This was more directed to the first page in regards to people bitching back and forth about. Was pretty drunk last night and re reading, I definitely realize "But now created, needs to change course and be left to those who are excited for them." Is way out of order. I probably should have worded it to say "left to those who want to discuss the music itself."
BUT, I personally don't see a need or reason to start a thread simply to say they suck.
I totally agree. If you're going to start a thread, It's in bad taste to do so just for the purpose of bashing someone. But I've got more important things to get worked up about haha.
This may not be the case but your comment made it sound like you've only heard the song "Thrift Shop". Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are not "lil Wayne". I don't like "lil Wayne" at all (but again that's my opinion). Listen to some of Macklemore's music that doesn't come on the radio, he's quite talented and sends some very strong, positive, and powerful messages. And Ryan Lewis mixes some creative beats in the background.
I can see how you could see it that way, but it's far from the truth. I've listened to his popular songs, recommended songs, and a his entire newest album. I just don't like his style and I think he has far too many "filler" lines and songs. He's got talent, but I think he's trying to hard to chase success. I agree, he does send a positive message, and for that, I respect him. Not many people have the guts to do that who are also chasing success. It just comes off to strong in his songs. Ryan Lewis makes a killer beat though. I have to give him that.
This is honestly just a difference in opinion then.
But I will say that I think you are wrongly labeling these guys as "chasers of success". If you have listened to his music like you say then surely you have heard "Jimmy Iovine" and "Make the Money". I think he's gotten success in the right way and if you have ever been to one of his shows you will know he loves to have fun and interact with the crowd. He is by no means out there for glory or at least that's how I perceive it. In fact the fact that it is "Macklemore and Ryan Lewis" instead of simply "Macklemore" speaks volumes to the kind of person that Ben Haggerty is.

Those two songs are what helped me continue giving him chances. You very well may be right...
I understand there is hype, but I sat through his whole set at Snowball and it was not...good.
Band or DJ as his backing act?
It was a DJ, and it was cold, around 9 or 10 degrees when he came on so I can understand that can affect a performer. My biggest gripe was probably the lyrical content of most of the songs, or in the case of attempting to get the crowd hyped up - the lack therof (the words p*ssy, h*e, and b*tch can only be used creatively so many times).
I wanted to like him because I heard such good things about his album, I won't give up on him if I can see him with a live band (see Nas for an example of a rapper who I think is excellent live and sounds great with a live band).
If Macklemore didn't have the longest running #1 hip-hop song in history, and was just some nobody selling 50,000 copies like sh*t "backpack" rappers such as Lyrics Born, 90% of the people disliking him would be on his jock.

What is a "backpack" rapper?
Backpack rappers started out as a term for rappers that made songs that talked about their lives as ordinary people doing ordinary things (no hos, money, fame, clothes)...more relatable. The Peter Parkers of the rap world...now it's becoming so cliche to be a backpack rapper that it's gaining a negative connotation.

Thank you, excellent explanation.
Edit. I feel like rappers like Mac Miller fit this mold better than 'sh*t'ty Lyrics Born.

I think it goes with the negative connotation that she is talking about. It started out as what she said and has morphed into meaning more "Pitchfork Approved Rap"

But I like bitches, hos, clothes, and money. and this macklemore fellow and I do not have a lot in common.

I didn't really know much about M&RL until the line-up was released. At first I was really didn't take interest until I heard "Thrift Shop".After digging into their music I appreciated that they are a throw back of how hip-hop used to be, which was fun. There are also some serious topics touched on "The Heist", but for the most part it is a positive message that they are promoting. The fact that they are have had this much success without being on a major label backing them up makes me appreciate them even more.

That is one of the largest respect points. Whether you hate em or love em, they did independently what artists have been trying to do for years back by labels. #1 album #1single, all independent. They did it their way & they did it right.
My feelings about M&RL have evolved with time. I first heard (and loved) "Same Love" via a friend's posting on facebook a few months ago. Then "Thrift Shop" blew up, and I had no idea they were done by the same artist. I hated Thrift Shop. The whole clarinet thing is annoying to me. HOWEVER, now that I know they are the same, and after doing a little bit of research into them since being named to the Roo lineup, I'm kind of enjoying these guys. Their set on NPR (link below) really hit a note with me. They start all serious and end with tons of energy. AND, I find their message(s) pretty rad.
They were absolutely HORRIBLE in Atlanta last weekend. Like seriously hard to watch, and even harder to listen to. Cheesiest shit I've seen in a while.
