I think at this point it's a done deal. Festivals loose headliners all the time. The Stones last year was a perfect example of that. Bar something going down to them saying they won't perform together, this is going to happen.

It's official- I'm going. Weekend 2. No ticket yet, obviously, but I'm publicly stating my intention... on the internet!
A good friend of mine just finished up his Psych PhD program here at UT and is spending a year at UCLA (apparently in Psych you do a year of basically post-doc after your dissertation but before you officially get your PhD- he described it as being like residency for Med students), so I've been considering it. I went for Weekend 1 in 2012 and had a blast. I'll have the money this year, so it all comes down to the lineup. Last year's was good, but not good enough to justify $300 for a plane ticket and $300 for a fest ticket. But Outkast + Arcade Fire? Count me in. And I haven't kept up on here bc I've been busy the past few months so I hadn't heard this until now, but if NIN plays too? Fuck yes!

Woooo! I saw in your other post that you're a bit hesitant about going Weekend 2. For as much as I sing the praises of Weekend 1, I am sure you'll have an amazing time! Plus you can geek out and watch the online coverage of Weekend 1, if you so desire.
It's still so foreign to me to think about people going 2 different weekends. I'll get all excited just to find out they are going to the same fest, just a different 3 days.
And AWESOME, NMB!!

Yes, it's like an alternate universe for the same festival. Don't think I'll ever get used to it. And I have no idea how some people have the stamina/funds/time to do both weekends.
If I lived closer, I would. Talk about conflict busting. You could have two separate festivals, if you wanted.
I live about 1.5 hours from the polo grounds (maybe 2?). I intended to do this last year. Too much real life got in the way and I had to limit myself to just one.
CKS mentioned I prefer weekend 2.... I do.
For these reasons: 1. Smaller crowds. 2. Improved logistics (all mistakes are made weekend 1 and staff gets the hang of it by weekend 2) 3. Improved sound quality (see reasoning for #2) 4. Easier to get tickets 5. You get to watch the webstream to help bust conflicts 6. You get an extra week to think about the schedule and bust your conflicts 7. LESS COACHELLA HIPSTER ELITISTS!
Ok so here's my theory on why Weekend 2 has less festival elitists. As much as LA rocks and the people here are awesome... Coachella draws the such "omg I'm here just to be here." crowd. People will buy weekend 1 because in their mind for some reason they think Weekend 2 is just sloppy seconds. People actually had signs and banners that said "F!ck weekend 2!!!". LOL. Laughable.
I've done Weekend One one year, and done Weekend Two the other. While I wish I could goto both, Weekend 2 will remain my sh!t.
The grass is also in terrible shape by Weekend two according to people I know who have attended both weekends and yeah that hipster complaint is beyond moronic.

If those headliners are even 2/3 correct, this might be the year to head west.
I mean, what we've got now is about the best evidence you'll get outside of the actual poster being released.
- Arcade Fire's dates make them a lock. There are also people on the Coachella board who have cited to instances where AF members have been asked and have replied in the affirmative that they'll be there. - NIN has been rumored to be a lock since last year, and their tour dates conveniently end in South America just a few days before Coachella. - I'm sure you're familiar with the Outkast shenanigans from the past few days.
At this point, I think the real question is do NIN have a co-headliner? Or just a stacked second line with someone big going against them on the Outdoor at the same time? I only ask because they're touring a ton, and have headlined much smaller fests recently. They're definitely a notch below Arcade Fire and Outkast.
I was thinking about a coheadliner for NIN too, I just don't see someone who could fill the slot. I'd assume it'd be Neutral Milk Hotel or QOTSA, or maybe someone that's not known yet like The Strokes or something. (Wishful thinking)

I don't think they'd need to get NIN a co-headliner, but if they did, I wouldn't be surprised to see Coachella pull an up-and-comer, similar to Phoenix last year, and make them a headliner. I don't really have any particular artist in mind (Vampire Weekend? Fun.?) but the way Coachella tries to get out in front of the pack and dictate the market has always been interesting to me.

Arcade Fire and Outkast on the same bill is already a colossal lineup though. Those two and NIN as a third headliner would still sell like hotcakes. Tickets will go fast.
But it's not as if Weekend 1 has all these massive issues which need to be fixed - Weekend 1 isn't a dress rehearsal or some sh*t.
Not saying it's like a dress rehearsal, but when you have probably thousands of event staff people with little training and supervision... things go a lot smoother the second time around. Inbound and outbound logistics, security, etc.
while people may claim that they get to watch the webcast and use that to bust conflicts, that's terrible reasoning.
The webcast was very effective for me busting conflicts, because most all of my conflicts were between bands that I had seen before and new bands I wanted to check out. I can't speak for everyone else, but what I did was watch the webcasts of the bands I had seen before. It left a pleasant feeling where I was comfortable checking out new stuff, while I feel that I hadn't missed out because I watched the broadcast.
I'd rather be the first one to see Outkast's show and be stunned and surprised, rather than hear about how awesome it was and what songs they played and whatnot. I'd rather catch the guest appearances and whatnot firsthand, rather than know that so-and-so came out with Band X and then expecting to see the same thing.
This is a good point, but the reverse ended up being true for me last year. I thought the R. Kelley guest spot last year in Phoenix was gimmicky. Not hating on R. Kelley, but there was just something stupid about it that didn't work. I was much happier with the weekend 2 performance. I felt like I got a more pure show where the band relied on showcasing their own talents and abilities rather than relying on a guest or surprise to hype it up.
I think you are right though, and I hate to bring it up, but the damn tupac hologram... somethings are better as a complete surprise.
And that crap about hipster elitists is just that. I can say without a doubt that there was zero difference in the crowd at Coachella Weekend 1 as there was with any other fest I've been to. You get your typical d*ckhead behavior that pops up everywhere, that's about it. And the Sahara tent keeps the most obnoxious 30K or so corralled way off in the corner, so the rest of the fest is remarkably wide-open and pleasant.
I'm sorry... I don't find this person's attitude conducive to a festival environment. I would prefer if people like this would stay home... but it's my experience that weekend 2 has less of them.

NIN played 3 hours in Cleveland last month, and headlined VooDoo, Trent could definitely pull it off. Think I talked the GF into heading to Indio.

It's not about how long he plays, it's if he can draw the crowd.

I'd argue that my girls taste in music tends to align with the generic taste of the majority, ie: she's musically challenged. My biggest fear for taking her to NIN was that she'd be bored, or worse, hate it three songs into the show. To my surprise, she absolutely loved it. Danced the entire night (lone exception Head like a Hole). I've never been to Coach, and not sure if people just start jumping the shuttles early or head back to camp. Do their crowds tend to bail if they don't dig the HL?
(playing catch up here, sadly ignorant of the logistics of Indio, but I bought refundable flights, 85% sure I'm going this year)
