For the past 2 Roos, and Voodoo, and Midtown, and various other fests, I've used this: My Favorite Concert Blankie and it has been WONDEROUS. A bit of a tip for Roo though - it gets filthy throughout the weekend. So as you go, gotta get used to giving it a good shake after each sit session, and then back at camp. It's a bit water resistant too, so if the grass in the WHAT field is damp, it keeps your butt dry. It's SO GREAT. I highly recommend. AND if you get the ones at BB&B, you can use a mailer coup and get it for $15. And they come in other colors/designs too.
Thanks for the rec! This one is pretty. How small does it fold up? Like, would it fit in a backpack (camelbak daystar) or do you just carry it?
It folds up to about 16"x12" and has a strap, so I carry it cross-body. If you got it, and put it through the wash just to work out the stiffness of it being "new", then you may be able to zip it up, then fold it over halfsies and get it into a larger camelbak. My bro carries a larger backpack around at Roo, and sometimes we'd task him with stuffing it away. Another positive note - it has definitely doubled as a blanket at night times; at Voodoo '11, it was FREEZING the first night, and me and my friends sat on the edge, then pulled it up over our backs. Then at Roo '11 I was meeting my sis and bro after a LN show, and I was chilllllly (it was after 3am) and so i literally laid on the edge and rolled up in it like a burrito under the Merch sign while I waited for them.
I can't really say enough great things about this blankie.

Boom! UPS delivered a monstrous Amazon box today...
EDIT: yes... that's a pocket chair
I invested in that Coleman tent fan last year and it's pretty worthless. The light is a neat addition to have, but seriously the fan barely moved air right in front of it never mind through out the entire tent. ... And are you planning to share your tent with anyone? That's massive.
The tent fan was actually a gift. I bought the rest. I'm not sure who was asking about the solar panels but they work great with my iPhone. I used them yesterday and had no issues. The only thing is when you lose sunlight completely you have to unplug and re-connect the charger. And as for your question about my tent...meow
First time poster here, but this is going to be my third roo... This is kind of the opposite of new additions, but I go more minimalist each time... I just don't want to bother with all that... my first year I had a tent and an easy up, grill, tables, etc... second year, didn't bother with the grill or tables, just used the cooler as a table. this year I'm going in a group of three- none of us are bringing tents. We're going to basically hang 3 hammocks from 2 well anchored sawhorses, set under a large canopy. Tested and works great. For sleeping and privacy, we're hanging tapestries. Just keep everything else in the car. The way I see it, why bother trying to sleep in a tent that's hot enough to cook you at 8 in the morning. Anybody else ever used or seen a similar setup?
Pics? Very interested in saw horse and hammock setup. It seems the saw horse wouldn't suspend my hammock far enough above the ground.
I have been researching a lot for portable hammocks and by and large this looks like the best that merges portability with traditional style hammock. Amazon
My camelbak came in the mail a couple weeks ago that I got for around $30 from Sunny Sports. My 4yo loves it.
Also I caved and bought 2 pocket chairs (2 for $12.99 + free shipping @ amazon). I figured besides Roo, they'd be good to take to baseball games...
And a couple of these filtered water bottles, also handy for baseball games AND the roo.
Oh! and I grabbed a couple of bags of bungee cords the other day at the dollar tree. I was looking for clamps but didnt find any. I also found a bunch of shower curtain rings that I thought I'd thrown away, in a drawer I was cleaning. Will use them to hang tapestries/sheets/cheap shower curtains to my ez-up. Found a few dresses at a consignment sale so I think I'm good on that front too. I think the only gear I really have left to buy is an ez-up (which I plan to get at Academy) and a few tarps for groundcover.

Hey this looks great! Seriously considering adding a hammock to my equipment pile... anyone actually own one of these?

Sorry i'm just getting these up, I had to make some adjustments.... Here are a couple pics of what I'm doing... As you see in the pic, I'm still using a tree for one side of my hammock- at roo, this will be my second sawhorse setup and my suv roof rack. We're planning 2 hammocks btwn car and one sawhorse, and 2 more hammocks btwn both sawhorses. The drawing that looks like it came from a 2nd grader was me. As for how the sawhorses stay up, I am using guidelines from an old tent to keep them up, and the 4x4 post simply sits between them. The sawhorses themselves break down for travel, only held together with carriage bolts (just have to bring one wrench to set up). Very stable, especially with some weight. We are just going to throw up a couple ez-ups for shade and shelter, and wrap tarps and tapestries for sun shade walls/sleeping privacy walls. As for keeping off the ground, as long as you can tie your hammock at least 2 feet off the ground, you should be able to stretch it far enough to avoid sleeping on the ground in your hammock. The material for both sawhorse setups does take up more space than a tent, but it can just be tied to the roof rack. The best part- when not sleeping, throw a piece of plywood over the top, and you have a nice table.
So I found some portable grills at a dollar general store near my work, pretty cheap that could fit in the car and use charcoal. However, I found next to those a "flame disk"? Basically a cleaner replacement for charcoal..has anyone ever used one of these?
Bit the bullet and bought a portable hammock. Can't WAIT til it gets here...
Did you get the one i linked?
I did, thank you for the tip!! I really liked the size of it and the reviews are great. Hoping it comes tomorrow so I can take it out in the yard and enjoy some of the 55 degree weather we're supposed to be getting (before it snows again next week....SIGH).

