Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Honestly, as far as BFE goes, the area in the top-right hand corner really isn't that bad. I helped park cars there Wednesday night / Thursday morning in 2009, and it was only maybe a 20-25 minute walk to Centeroo. I would much rather be camped there than most of the area along the bottom or left-hand side of that picture. Plus, when you know you're camped in that one corner, it really limits your chances of getting lost on the way to your tent.

=( =(
Email them and ask if they can prefest you since you're carpooling with me!
As luck would have it I received a SECOND pre-festival invitation today. It's a very slight chance but it may be possible for me to call in and ask that they give this second pre-fest invitation to Ellie instead if for some reason my account has two. Just a thought.
I never asked for prefest due to more time off and more time required (and dont wanna get burned out by the time the fest starts), but I gotta think about it... it's not that much of a difference if I leave Sat vs Mon night. I had tollbooth requested since it's only 2 12-hour shifts and done by Friday. *shrugs*
Pre fest isn't that bad. You won't feel burned out. It's really low key and there are a small group of people that do it so you get to know everyone a lot better.
When I did it, we had to be there Saturday afternoon. I remember a few of the nights when it was just the pre-fest volunteers one group cooked grilled cheese for the camp. Everyone gathered around and ate food and got to know each other.
By the time the during festival volunteers got there we already had a bond with our neighbors and it was a little odd to be sharing our home with all of these new people. I remember there were people joking about the during fest volunteers taking over our "clean" showers.
When the general population arrived and the actual festival started it felt like a whole different world. So it kind of re-energized us.

Ellie, I got the same email yesterday you quoted earlier. I also have volunteered for Toll Booth. Do you (or anyone) know where on the map West Busy Branch camping area is?
I keep reading about the west bushy branch tollbooth as the area where we'd camp. So...it looks like the area around the tollbooth on the upper left side on the map.

Anyone volunteering Pre-Fest, coming from Wilmington, NC or anywhere in the middle or western part of NC? I'm hoping to carpool to save the environment a little and save my pocket a little (share the cost of gas). PM me.
yeah, 1A on that map is where tollbooth vols camped, and it was a long hike to centeroo...luckily, one of my friends had an RV in access, so I chilled there when i wasn't in centeroo...once i left my camp, i didn't go back until i was there for the night b/c of the long walk...on a brighter note, i only had to "work" about 5 hours out of the 24 they tell you about...
for what it's worth, I carpooled last year with 3 dudes I met on this forum. Three of us all camped together by the car I had rented, but the 4th was assigned to Tollbooth. We dropped him off up at his camp (either 1A or 1B, I can't quite recall) before driving to our own camp (#3 / #4... we camped at #4, but they're really close together and both occupied by exclusively vendors and volunteers). We had planned on him coming down with us to camp through the festival, and though he only came down once to visit, he could very easily have just packed up his tent (assuming we had had the foresight to bring his gear with us) and hoofed it down to our plot on the east side of Centeroo. If this is something that any of you tollboothers are really interested in doing, there may be a relatively easy way for one of the rest of us to make sure you get in (this of course would involve exchanging phone numbers, camping close to eachother once you move in to the #3 or #4 where we are, etc).
I have a ton of stuff though I always bring camping/to festivals, so if it was just me and 2 people that packed light or me and 1 other person, that could work, but not a full car. I have an EZ Up, tent, 2 bins with supplies, cooler, stove, table, etc. (then again if I share my tent and whatnot with the people in the car, that helps) but still probably would need half the back seat down to be able to fit the table and EZ Up.
I'm kinda nervous making a finalized decision so soon without knowing if I'll manage to find a real job by then (I just babysit now which is easy to take off for) and making sure I dont spend on useless things and that my car expenses and the $500 loan payment I made dont affect my savings too much. Hopefully I'll find some extra babysitting at least to add to my spending/gas money and whatnot.
I want to come, but I'm nervous that May 1st is early to decide to definitely volunteer. I feel like taking a whole week off, especially if I get a new job, could be hard/unprofessional or something. I was half tempted to just buy my own ticket and keep entering contests and not volunteer, but I think I save more money by volunteering and would meet more people that way too and I like the perks of not wasting gas waiting in that long line of cars, etc.
I'm so wishy washy, lol... I'm conflicted. Ideally, I want to just commit and maybe see if there are pre-fest positions, the other part wants to just stick with tollbooth and pray that my ride situation will work out, but...also worried about money/time off in general. Just sent a $500 loan payment, just left my car at the mechanic to get fixed and could be another $400ish I'm guessing. I've got 2 more car payments (ends right in time for Roo to celebrate! lol), my mom wants me to start paying for my car insurance and cell phone bills, and I have a hard time avoiding shopping for little things and clothes that end up adding up. I'm doing better saving up compared to last year, but still on a part-time babysitter's budget and about to lose a bunch of $ real quick.
Regardless if I volunteer or not, I want to go for sure. At this point, I doubt I'd not volunteer. If anyone debates it, I can say I already put in my nonrefundable deposit, and it's volunteering so it's a good cause...
Aside from ignoring that this whole trip might not be the best idea financially, my main debate is whether to do pre-fest and have a ride that I know I can work out right now or stick with tollbooth and hope for the best about a ride. I definitely don't want to go if I have to drive alone, but I also can't squeeze into someone's car and pack light with all the bulky supplies/gear I've got.
So as of now, I'm still stickin with tollbooth. I figure I can make some cash babysitting the weekend right before I leave hopefully and not deal with vacation traffic as much. I met someone on Facebook who's in Richmond that's volunteering during fest so we might be able to carpool together.
My car repairs costed $811 double what I thought. No way I can afford to go as a regular patron even considering the hours I'd lose on Mon/Tues. And if leaving on Monday means some last minute cash to help with spending/gas money, then I'm all for that. I might even mass email the families I babysit for asking if anyone wants a date night or something that weekend.
As far as job prospects... I'll just have to warn them I need that week off Monday the 6th to Monday the 13th.
Edit: oh... duh! I'm definitely gonna have issues doing prefest anyway. Already have my Starscape ticket and it goes until 6am Sunday. (that means even babysitting is limited. Darn!)

