Given the over-saturation of festivals nowadays and attendance the past few years, I have a hard time seeing it truly selling out
Im pretty sure 2011 sold out in May and this lineup is way better, as well as commercially accessable. And the saturation of festivals with this kind of lineup will draw more than it will spread IMO. IOW last year when the lineup, esp headliners, were quite polarizing, the oversaturation caused ticket sales to be soft. This year, this lineup is not polarizing at all. Pretty much the top 5 lines are mostly made up of universally loved, or highly commercially successful artists.
When comparing to Coachella (I know, I know) they sell out lightning fast, and most of it is indie or great artist that only music fanatics know about - and pulling them all together is what brings the masses of music lovers. If Bonnaroo put a lineup together like Coachella, sales would be dismal IMO. They would lose the casual fan to a fest closer to their home. Like Firefly or Governor's Ball, etc.
THIS year, however, has people coming out of the woodworks to get to Bonnaroo. People who have *thought* about it in the past, and maybe even committed only to back out because they "ran out of money" (misappropriated is more like it) or couldn't make the dates work when it got closer (deprioritized is more like it). This won't happen this year because even the most casual of music fans knows that this lineup is stunning. Truly gaudy in its blatent gluttony for great acts.
AC could have stopped at Macca and thrown down a bunch of slop with a few good ones in there and they could have sold a ton of tickets. However, on top of Macca you have Mumford and Petty. Widely recognized and loved artists. I don't have to go through the whole lineup, but other than the hardcore rockers (who won't come unless there is a headliner and several hard rock acts) and the serious jam fans (who bought tickets last year just to see phish and Umphrey's) there truly is a lot for everyone.
I stick to my prediction of selling out on or before April 25th. I will take up to 6 beer bets on this.
It only sold out in May 2011 because they were way overhyping the "Bonnaroo #10" and people fell for it. Although that was the year Eminem who is way more of a "mass appeal" act than any of the acts on this year's lineup. I'll honestly be shocked if it sells out at all before they "sell it out" right before the weekend of the fest.
I mean, I hear what you're saying, and that may have sold a few more tickets, but people went because of the artists, not because of the hype. Although I am certain a few "fell for it" the VAST majority of people sweating out 4 days of grueling heat, dust and tent camping were not there because of the hype. Eminem sold a ton of tickets. So will Macca. Oh, and those Mumford dudes.

Tickets will sell out at around the same time they always do. If everyone takes a trip back to last year, several people were convinced that tickets would see out faster than usual because Radiohead was going to bring all the hipsters, RHCP would bring all the casual music fans and Phish would bring all the hippies. We all saw how that turned out, didn't it?

I was one of those people - and that's why I'm keeping quiet this year.

Oh yeah, Phyllis was totally ready to bet me that they would sell out by March 20th (I think) last year, but I didn't take him up on it because I talked myself into it not being a sure thing because that logic totally made sense.

It made perfect sense to me, too. I know Mumford is giant right now, but I don't see how they're going to attract any more people than last year's headliners. And I love Paul and Tom Petty, but I was born in 71. I don't know how many teens and twenty somethings share my fervor for their music.

Yea me and my horrible bets, ugh. This year it cost me $100 lol.
Macca >>>> Radiohead (ticket sales wise) Mumford will sell more tickets than RHCP
Petty will sell about the same as Phish, because of who he's paired with.
I'd say all 3 of these are pretty debatable.
Ok lets debate it.
Macca has a MUCH wider audience base than Radiohead. MUCH. And Radiohead is huge. We're talking about the sole surviving non Ringo member of the biggest rock and roll band in the history of the world, and he still rocks the fuck out of the stage.
RHCP wasn't selling out everywhere last summer. In the last 6 months Mumford has sold out 12 us dates in lightning fast time.
Petty sells. Phish has a solid wide fan base and this one is debatable, sure, but even if I'm wrong, it's not by a landslide (like, say, Macca).
And in conclusion, I'll eat my words if I'm wrong and pay my beers out. I'll eat money speculating on tickets.
We can debate, or we can make a beer bet. Up to you.

