I don't know the capabilities of proboards, but is it possible to make a thread that only certain people can post in but everyone can still read?? I rarely post but I read/lurk on a daily basis, and I'd like to still be able to read what the "regular" people post.
Just give the users abilities to make private "Groups" aka threads. It will be up to whomever created it to be "that guy" that limits users.
I know someone linked to the Coachella board but is there somewhere that it is explained better? Just so we know what kind of feature we are looking for? What are groups...how are they made....what limits are there? etc.?
Discussions are going to be had very soon....so the more info we have now the better.

I don't see what the big deal is.
If Juggs wants a thread where he can talk about the lineup without certain idiots bombarding the thread with unintelligible gibberish, he should have that right. The majority of posting will still be done in the public threads, but I think it'd be fantastic to discuss headliners without some new guy sprinting into the middle of the thread to post ZOMG KANYE KILLED JAM BANDZ or something that just derails any semblance of constructive discussion.
I vote yay, let us music elitists have our private threads to talk about whatever with people we want to talk about it with. If you're worried about us destroying the self esteem of trolls and morons, don't, we still need the exercise (and the most twisted among us enjoy it). I'd look at the private forum as an online version of going to a friends house to listen to tunes and hang out. The public forums are currently like trying to do that same activity in an overpacked bar full of sh*tfaced 12 year olds.
Let us have a living room on inforoo, we're still going to go to the inforoo bar to crack skulls. Figuratively, of course.

So should every person have the right to create private threads that they can invite people to? I know Juggs is special but I want to be clear....is he the only one that should create private threads? Should anyone be able to create private threads?
I am asking questions that come up in my head whenever I read the proposals. These aren't meant to say "We can't do it and here's why" but it's more about me asking for clarification on what would be expected/desired. Just trying to feel the whole thing out and see all the options.
I like the idea of a private thread as long as I'm included. If I'm not, then I think it's a f*cking awful idea.
Kidding. I'm not really adamently for or against it, honestly. I don't personally see the need for it (for me it's super easy just to skip by the dumb posts that pop up in, say, the headliner thread), but if it'll make the majority of others happy, it's fine by me.

I think that if you allow everybody to create private threads, you're asking for trouble. It seems like most people are just asking for a single private thread that is by-invite-only.

This should absolutely not be an "anyone can do it" thing, but it shouldn't be a "you must have posted 3,000 comments" thing, either.
I think a low number that shows a person is actually going to stick around for a while is fair. I used Juggs as the example because he proposed the idea, but if anyone over, say, 500 posts wants to start a private thread they should be allowed (or whatever the threshold would be decided at).
There should also be guidelines, though. Obviously Mods have total access, and any private thread created solely to talk disparagingly about another member or created solely to start some kind of trouble should be locked and that person should have their private thread making abilities revoked/suspended.
It doesn't have to be looked at that way though, EAP. For example, the majority of the people helping me with Tactile Tracks are Inforooers, so if there was some sort of way to all communicate together in one central location on here that would be nice.
Another would be like say a bunch of people are going to a festival (Moogfest, for example). If this was possible, it would sort of serve as a Groupme where there can be open communication about contact information or meetups or something. Just a thought.
If you want to have private forums fine but it should be based on something general and blanketed such as number of posts. If the person who makes the thread is allowed to pick and chose who can post, you are looking at a lot of left out people and IMO that is really not the spirit of inforoo.

But say it's implemented and I want to have a thread where the writers can openly discuss things in a group setting, what's wrong with being able to only choose people who are the writers?

That defeats the purpose of "private," though.
Zapp's example is the best. A bunch of inforoosters have been pitching in with his site Tactile Tracks, but Zapp has to send out messages to all of us that we can't have group interactions with. I would like to be able to do that. I think it'd a) be fun, b) help people get inspiration or whatever you want to call it, and c) would give everyone a central location to check for updates and stuff while doing our typical inforooing.

Zapp's example is a great one. Shows how this type of feature could be implemented. I also like the example of groups of people that are going to shows/festivals that aren't Roo and being able to chat with each other.
We're looking at options and going to discuss this topic and hope we can satisfy as many people as possible.

This isn't segregating inforoo.
I love Zapp, and his website, and that he pulls inforoosters in to write for it...but this is a very specific example.
I think the flip side is important to examine, as well. How it could be used for evil/meanspirited/wankery/elitist purposes. And how that may be avoided...

FWIW, each "group" or "private thread" would be modded by who started it.
You're really going to be upset because Juggs didnt invite you to his private thread?
You would never even know it existed anwyays.
And you're a woman, so you wouldnt get an invite anyways, men only brah.

so who decides who an in idiot? you? juggs? me? b/c i think we both know that i think juggs is a huge idiot. why should any of us get the say so in that?

zapp there are many places you can already do this. email for instance. i wasn't aware that inforoo was the place for people to conduct private business.

Basically, rather than beinig seen as simply "elitist" or "exclusionary," these private areas enable people to speak on certain topics with people they know and trust, without fear of the public viewing it. It's a lot easier than IM. That way, you have both - the larger, public, community aspect, and then other more private areas where the folks who know each other can have more open/personal discussions.
The vibe I'm getting is that it's sort of like facebook and it's private message system.
You can post on facebook and it's public (post on the main board and it's public) but if you want to have a private chat with 6 buddies who you are going to a show with (or say...6 friends on here you want to discuss the lineup with) then you can make a private group message where only the people you sent it to can see and respond to. If needed you can add others to the discussion.
Does that sound like what you're describing? If not, where am I missing details or wht did I get wrong?