I hope the carpool thing works out for you. Here's some unsolicited advice (worth probably what you're paying for it!). IF you do get a job offer, during the final interview tell them you've had a trip planned for some time now and it would be a burden for you not to make it. If pressed, you could say it's a "family" trip-cause while this is my 1st Bonnaroo, I hear it's family!
If that's a real problem for your potential employers, think about what that might mean to you down the road, when you need to take time off again. Do you really need to work for someone who is going to hassle you when you need to be off work?
I know that sounds like I'm telling you how to run your life-I'm sorry. I just know you've been planning on this 'Roo for some time now, from reading your posts. It would be a shame if you had to bail last minute.
Oh, and I've read on here about some "scholarships"-who knows, there might be enough money around to help out one more member of the family.
aw, thanks! I feel like there are others that have even less in their bank account though...and I'm hoping my bills and whatnot will help encourage me to find a better job faster.
I don't think getting time off would be an issue with an employer, but if it's during training or something, that's what could be difficult. Hopefully I'll have a job that can get someone to sub for me or that will be understanding if I tell them when finalizing employment. I said this same thing last year, probably, and still ended up sticking with babysitting though. We shall see... I think the person that might have the most issue with me being gone for a whole week might be my mom that lives with me and is bugged by the fact that I'm not applying to enough nursing schools and need a "real" job, but... I told her about Roo (she saw a Facebook status I wrote about Roo and asked me what Roo was) and I'm sure she's already forgotten about it. lol... She's the 1 I'm more likely to nag at about the fact that I've already got people counting on me and a nonrefundable deposit. I don't think employers need to know details...I think just saying I'll be out of town and people are relying on me and it's all paid for/nonrefundable should be enough, I hope.
Only time can tell... I'm still stickin with tollbooth volunteering. Leave sometime Monday and come back the following Monday.
If there are any other DC/MD/VA volunteers, please write in the DMV rideshare thread to make sure everyone gets a ride!
Quick question for veteran volunteers: What's your advice about how volunteering effects how much food you bring? More (since we'll be on the farm longer?) Less (meal tokens?) Last year (non-volunteer) I was surprised at how little food I ended up eating... and prepared even less.

BTW, glad to see other NoVa peeps here. :-)
Do you have your ride figured out? We have some people in the DMV rideshare thread that are looking for rides and/or passengers

Additional days on the farm does require bringing more food but it really comes down to the assignment you get (pre-fest vs. during). Box lunches are provided to pre-festers during their shift as well as a couple of tokens that can be used later in the week.
I always wind up bringing more food than needed but it's nice to have extra to share with neighbors. The best advice for pre-fest vols I can provide is to be prepared to run out of ice. The ice vendor probably will not open for business until Wednesday and it is not worth the hassle to get ice from Wal-Mart. I just bring non-perishable food and that makes for one less thing to worry about.

If that's the case, you might want to look into dry ice.

Well in advance of leaving home, I chuck a couple of those bigass 1 gallon Deer Park water jugs in the freezer. After about 4 days or so, they'll freeze solid and last year they stayed frozen in my cooler for damn near the whole 5 days (my cooler was in my tent). I also froze about 12 normal water bottles and those went in too, and the whole thing, once packed, was filled in with loose ice cubes. That thing stayed really cool for most of roo. As I mentioned before, there's a shuttle for volunteers which will take you straight out to Walmart-- not sure if this is operating for prefest, but it was up and running all throughout the festival last year. This was a great way to replenish ice and food alike (it's a Super Walmart for those that don't know, and so it has a full grocery store in it too). While I do certainly agree that it's better to bring too much food than too little, most of what I ate last year was Nature's Valley granola bars (which-- if you'll excuse the possible TMI-- also served as a handy way to cutdown on the number of "number two" trips to the oft-hideous portopotties) and then a couple of Subway subs from Wally, and of course the meal tokens that were dispersed to Volunteers. I didn't bring any cooking gear last year and likely won't this year either-- just not worth the space and hassle imo.
