Thanks for the detailed response! On the pros side-I definitely like the idea of sitting in a shady tent for my shifts-I'm "older" and standing in the sun/heat being a trash talker last year came close to making me rethink volunteering.
On the con side-being a trash talker last year I got to my shifts a little early and asked to be posted by the stage I wanted see/hear. and I didn't know about the monday possiblilty, that could be a problem...
My biggest concern was the camping, I was concerned about camping with only 1 or 2 others at the pod and being out of the volunteer camping area. I like seeing a bunch of different people and mingling.
That being said I edited my application the other day and filled out their pod application so I guess I wait to hear if I'm accepted...
any idea of what the odds are?
No problem, you should hear back soon. I assume Matt still runs it?
I got an amazing schedule when I did the PODs, of course my friend had the opposite luck with her scheudle...
and camping... you will be with everyone in GA.. they will fill the area behind you once they open the gates like normal... i was just saying the tents RIGHT BEHIND the art work, like the front row or whatever... is where you would camp as a POD volunteer...
hope this isnt too confusing... im a little out of it this morning...
one big plus i forgot to mention is the electricity... plue ur phone in for your shift and ur good to go, no need to charge in car, or wait in line at fuse barn...
What are the prefest duties like? I've been wondering about this quite a bit...
Most of the duties entailed helping prep any and everything before Centeroo opened on Thursday. All three of my shifts consisted of assisting the company hired to decorate the backstage areas where the artists hang out. Moved lots of items to the various stages and painted/created stuff that was used to spruce up the trailers inside. Others helped with building fences and such. Prior to working pre-fest for the 1st time last year I had heard it was more physically demanding than during fest. That was definitely the case for me.

In an unmanageable / regrettable way? Did the physical demands of pre-fest diminish from your enjoyment of the main event, so to speak?

No. The physical work was not that strenuous. I didn't mean to make it sound hard but it was more than standing at a recycling station as a trash talker or handing out samples at a booth.

I was thinking of volunteering this year but I really would only want to do pre-fest. Can you choose between pre, during, and post fest? I just dont want to miss any bands because there are too many acts I simply cant miss this year and I am going to Phish after bonnaroo

You do get to request a duty (pre-during-post) but for the most part the pre-fest work is filled by returning volunteers. It's worth it though to do during fest. Last year I just bit the bullet and did during-fest just so that I would be a shoe-in to get pre-fest this year (which I did). May as well set yourself up for next year!
Patience? It's killing me not knowing if I got Toll Booth. But, I sit here and wait and wonder....and wait...and wait......
I'm starting to get excited about my 1st Bonnaroo. It seems I spend an inordinate amount of time on this board. I am ordering stuff for my campsite left and right. I hope it gets here soon or I'll be broke from buying stuff!

Attached is the route I'm taking to Bonnaroo this year. I am a PRE-FEST volunteer, so I will be leaving late Saturday, to arrive on Sunday by noon. If you need a lift, send me a message and I will be more than happy to pick you up on my way. All I ask is that you chip in on the gas. Thanks!
All Volunteers are required to check in and get their credentials on Tuesday, June 7th.
*Pre-Festival Volunteers: Sunday, June 5th **Toll Booth Volunteers: Tuesday, June 7th between 10 AM - 4 PM During Show Volunteers: Tuesday, June 7th between 10 AM - 8 PM ***Post-Festival Volunteers: Wednesday, June 8th between 10 AM - 12 PM *Pre-Festival Volunteers have already been notified that they were chosen to work Pre-Fest. **Those of you working the Tollbooths will be next week. ***Post-Festival Volunteers can check in on Tuesday if they would like to arrive for the BBQ
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So if I'm reading this right (and no, it's not my omission of words, but WET's), Toll Booth people will be notified next week and everyone including Toll Booth will get schedules on check-in Tuesday.
YAY! I'm even excited about the Tues night BBQ and the chances to win 4 tickets to '12 Roo or $250 cash (I'm too far to care for the other shows they have tickets for). Definitely showing my steel bottle/real water bottle to try to win.
For some reason, I thought toll booth check-in was until 2pm (or maybe they changed it since then) but this means I might have time to sleep in a bit more Tuesday morning in McMinnville.

