ever this year. I have faith that the undercard will provide me with a full 4 days worth of great music and can't wait to discuss the bands that are booked. I do enjoy a confirmation now and then and would hate to think that some of my favorite posters would be off posting in private.
Something to think about that would serve this purpose is how the Coachella board has "groups." They're essential private sub-forums that can be made exclusive to invitation by the creator.
What if, rather than it be private, just have a thread with incredibly strict ban rules. One troll post and your done.
I was thinking the same thing. Like a discuss artists at Bonnaroo thread with very heavy handed moderation. It would be nice to have more pure music discussion regarding bonnaroo artists. I know we have individual threads but the fragmentation can make discussion difficult. Like id rather not track down the Frank Ocean thread if I want to talk about how amazing Pilot Jones is.
