It was -9 when I went to work this morning. To make things more interesting, I was in a job function that required going in and out of trailers on the docks much of the day.
I avoided the west facing side of the building until late morning, when it gone above zero outside and maybe into the 30s inside.
I have had to do that inside-outside switch repeatedly during work days before. Whether it's cold or hot, it's always awful.
I always feel a small sense of defiance when I listen to punk music at work since I work for a major US defense contractor. I hate working in this industry - I really need to move. Everything around here is DoD contracts. I don't like being a part of the war machine, but after college my student loans didn't really give me a choice. I get really bent out of shape with guilt sometimes.

Bad news: Home because of the snow. Good news: When I called to let my boss now, she told me I could do my OSHA refresher a week early, so I don't have to take more vacation time. Woop!

This basically ALL sounds like good news.
It would be except that a) I may still have to claim some vacation hours today because of my schedule being four tens and b) I had to postpone two appointments today which I will probably do next week which is already packed.

Could you work extra time next week, since it will be busy?

Nope. It doesn't work like that with my office. They're weird.
On Monday, we had a department meeting around 2 pm - where anyone that wanted to go home right then and there, could punch out and go.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, more than half of my department went home early due to all the work being done early
Thursday: I got sent to another department due to lack of work within my own. A few hours later, there was another department meeting - where they were offering voluntary overtime this weekend to anyone that wanted it.
I gave someone $2 million dollars to buy alfalfa land because he let me take his cows as collateral.
That violates one of my primary rules: never take collateral you have to feed.
Fuck.
You squeeze the right part of the cow and milk comes out, right? I can sell that milk, if worse comes to worse. If your cows are eating my crops, i want a hook in their milk.
There is a new sig in there for someone if you look hard enough.
So, for my birthday back in October, I found out I was on the list of people to be laid off (we were under a huge audit). A few weeks pass, legislation is passed for our jobs and we temporarily got to keep our jobs. New governor is appointed, our director is fired and a personal friend of the governor is now appointed new director of my agency and he had 30 days to come in and make changes to get our agency under control. Apparently financially, we are really bad off. Like 16 million in debt or something like that. We made the front page of the local newspaper several times since all of this started.
So, fast forward to yesterday. The new director waits until 4:31 (we close at 4:30) to send out a meeting invite to everyone, and additional meeting invites for different sections throughout the day for Friday. Most people didn't see the email until this morning, however, my boss called me last night about it. Since it has been the 30 days, a few high ups and some low people on the totem pole have already been let go last week, and with all the meeting invites, no one is sure what to think.
Basically... Today could be the day the people being laid off could be let go (me), or I could be moved into a new position, or possibly no change at all but since I have a meeting invite, the latter is highly unlikely. Keep your fingers crossed (or pray if you're into that) for me, please!
If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck lately. I need all the good thoughts I can get. Please and thanks!

Update -- our new supervisor came to us and told us that we would be reporting to a different division now. He's hoping to get a new position filled for us since we are down 2 people and it's just me and my boss pulling the weight right now. He told us a few of the other departmental changes but he said the rest we would find out at the big meeting at 1. My job is safe for now. The changes that affect me are good ones. MAYBE MY LUCK IS CHANGING!!!
One of the meetings just let out. Apparently it didn't go so well. The chick that sits next to me who is about my age apparently is angry. She is just standing around giving everyone the middle finger. I kind of want to laugh, but I kind of want to call her husband and let him know I think she's having a mental breakdown and doing something to get fired and he might want to come pick her up and talk her out of the behavior. I've honestly never seen anything like this before.
my last day is next thursday. therefore all of the fucks I give at work are pretty much out the window. it's a good thing I like the couple of coworkers I partner with, otherwise I would just say fuck it and go home.

you got another job lined up?? or are you winging it??

uhm, kinda winging it. I'm on contract at my current place, and my contract ends next week and they don't have the capacity to extend it.
I still have my serving job and get paid through march from my full-time job. but I'm applying to grad school for the fall, so I very possibly will be moving in august, so I can't decide if I want another full time job or if I just want another serving job for the time being.

well, damn girl! Good luck. It sounds like you'll be just fine though!!

Yikes. If you have some sort of relationship with her husband, you should definitely call him. If not, I would discreetly call HR.

I'm not too worried! I'm kind of leaning toward another serving job because fuck adult responsibilities. plus more money and less hours to work. it all just stems back to the fact that I have no idea yet if grad school will for sure work out or not, so that's the only shitty part.
a friend and I are applying here this weekend... a restaurant that has its own fucking ferris wheel!!

Thanks!! Someone else called her husband after we all kind of walked away and discussed it. The other people in the meeting said she went off on folks and got a little heated but she didn't lose her job. Not sure WHAT happened. She just left and took the rest of the day off after speaking to her husband. It just got really crazy, really fast. Kinda scary too....

I am officially doing nothing but sitting in my cubicle waiting for 5PM EST so that I can go home, imbibe certain beverages, and inhale the fumes of a certain plant with my girlfriend.

We have a publication that is SUPPOSED to be going to print on Wednesday, but only half the advertisers have given me contracts and even less have submitted artwork. Plus, we have a new ad system that is stupid and doesn't work properly. I am completely jealous of your sitting around waiting for 5PM, while I am entering contracts, uploading artwork and stressing that we aren't going to go to print on time.
When I get home I am inhaling the fumes of a certain plant, going to a show, and if I am lucky, getting lucky after said show. I have high ambitions.

my last day at my full time job is thursday. I cannot fucking wait. I'm so fucking bored out of my mind. there's no point to me even being here. there is *so much* I would rather be doing than sitting here.

So the lady friend hit her 500th unique beer on Untappd when we went out last night. I put a picture on the facebook to celebrate (with her permission of course). Today, her director comes into her office, walks directly to her, shakes her hand and gives her "congratulations on the amazing accomplishment". That's a workplace environment I can get behind.
OMG, work is crazy. We are supposed to be going to print on Wednesday on one pub and are SO far behind, but its impossible to not go on time. And we are working on the magazine too. Plus, I never finished the newsletter and I am officially 2 days late on it, its not looking good for it getting finished. They are asking for my circulation shit that I have't had time to do, due to these stupid publications. I am DROWNING!!!!
