I have to be 100% packed and ready to go before I get to bed tonight... I can't decide if I, in my precious few hours left, should go get a pair of Keens or Tevas or something.. or just roll with my usual. I do not relish the idea of wearing my rainboots down there (although I bring them every year). I get soooooo sweaty in them, and a lot of you know my barefoot/flip flop tendencies. I can't handle being closed in.
i've brought my tevas for the past two years and haven't really worn them. for some reason, they give me blisters when i wear them out there all day. it's a bummer, because that's what they're for!
Yeah, I am one of those who are fanatical about their shoes. I LIVVVEEE in my yoga mat flips, but they are not good in the rain! The past few years I have gone barefoot in the Sunday night rains and been fine (flips in the portos), but I probably don't want to do that all weekend. I am leaning to saying screw it and just hope for the best. It does scare me to get shoes that aren't flips.. I think they'll blister me too...

I wore my chacos for the first time at roo and didn't get blisters. I think it's because of the straps being adjustable/customizable. They're super spendy, though.
Yeah, I've neverrrr in my four years had any sort of flying insect issues at Roo, just spiders and ants as someone else said. No mosquitos but these flies are RIDICULOUS. everyone is having issues with them. I'm camped in the back 60, so maybe it is just out here but it's just so bad. I've got like 3 sitting on me right now and I've used the crap out of spray. Make fly killing plans peoples!
Thanks so much for the heads up, as this is certainly unusual. But I have to ask, are we talking about big flies, as in house/horse/black flies, or something smaller, like midges/gnats/fruit flies? I can deal with the little ones or a few big ones, but not a ton of the big guys. Large populations of big flies make me feel like I'm not in America anymore (although that might be appropriate since Roo is kind of a different place).
I've found that Tevas are really hard to break in. I think it takes some trial and error to adjust the multiple straps just right unfortunately that error almost always results in blisters. They are really comfortable once you get them right but I wouldn't recommend trying them out at roo.

I am bringing an arsenal of shoes: OluKai flops, Sanuks, Vibram FiveFingers, Danner Gore-Tex boots, and New Balance running shoes. And lots of non-cotton socks. I'm fanatical about having lots of shoe options and rotating them frequently. So far it's worked for me and I never get blisters.

I don't recall ever having issues with bugs at bonnaroo...even after severe downpours...
I'm thinking it may have something to do with the small # of people who are on the farm now, vs. the 80k+ that will be there by the time the rest of us get there.
Hoping that's it, anyway!
If they are attracted to humans, then yes, maybe they are just concentrating themselves around the few that are there and we'll notice them less when we're all there. Seems logical, and I'm hoping it is the case, though I admit I am no etymologist.

And if they're not attracted to humans, hopefully we just squish or scare them away when we come trampling in on Wed/Thurs

I do as well. Rotate them thru the day or day by day. I have 2 pairs chacos, keens, ASICS runners and then my muck boots. Hope I don't have to wear the boots.

It could be bone dry for weeks and the ditch between What and Which will still be a swamp. On Friday I'm going to be going back and forth between the two all day and I might wear my boots just so I don't have to watch my step through there.

I've heard from the steel crew that there is indeed a bridge between what and which cross over now. And to who asked me about the type of fly, they are just annoying ass black house flies. I'm praying they go away the more people who show up I feel like I'm in the book of revelations and the plague has been sent forth.

Apparently there's a bridge over the ditch now.
But they said they fixed the ditch last year, and maybe the year before???
I hope so! They did an AMA (ask me anything)on Reddit last week and many people expressed concerns for the walk way there being so muddy. They said they were going to take care of it. Saw someone from steel crew yesterday and they said they made a bridge. What *kind* of bridge is yet to be determined. Oh and I forgot to answer who asked me what the back 60 was, it's the camping area for volunteers and some general admission behind and to the left of centeroo. We get a secret entrance and everything.

This is what I do. I bring multiple pairs of COMFORTABLE shows, and I adjust accordingly if my feet start getting sore or if I feel a blister coming on. And with the potential for rain this year, I'm bringing my Tevas and some water proof running shoes.
Kopedan I know the route from the volunteer vendor area the main walk from pod 1 everyone uses has a bridge. But the road by the southernmost fence floods and had water constantly last year. This is the service road. Vendors had to walk it.

They harvested the horns of unicorns to build it. That's what took so long.
Update: the sun is out and it's drying out a bit. They appeared to be spreading sand over a couple of the particularly muddy spots. There's more rain in the forcast, though. And yes, there is now a bridge over the ditch!

Heavy duty tent stakes to help protect against the wind. And make sure it's set up properly with all the arms strong and straight. If the awning isn't taught over the frame, that is when it's more likely pool water and collapse in.

Strong tent stakes definitely help. Also couldn't hurt to tie the legs to something heavy like a gallon water jug or a cooler.
when you leave camp for the day/night, lower the legs so the awning is only a couple feet off the ground. this will help keep it from getting caught by the wind (though as other have said, it should be staked down) this also keeps the wind from blowing as much rain under the awning onto all your stuff. this works especially well if you don't have the Ez-up walls.
make sure the stuff under the EZup wont create puddles from any water that is running under the awning on the ground.
and make sure you don't have any sags that will collect water above you.

I forget - do the stakes get angled pointing towards the inside of the ez-up / tent, or do they angle toward the outside?

I think it should be inside, but want to confirm
you want the stakes angled opposite the direction of rotation. so you want them angled toward the outside of the tent. if the wind is blowing to the left, then the tent will want to fly away/roll away toward the left. angle the stakes on the windward side toward the right. this means the leeward side will have left facing stakes, but it doesn't matter because the windward side is the important side.
