Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Part of the problem is that bonnaroo insists on scheduling thursdays with blocks of 15-30 minutes where there is NO music happening. This draws everyone to the stage the next biggest hyped act is playing. Phantogram was just as packed. I was hanging from the support beams for the sides of the tent, for fesr of being crushed against them.
I think the easiest thing to do to cut down on the crowding is open up the What stage field. Don't have any bands play, just let people into that part of the grounds.
I think they close that section off after the headliners for a reason. They don't wanna hire all that extra security just to keep an eye on an empty stage. If I was drunk enough, and saw the What Stage unattended, i'd probably think it was a good idea to get up there and do something stupid. People would show up the next day to find the green B in Bonnaroo missing or something.
I agree that if they continue to make Thursdays as awesome as they have the past few years, they need to have at least one Which Stage act to help with the crowds. But they didn't have either stage going friday LN last year, so maybe they don't give a quack about crowds
Thursday is looking nuts already! Death Grips (probably my most anticipated act), Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Japandroids, Father John Misty, & Killer Mike already confirmed. Last years sucked for me so I'm psyched. Thursday looks better than Saturday for me right now.
Saturday is always the worst day. at least since 2011 when i started attending.
word to the wise, mhardcore, ariel pink is notoriously hit or miss live. i only tell you this so you know that if he goes off the rails trainwreck style you aren't surprised. he does put on good shows when he's not being himself. if it comes to a conflict i would definitely skip in favor of a band with a better live track record.

Thursday was bad for you last year? Even with Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Phantogram, Alabama Shakes, Big Gigantic, Kendrick Lamar, and Moon Taxi?

I don't really know the ins and outs of opening the Which stage, but the way I see it is: it takes a certain amount of manpower to open and close that stage, regardless of how many bands play on it. Opening the Which stage for one show seems terribly inefficient to me. So if they open the Which stage, use all the manpower and energy to open it - they should have at least 3 shows on it. This would do wonders for freeing up space in the tents Thurs night.
Alt-J is my most anticipated Thursday act, but I hope to see Twenty|One|Pilots and Sea Wolf and Allen Stone and.....

someone brought up the fact that they keep the outdoor stages sient on thursday in order to keep the neighbors happy. considering that the which stage speakers are weak as fuck, this shouldn't be an issue.
+ bjork isn't going to pull a crowd like BS or Mumford so it won't need to be too loud.
Im definitely in favor of Bjork Thursday night. That'd be amazing on so many levels. The fact that we would now have a Thursday headliner going forward. The fact that they are opening Which Thursdays. The fact that Bjork will pull the crowds away from the shows that I actually want to see, instead of the rest of the farm going dark while she is on stage. There isn't much that will get me to see Bjork. Actually, if she "headlines" Thursday and is unopposed I still won't go. Ill go drink.

I don't think they would put Bjork on Thursday because then a bunch of the people who don't get in until Thursday night/Friday morning who really want to see her would complain. But Roo has shown they are open to changing things up the past few years so maybe we'll see something like this occur.

I've got a gut feeling we see the change come next year or the following year.

the schedule will be out before people leave for the farm. if they don't get there in time, how is it any different from them missing alabama shakes or phantogram?
i bet alt-j has more adds on bonnaroo.com than bjork does.

Some people can't get in until Friday, regardless of the schedule. Taking time off work and travel can sometimes cause people to miss Thursday night. In 2007 my friend and I could only get off for a short time and had to drive down Thursday to make it in for Friday morning. We missed the acts on Thursday that year and I know I'd be pretty upset if a higher billed band that I wanted to see was booked on Thursday.

right, but you're going to miss acts either way in that situation. just because an act is billed above another does not make them more popular with the audience.
it's a fact that centeroo is too crowded on thursdays. has been since they advertised opened the campground up on wednesday. seems to me they need to do something to alleviate that overcrowding.

You're right but I'd much prefer to miss a lesser known band than a higher-level act that I really want to see on the farm. Others may be different but I'd be annoyed if one of the top 15 acts who were a draw for me were booked on Thursday which has historically been just a warm-up to the full festival. I'd have to deal with it if it happened but I still think it's one reason for why they don't book high level acts on Thursday nights.

I agree that Centeroo gets pretty crowded and I'd like to see them do something to help with that. Opening the Which stage up may help that or it may draw more people in (because it seems like a bigger deal or because a bigger act is playing) which then adds to the problem. In 2008 I was with like 20-50 other people during the opening act in a tent. Last year some of the first act's tent were tough to get a spot for. Not sure exactly how they fix this issue but I'd like to see something attempted.

i got pretty close for wavves in '11 (act that popped my roo cherry) but we went in on the side of the tent and snaked in along the rail between vip and GA (guys from workaholics were there watching).
also, somehow, i made it to the front of the drums crowd. my friends were posted up at the back.
last year was a clusterfuck of epid proportions but i didn't care about many acts last year so it wasn't a big deal.
i have to remember to not eat a headfull of mushrooms on wednesday night this year. really fucked up the timing of my weekend.
Was it 11 or 12 that they started opening the gates on Wednesday? sorry I forget.
At any rate, it seems to me like doing that caused the increase in people for the Thursday shows. Its, like, a direct relationship. So basically they fixed one problem (waiting in lines for 4-5 hours to get in) and created another problem (Thursday clusterphuck). Cause and effect. Personally, I prefer a busier Thursday to wating in a car line for 5 hours.
I feel like this Thursday the problem will be worse than it was last year, but of course I am just speculating.
Unless, of course, they decide to be proactive. Wouldn't that be nice?
although i'm curious as to why you'd think this thursday would be any busier than the previous two?
it's not like any acts we have confirmed for thursday '13 are any bigger than the thursday acts of the past two years.
Again, just a speculation, but I think more people than ever are going to make it a point to be there before Thursday sundown in anticipation of Sir Paul
2010 was AMAZING!! But it was my first Roo so everything was amazing. Even the 12 hour line to get in. Neon Indian could have been my favorite show that whole weekend. The XX was solid. Frank Turner was on point. IDK if any of you remember he broke a string on his guitar and had to sing a couple songs a capella while it was being restrung. He sang a great old english song I cant remember the name of. Lotus also was fantastic.
This year could be pretty amazing too. I have a feeling Alt-J will steal the show.
Also, best back-to-back-to-back in one tent for me EVER! Plus Django Django kicks things off in That before the excitement in This. Django Django - Japandroids - Alt-J - Vaccines
