Aoife O'Donovan. She's one of the few artists I didn't know on the lineup; NPR did an interview w/her today. She's written for Alison Krauss and has a similar soft, lilting voice. Her normal gig is w/her hubby's band, Crooked Still.
also: Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir (OM&M) Glen Hansard Lord Huron Jim James
Wow, thanks for that. I have been slowly going through the lineup and checking out the artists I'm unfamiliar with but hadn't listened to her yet. And probably never would have. I dig it.
(1) Damon Albarn (2) Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds (3) King Khan & His Shrines (4) Ty Segall (5) Ms Lauryn Hill (6) Darkside (7) Kanye (8) Janelle Monae (9) Goat (10) Meshuggah.
I'm surprised there's been so many Bjork nominations, I don't think I've ever listened to her music and been impressed by the vocals, she always sounds flat to me.
Definitely Glen Hansard, Milo Greene, Bernhoft ( I thought this guy was black until I saw him, that automatically means he's a good singer), Jim and the Lumineers lead singer/girl cello player sound great together.
As awesome as this cover is... personally i enjoy the Dirty Projector's girls sing this. I'm kind of shocked they're not mentioned in this thread more actually.
I'll agree with the R. Kelly/Bjork love in here though
edit: I mispoke they're mentioned in her plenty... need to learn to read every post before posting.

I labored over this decision. Here's my final answer.
1. Paul McCartney 2. Chris Stapleton 3. Bjork 4. Andrew Duhon 5. Warren Haynes
Honorable mentions: Tom Petty, Del McCoury, Allen Stone, JD McPherson, Solange, Fatoumata Diawara, Megan James (Purity Ring), Jason Isbell, Jeff Tweedy, Billy Gibbons, Glen Hansard, Clint Maedgen (Prez Hall Jazz Band), Dwight Yoakam, Billy Idol, Aoife O'Donovan, Jim James, David Byrne.
Macca is much more of a songwriter than a vocalist... even in his younger days.
Oh, please. If you trace Paul from "Til There Was You" to "I'll Follow the Sun" to "Mother Nature's Son" to "Helter Skelter" to "Maybe I'm Amazed" to "My Love" to "Cut Me Some Slack," Paul is obviously one of the all-time great singers in popular music history. It's easy to overlook what he does vocally, because he makes it look so easy (or that he so rarely over-sings) or to underappreciate his vocals in favor of his songwriting, as you've done here. But in terms of sheer technical singing--range, control, versatility, power, subtlety, taste, timing, tone--Paul is tops. If you're the singer on dozens of the best-sounding songs in the history of recorded music...then you're one of the greatest singers of all time.

He is an excellent singer, and really shines in certain areas (timing, tone, subtlety), but I think that the singers fiddler named are more technical. It very well may have to do with how rarely he over-sings, but I just think there are more technically advanced singers on the farm this year. Saying paul is more of a songwriter doesn't really say much if you think about it, seeing as he's more of a songwriter than just about anything.

if he never oversings wouldn't that make him technically better?

In my view, it does. Paul's "greatness" is about as close to objectivity as any evaluation of art can possibly get. But his control and poise as a singer is a major part of his vocal skill as a vocalist and is no small part of the success of the Beatles and beyond. In terms of intonation, I'd stack Paul against anyone else on the farm any day. It's one thing to compose all those block harmonies with the Beatles and Wings; it's another to be able to execute them so flawlessly at any moment. Let's hear Solange or Warren Haynes or any of these others do that, and Paul can do it in his sleep. He doesn't go nuts with showboating melisma or overblown vibrato, but that's a cheap way to define excellent vocals. His range is also underappreciated. He's one of those male singers who sings deceptively high--it doesn't sound like he's well up into a high tenor's head-voice, but he's way up there (in his seventies, no less).

Speaking of Dirty Projectors/Bjork, right out of the classics column is Stereogum's tribute to Post, with contributions by DP, Bell, Liars, Atlas Sounds, etc..

...and this is what turns Beatles agnostics into Beatles "haters."
Beatles agnostics aren't "haters"; they're just tone-deaf contrarians. The "greatness" to which I'm referring has much to do with the Beatles' influence overall, and Paul's influence on pop singing, specifically. Beatles agnostics are experts in denial, but to deny that particular point is just obstinate pretense.

Well that settles it. If any one needs me Friday night I'll be drinking at camp with .
