Last year I didn't go balls-to-the-wall, and while I was happy that I was able to keep my energy levels up throughout the fest, I actually felt like I could've gotten more out of the fest if I was less worried about pacing myself. I LOVE to dance, pretty much all the time, but that's pretty exhausting when you're doing it for four days in the Tennessee heat. This year, though, I wanna go HARD. I'd like to be up for both of the AnCo and BiyH early-morning sets, but I'm afraid I'll be too whupped to enjoy the earlier sets (especially because Thursday is my most stacked day of the festival, so come Friday I'm going to be tired regardless).
So for those of you who rage throughout the fest, how do you do it? Nap whenever possible? Avoid the earlier sets? Loads of Clif Bars? Caffeine and other fun things? I don't mind being exhausted come Monday, but I do have an 11-hour drive lol. I know I'm not going to be able to see every show I want to see, and I'm okay with that, but I want to be able to last throughout the night! Last year I was trudging my way back to camp when I heard Umph McGee's cover of "Breathe" floating over the farm, and I was bummed that I missed it. I don't mind being tired on Sunday though; there's only a few bands I really need to see.

You can put me in the "caffeine and other things" group. But seriously it's hard to stay well rested. Even if you had a house to go back to 4 days of music will make you tired. Hate to say it but its just something you gotta tough out. Maybe dance less (shitty option I know)?
Also the less corn and booze you use early on the easier it will be to stay awake. Though that's a lame answer.
Lame as it is, I think it's the only answer! I very much limit my intoxicant consumption until the sun sets and despite inevitably starting off every day slightly hungover I can still soldier through the entire weekend with no more than 4 hours sleep in a 24 hour period. My only advice outside of that would be remember to eat! I think you burn off allot of calories wandering around the farm and dancing at shows that need to be replaced. Personally I could be starving and not notice it if I've had a couple of beers.

If possible I avoid the what/which daytime shows. I also look through the schedule and decide which shows I can chill in the back of the tent for. Some bands are perfect for laying out a tapestry and zoning out for an hour or two.
LOL, that was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the thread title! I thank god I live in Atlanta just a couple hours away. The thought of having to drive 11 hours Monday morning would probably bring me to tears! That's what I don't get. How the fuck do you folks find the energy to do THAT!

no kidding! guess I can't complain about my 5 hr drive back to SC...
It's tough this year we are bringing multiple tarps and even some Mylar rescue blankets to make good shade at home base. Also we aren't going to try and run around all day to every show. I think it's key also to head back to camp around 5-6pm for an hour of rest before heading back for the prime time shows. We went with people who didn't stop the first two years and we were headbang dosing off in centeroo by 11pm. All of this is assuming camp isn't too far out for centeroo. If we need to ride a taxi or two to save us a couple hours of late night shows then we will do it this year as well. I don't know why but $5 seemed way too much for a taxi ride in years past.
This year I am going to try really hard to be well rested before I step foot on the farm. Last year I was like a kid before Christmas, running around getting things ready & too excited to sleep. I remember being exhausted Thursday evening, which sucked.

I have never been well rested while I camped at Roo.... I have no idea how people sleep there.... I have learned that I need to do day parking and sleep in AC, in a bed, to be well rested, so that is what I do, and it's the way I can enjoy Roo in a much better way

This. One of the main bonuses of coming in Wednesday night is that you can set up camp and relax before everything gets going. Coming in Thursday usually means getting up early, hours of travel, setting up camp in the hot sun then resting in the middle of the day for a small period of time (if any) before shows start.

that's one of the only disappointing things about VIP. I would love to set up Wed night and just chill on Thurs!

Sherrie?
(you probably won't get that. some of the older posters like Mike D will love it though.)

You've not camped far away enough then. I was all too happy to pay $5 to skip a 15-25 minute walk in the sun. Plus every cabby and group of people I rode with were cool as all hell.

That is THE best argument I've ever heard for coming on Wed. I feel validated now, thanks!

You can still end up running around though. I made the mistake of staying up all night Wednesday night after we set up camp and didn't sleep until we got back to camp Thursday night. I will not do that again this year, gotta save more energy.
As one of the old farts I recommend ear plugs, staying cool as possible and have to concur with the concept of caffeine and other stuff to stay up. It's the only way I make it through the late night shows. If you do that though remember to bring tea or something else to help you sleep. We have a 10 hr drive home (11 with the time zone change). We either leave late Sunday, get a couple of hours out and sleep somewhere or wait until Monday morning and rough it.

I'd have to pay for a motel room a few hours out from the farm on Monday. I really don't know how y'all do it. You guys are troopers and you have my admiration!
Edit: I'm retarded. Thanks to google maps and not my education I see that yes in fact you can travel 11 hours from Bonnaroo while your watch only says its been 10.

How do you stay well rested while driving? I mean more how do you stay awake during the lon drive. Coming from the NYC area we have about a 14.5 hour drive not including stops and there is only two of us. During long drives (especially through Virgnia) I sometimes can get really drowsy and have to stop only after a couple hours. The past bonnaroos I would only have to drive 3 hours each way. What do you got for me?

What Dave Maynar said. The years I've arrived on Wednesday and had my stuff setup that night I've gotten a decent rest fer Thursday and the rest of the weekend. I don't enjoy travelin' through the night into the mornin', and then settin' everythin' up, then just goin' straight into festival mode.
The best advice I can think of is to stay out of the sun as much as possible during the heat of the day. Even if it still sweltering in the shade, it doesn't seem to drain you as much as having the sun right on you. Earplugs, a battery fan in the tent and a mylar space blanket clipped onto your tent between you and the rising sun can usually buy you a little more sleep.

So glad I found this we should get VIP together and tell Bonnaroo what they need to do and get us in Wednesday. They never fucking let us in early! Total bullshit we pay more to have VIP and they treat us like crap and make us wait an extra day it's totally not fair. VIP should be the first one in cause we paid more for this and should be able to have the extra day and night.

What time are you leaving Friday night?
Probably after I've seen ZZ Top and Wu Tang. Why do you ask?

The worst is when you're waiting for a show to start, and it's a show that you've been anticipating for a long time... and then BAM. Your legs start to go weak and you get that tired/heady dizziness like you need to rest.
This happened to me right before Bad Brains last year. I immediately panicked thinking "not nowww!!! Bad Brains-->Floggy Molly!?!? Whyyy"
Fortunately, I had the sense to hit the vendors and I found my miracle combination for this very situation: Strawberry Banana Smoothie, and an nice tall ice-cold ICED TEA. I was immediately re-energized and I danced and moshed like a champion through both shows.
Long story short... don't underestimate the power of a healthy pick-me-up.

I never made it past 2AM (that I knew of). I don't know how I'm going to stay awake for Animal Collective, especially considering how drone-y their music is.

consider some tapestries or bed sheets over tarps, they're great if its raining but if not they don't ventilate well.
caffeine, its to hot for coffee and most other energy drinks you should not be drinking in that kind of heat. i do much better with some fruit/veggie juice, coconut water and a salty snack.