I checked an old email and it DID say 10-2 for toll booth. That was the same email that said toll booth camping would be close to Centeroo!

haha. riiiight. ok, good to know I didnt read it wrong. I still have it but didn't look it up. this gives me more time to sleep, take 1 last real shower, shop at Walmart and grab lunch before headin in
So, my friend who is *not* a volunteer and I are going down together. She's planning on staying in a hotel Tuesday night because I have to be there that night, and then meeting up on Wednesday. I have some questions:
1. Would she be able to drop me off Tuesday afternoon? How close to the campgrounds can she get if she's not a volunteer? I don't want to have to walk for ages. 2. Would it be fine for me to camp *without* a tent just for that one night? Since I wont' have a car till she comes the next day, I don't want to have to haul all this stuff.

If either of those are issues, you could hitch a ride from 1 of us and maybe share a tent too with a volunteer in the same caming area (POD and toll booth have their own areas)
Do you think it would be easier for me to drive in with the car on Tuesday, then have her take a shuttle from the hotel and meet up with me on Wednesday, or for me to try to get a ride from someone on Tuesday? If we did it the first way, she wouldn't have to wait in line for hours on Wednesday.
I think the trick with that is that you dont know when youre scheduled until you get there. Non-volunteers arent really supposed to be in the volunteer campgrounds, so if you want a regular car camping spot, then she'd take it in and start getting camp ready by the car and you could move there as soon as you're able to. If you guys want to just move to Tent Only and camp there together, you can drive in for volunteer check-in, but you cant guarantee you'd be free Wed night, I think. Once you're parked, I dont think youre allowed to move until the fest is over and you're heading home.
I'm assuming you requested during fest hours? I don't know when the earliest shifts would start... Would also have to work out the logistics of how she gets from the hotel to Roo if she doesn't drive in but I'm sure there are some people with some room to squeeze her in and drop her off and have her stay in line with them if necessary.
If someone else has something else/different to say, please chime in. This is coming from what I read, not necessarily from experience (1st time volunteering)

Ellie is right, jamillinzi. you'd have better chance of moving to her than vice versa. I've volunteered several times and our campground is always restricted albeit inconsistently. You don't want her to get turned away. If you could catch a ride in with someone at check in (shouldn't be difficult at all) and camp one night with the volunteers and then move to your friend's site. You may have a long or short walk depending upon she ends up. As far as sleeping tentless, your welcome to borrow a backpacker tent from me for the night. I always carry an extra tent, pad and bag just in case something goes wrong. Anyway, I'm working prefest and will get there Sunday. If this interests you, reply and we'll exchange cell numbers.

where are you coming from? I'm prefest too and trying to carpool
It's starting to dawn on me that 12 hour shifts could be tough, especially if I want to see a show or 2 after. Anyone know the typical toll booth shift hours? Did they say 12 hour shifts last year too and usually you didnt work all 12?

And on that same note, WET website says volunteers have "access to showers". Do volunteers have separate showers, and if so, I wonder where they are?
I'm guessing it's just like the rest of them but in the volunteer area so only volunteers use them...then again, not sure if toll booth has restrictions or if we share with the neighboring GA campers

I'm wondering the same thing. Do TB volunteers just check tickets, or also check cars and stuff like that?

I thought maybe a special security team checked the cars but I dont know for sure. I think we scan wristbands, hand out info guides, and probably guide people where to park. I've tried to Google pictures but not much help
wed. night i was scheduled 10 pm-7am. we were supposed to be helping park cars all night as they were coming in, but they closed the gates b/c of the thunderstorms. we still had to sit around, but i actually slept some while we were waiting. at about 5 am, we got shuttled off (again) to our location and started helping park cars until our shift was over. thurs night, i was scheduled 8 pm-midnight. when i checked in, we were informed they didnt have anything for us to do, but we still had to wait around. after about 2 hours, they said we could leave and we could volunteer to work the next day (friday). of course, no one wanted to work on a day when they were promised to be done, so everyone just left and our shifts were done.
tollbooth camping (if its in the same place) is a LONG walk into centeroo. i dont think there is anywhere on the farm where the walk could be longer...