Awesome! Well let us know what you think. I haven't ordered mine yet but its gunna happen.
I bought a Coleman battery charger last year from amazon and was very popular at camp. It runs on D batteries and charged phones and ipods throughout the weekend.
Was looking into phone chargers, and now I'm intrigued by this Coleman Energy Pack...may just end up ordering it! Thanks for mentioning it

this looks cool. I was thinking of getting a solar charger to bring but this might be better for use other than just roo. hmmmm. has anyone tried the solar chargers??
I also got a new intex air mattress from Aldi's for $39. it comes with a built in air pump but it has to be plugged in. soooooo, will have to get a pump for it that takes batteries or hand pump. couldn't pass up the deal though

Money is tighter this year than last, but I have already bought the following backpack because I had a hell of a time getting my heavy gear in a rolling suitcase through the mud bog back to the airport shuttle.
I got the: TETON Sports Escape 4300 Ultralight Internal Frame Backpack, which should fit just about everything. Yay!
And, I think I will try to upgrade my Coleman Sundome 2 person tent to the 3 person version this year. I was a bit cramped with my air mattress last year. Is it even worth the upgrade?
Also, that Coleman battery charger looks mighty tempting.
I also need a portable chair. Any ideas on a very light, compact one that would fit in my pack?
What about recommendations for a makeshift sun shelter? I have a Kelty one, but it's more of a two person set up sort of situation, unless someone offers to help me out. :-) I may be able to fit that into my backpack. Here's hoping. :-)

Jimmy, What kind of sleeping pad did you buy? I tried a Thermarest, but I was not overly impressed. It felt just like I was still sleeping on the ground. Not sure why, as the model I had got great reviews.

I'm super excites about my additions this year! I am pretty sure I am not the only one, but I find myself shopping for bonnaroo/camping supplies all year so I can find the best deals.
Sometime over the winter while I was in target I noticed one lone twin size air mattress on clearance for $7 so I got that.
Then by fate a week or two later while in a thrift store I found a brand new Coleman air pump that uses a car charger for like, $3
THEN about a month later I found a brand new oversized sleeping cot for $15 at goodwill! I looked it up and the thing retails for about $65
Needless to say, I can't sleep on both so I am going to let my buddy use one...or I'm going to sprawl over both just to assert my dominance...I'm kidding, I won't do that...maybe
Also! Not so much a deal, or camping supplies but while I was in SAMs club I found a box of mikes hard lemonade Slushee things. They come in packets that you freeze, they already have the alcohol in them. I got a box to try them out. They're great! Not what I normally drink but can you imagine how amazing a nice frozen drink will be at roo?!?!? (Well, one that you aren't paying $10 for) And they stay nice and frozen even in super heat so I'm certain they will last at least a day or two!
Every year I feel like our camp gets more and more luxurious haha I almost feel like we are cheating the system.

This was delivered to my door today, a Guide Gear Portable Hammock. Haven't slept in it yet, but I LOVE it. It swings like a proper hammock, making it a little tricky to get in and out of at first, but not impossible. It does not cradle your body like some because it is strung pretty tight, but I expect it to loosen up a little bit with some use. It is comfy though. The breathable mesh will be great for some serious summer heat, and the length is more than enough for someone around 6', like me. At 6'5" you might not be comfortable, but for anyone under that I wouldn't expect a problem. The base is nice - super easy to set up, seems sturdy, and folds up to fit in a bag barely bigger than a camp chair. You wouldn't lug this thing around if you were backpacking, but the weight is no issue for car camping, no matter how strong or weak you might be.
The price of it was what convinced me to give it a shot (and the unused gift card balance burning a hole in my account) - $39.99 via Amazon, while others I've seen start at $70 and go up from there. I'd never heard of the brand, but the construction and materials seem solid. If you like hammocks, need something to sleep on at Bonnaroo or for other festivals/camping, and are on a modest budget, give it a try. If I had cash to blow I would have bought a brand I had heard of, but this Guide Gear will certainly keep me from dying of heat stroke or hating my life due to sleep deprivation this summer. Gonna stick it on my front porch to try it out on Monday cause the weather is supposed to be warm and I have the day off. I'm hoping to catch a nice warm breeze and lots of extra Z's.
Edit: not me in the pic, I don't wear culottes, or thong sandals. And my legs are way hairier.

I wish I could bring a cot because they sound super comfy, but as it is I bought too small of a pack to bring everything I'd like. I guess I'll look for a small air mattress. Thanks. :-)
