I've booked the Hyatt Place downtown - so has Druid.
It is around $126 a night (AAA rate) and has a shuttle that will go to central park. It only runs until 10pm though so you have to find your own way back. It's just over a mile away from the venue.
We're staying there, too. I reserved a room at the Hyatt Place a few days ago based on the tip about the shuttle from someone. We stayed near there for Shaky Knees last year at the W. One advantage of the Hyatt Place - there is a brew pub right next door (Max Lager's) for your pre- and post-show refreshment needs.
Cool! Are there any places to eat around there? We don't really drink beer, but anywhere with a full bar would be good!
E: also, where is this Sufjan show going on. I've been googeling all morning and finding nothing. If it were the same night the Avetts headlined, I'd easily skip out for him.
Think somebody mentioned the Cobb Energy Center. If that's the case it's about 10 miles north on I 75 from Midtown. Marta trains do not go there although you may find bus service that does. I believe it's on Akers Mill Road if that helps.
It is really out of the way of this fest. To make it to Sufjan, you would really need to be on top of your game, willing to drive, and willing to miss some of the fest.
I'll just leave it be then. There are a few acts that I really just don't care to see but this isn't my planned trip. It's the Mrs and she makes the schedule. I'm just along for the ride. I was just being greedy. It's been a few years since I've seen him.
1. The Mountain Goats 2. The Strokes 3. James Blake 4. Viet Cong 5. Panda Bear 6. Tame Impala 7. Spiritualized 8. American Football 9. Tennis 10. TV on the Radio
I'm concerned that there are so many people I wanna see that they'll overlap a lot.
But the good thing about American Football is that they'll play pretty much every song I wanna hear since they have like 13.
I'm going throw things if they schedule Tame Impala and Spiritualized at the same time.
Neutral Milk Hotel and American Football clashing would be my nightmare. I can deal with not seeing DFA, Interpol or Manchester Orchestra since I'll probably get the chance to see them again but NMH said that this is their last tour for the foreseeable future and American Football won't ever come back.
The area is fine. The old 4th ward is a really up and coming cool neighborhood. That being said there are still some rough areas (mainly parkway and boulevard just east of the venue) you shouldn't have any issues though. Atlanta in general has been getting a lot nicer over the years
Wait, if the area is nice how is the Red Roof Inn considered so shitty? I wasn't concerned about safety stuff until I read all of this... Should I be nervous? Because you guys are making me feel like I should be nervous.
The way you're making it sound is like every hotel within walking distance is going to be sketchy..
sorry no need to be nervous I actually live in the old fourth ward and trust me its a really cool up and coming neighborhood with good restaurants and bars. There are still pockets in the area that can be rough, you will be fine especially with the amount of ppl in the area for SK. Just be smart and dont be walking around boulevard or parkway drunk by yourself at 2am and you should have zero problems.

I have actually never gone to show at Cobb Energy because so it's so far out of the city. Part of that is I am lazy and the other part is the commute is a pain in the butt. I would love to see Sufjan, though.
Waiting on the tickets to go on sale. I ended up cancelling the reservation at the Red Roof Inn after realizing it is in the middle of Sketchville. Also, my girlfriend's younger sister is going with us so I figured it'd be better to stay in a nicer area. Booked a room at the Courtyard Marriott through Priceline for a decent enough price.
After looking over the lineup again I noticed there's already 13 more acts scheduled than there were last year. So two questions -- Do you think we'll get any additions this year (last year I think The Replacements were added about a month after the initial lineup release)? Also, are they adding a stage to deal with the extra bands or expanding the hours each day?
hehehe....I think the reactions to the location from out of towners are pretty funny. And not entirely off base. Less than a mile southwest of the venue is probably the largest cluster of homeless that I can think of in the city. They're definitely better than the dope boys, you shouldn't see them in this area. Expect to get pan handled though.
' Also, there's a grocery store a few blocks north east of the venue that has been eloquently dubbed "murder kroger".
But they're trying to fancy up Murder Kroger now! It's called Beltline Kroger
Who are we kidding? It'll always be Murder Kroger.

Hey! It's Beltline Kroger now!
jk it's always going to be Murder Kroger.
Fun Fact: a friend of a friend does PR for Kroger and says there are a couple "Murder Krogers" around the country. I guess the phrase just rolls of the tongue.

I can imagine there being 5 stages this year. And if we get another act, I hope it's Death Cab.
Oh and I got my girlfriends tickets since she didn't buy early birds. What a fucking steal $125 is.

If you want fancy cocktails Top Flr and Proof and Provision are both nearby. Trader Joe's is also right around there and it's ridiculous and fun. The Sundial is also close by and that's pretty unique. It's a revolving bar at the top of one of the tallest buildings in Atlanta.
If you want something divey The Local is a few blocks up ponce. Also worth noting that The Clermont lounge is right across the street. I don't go there often but if you want to see old strippers and drink cheap beer then it's definitely the place to be.
The park is also like five blocks from Edgewood Avenue which is one of the main nightlife strips in the city. My personal favorite is Sound Table which has phenomenal music and great drinks. Church is probably the most popular. Look it up. It's ridiculous. Other good options include Joystick, Mother, Music Room, Prohibition (it's a bar hidden behind a bookcase in a pizza place) and Noni's.
Definitely eat at the Sweet Auburn Curb Market if you get a chance (Arepa Mia!).
If you aren't in a festival mood one day everyone should take a few hours to walk the Beltline. There's some great art out there and it's a really fun vibe. Plus there's good restaurants plus Krog Market which has a great bottle shop/bar in it as well as some food. Or better yet just rent a bike from the awesome dudes at Atlanta Beltline Bicycle!
I would stay out of downtown unless there's something you specifically want to do down there. There's some good stuff here but it's hard to hop around from place to place.
I'm sure I forgot plenty of places because this was all off the top of my head. If you want to do a few of these things that aren't within walking distance of each other I'd definitely recommend using Uber. The new Atlanta street car can probably help with some stuff too but I can't vouch for it.