For what its worth it seems like music festivals are selling out really quick this year. Of course Coachella always sells out, but Sasquatch (which I usually travel from Wisconsin to attend) sold out in 90 mins. (Compared to the usual month or so) This lineup has pulled me and my friends away from Sasquatch and legal weed, and will be bringing us to the farm for the first time. We will also be purchasing VIP, mainly for the bathrooms and showers.

fwiw, I think VIP this year is going to be a whole different beast. GA is going to hang out for a while, but VIP will probably see a sharp uptick in sales due to the nature of the headliners.
Speculating tickets is a pretty scummy thing to do.
That's an interesting opinion. Why do you think that?
You say that like it's a minority opinion. You are buying extra tickets that you have no intention of ever using so that you can resell them at a higher price and make a profit. If you don't see how that's scummy, we are not going to ever see eye to eye on this. You are no better than the people who snatch up high demand tickets and instantly put them on StubHub at absurd prices. Instead of letting the event sell out naturally, when all of the available tickets have been bought by people who actually want to attend the event, you are speeding up the sell out so that you can make a buck. The secondary market on concert tickets inflates prices, and that extra money isn't going to the artists or the venue or anyone involved in putting the concert on.
I think we can all agree that there are going to be more people attending this year than last. Question about tomorrows sale, last yr was my first Roo, and I got tickets no problem, but it sounds like tomorrow is going to be a different story. I'm trying to get 2 tickets tomorrow, one for the gf as an anniversary gift, so I need to be able to get my hands on some haha. How quickly do we expect tomorrows tickets to sell out, and does anyone have a price estimate?

Right on. I know of a few families going. Parents for Macca. Kids for Mumford. And there's no way most of those old heads going for the first time because of Macca are gonna go GA, they have the desire, and the cash, for VIP.

Tier 2: $234.50 Tier 3: $254.50 Tier 4: $269.50
Ticket fees are $26.30 per ticket, which includes a $6.00 facility fee, $3.00 contribution to Coffee County, $1.00 charity donation, and service fees.

Eh....listen man. I love the beatles. Everybody loves the beatles. But the rest of america doesn't have nearly as much love for macca as the specific niche of this board does, not in 2013.
I'm 22. All of my friends are pretty young too. Under 28. And everybody that I talk to about getting a group together for 'Roo this year has a pretty "meh" response about Macca being the main headliner. They could take it or leave it. And saying that Macca is more appealing than radiohead is a bit off. My friends are by no means part of the "LoL skrillex and mac miller are the reason im going to roo this year" crowd. They have respectable tastes in music.
That statement is probably true for people above 30, but for below thirty I don't think that applies anymore. I think people below thirty would pretty decisively choose a radiohead show over a paul mcartney show. That's not a knock on paul, but more of a praise of radiohead and how they are basically "that" band of this generation. And not only that, but the "radiohead experience" goes into play as well. At a Radiohead show your censors are being overwhelmed by great music and intense visuals. Macca, not so much.
I'm in no way trying to downplay who macca is or his stature. I'm just saying that roo has TONS of young people in attendance nowadays, and from my experience those young people could care less about "FINALLY!!" being able to see a beatle.
That's an interesting opinion. Why do you think that?

The secondary market is going to happen with or without me, and I'm not going to buy 100 of them. Just 2 extras.
I've been buying and selling tickets for different events since middle school. I would buy and sell Red Sox tickets to be able to go for free. Got me into Fenway about 35-40 times before I got burned and had to start over. Eventually I started selling unlicensed score cards outside the park to earn the money to get in and got to a couple hundred games that way.
I'm not rich, man. Bonnaroo is a stiff expense for me. Offsetting some of the cost by being opportunistic seems like the opposite of scummy to me. It isn't easy feeding a concert addiction and 3 kids too lol
I agree that the companies that buy hundreds of tickets for the sole purpose of making money off people like me, they suck. But I'm not driving up the price of tickets. The law of supply and demand does that on its own.
I appreciate the idea of what you're saying, but I do disagree.

I think the two big reasons why Roo takes the longest to sell out is capacity and accommodations. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesnt the farm have a capacity cap of like 90,000? Im pretty sure thats the biggest in the US. Sasquash is like 25k and Coachella is 60k. Also, with Roo pretty much youre only option is camping/RVing. Sure there are hotels, but they are far and limited. No matter how great the headliners are, it would be shocking to find 90k people who decide right away that they are willing to camp in the heat for 4 days.

I'm pretty sure bonnaroo has topped 100,000 before
