Do young kids that came to see Mumford and Sons even know who Jack Johnson is?
of course they do. they were all the target audience for his Curious George soundtrack years ago. now they are 18 and prolly love the dude. he will prolly bring some guests out and make the best of a bad situation.
its funny i saw JJ open for Ben Harper in 01 or 02 (cant remember) for maybe 2000 people. i saw him several times at Roo after that and the last time being 08 in front of most of the Bonnaroo crowd on What stage. its crazy how big he got. i always liked the chill vibe he had and was great to sit back relax while high. i never expected that he would ever get big enough to hold down a headlining spot at Roo. He is so far past his prime now but im sure is still a chil time. god im getting old. haha
edit: if i were at Roo this year i would be very happy with this because id rather hear JJ play the curious george soundtrack than sit through mumford playing that one song over and over and over and over.....

Yeah, because Jack Johnson has a very diverse sound himself...
at least he is chill. mumford is for sloppy drunk frat kids that want to get wild for no reason. if you cant appreciate chill acoustic music to lay back and rest then well sucks for you i guess? doesnt bother to me anyway. im sitting at my house in Florida. im going to the beach on sunday and couldn't give 2 sh its if anyone on the internet cares about what music i do or dont like

Oh, well you're surely in the Bonnaroo spirit, aren't ya?
Mumford is not "frat bro" music, they're not Dave Matthews.
man i went to Roo from 04-09, and last year. hope everyone enjoys it, as it always a great time but ive been there and done that. so im supposed to be in the Bonnaroo Spirit (whatever that means) even though im not there? makes no sense. the only reason im staying up with whats going on is to update old friends of mine from home who are there this weekend. i dont like M n S and im not alone in that.
edit: also M&S IS frat bro music, the difference is that DMB actually has talented musicians in the band.
I didn't actually watch him, but after seeing Michael Winslow, we walked back to camp to down a beer and fill my bag up with beers. They were not checking bags at VIP entrance 75% of the time and when they did, we just pocket'd them. This was the worst shiiit that I've ever heard in my life. Goes down in the books as the weakest headlining set that I've ever heard. Only heard 4 or 5 songs, but I am comfortable making that statement. Worse than Blink 182 at Voodoo 2011. Worse than Kings of Leon at Hangout this year. I mean, that's cool that he stepped up to the plate on such short notice, but I really hope this dude is not going to be headlining festivals for the rest of his musical career. I would have rather had f'n Hootie. At least that would have been funny instead of just...sad. Good thing Sir Paul and Tom Hetty kept them shiits real.
I know this will be a long post, but I would appreciate if you hear me out. I grew up in a soft rock house with my parents playing Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson. When I was a young kid my parents bought “In Between Dreams” and forced me to listen to it the entire drive to the beach. I did not want to listen it at first, but as we drove down the road I slowly began to love that record. I listened to that album and his previous two so many times that they began to make me want to seek out more great music. As I grew up, I would go through many phases of music exploration like I am sure everyone does in his or her lives. I grew to love classic rock, hip-hop, folk, country, electronic and indie music, but I always consider Jack Johnson to be my starting point. Since “In Between Dreams,” Jack has disappointed me with albums that really only produce 1 or 2 good songs. I saw Jack in 2007 in Atlanta and I enjoyed the show, but thought I wouldn’t go see him in concert until he released at least a few more albums of material. The point I want to make is that even though Jack is hated on by many people on this website (I was destroyed in the comments for suggesting back in December that he could be a headliner), but I feel like you have to respect this man and acknowledge it was a great concert. The setlist was incredible with a great mix of his early songs and the best songs from his newest albums. The Mumford and Son tribute was also touching and the Bonnaroo song was fun. I probably won’t see Jack in concert for a long time, but just because with the material he has now, I can’t see him putting together a better setlist. As a young guy in my 20s, I grew up with Jack Johnson just like many people grew up with the Beatles and Tom Petty. I respect this man and am thankful he stepped in to help the festival we all love so much.

Id like to say I absolutely love Jack Johnson i have ever since i was like 12 and received Brushfire Fairytales for my birthday. I was comparable to a screaming 18 year old girl screaming for Marcus Mumford when i found out Jack was replacing Mumford!

Given that it was probably one of the hardest shows in his life (nobody wanted him, he had 2 days to prep and 4 hours to practice with a band he hadn't played with for over a year), I think he did pretty well! The bonnaroo song was hilarious, the Mumford tribute was perfect.
I think he was just there to play music and have fun and make people smile and if that's not what bonnaroo's supposed to be about then hell, I just don't know
(though my pandora station just put on mumford and I had to skip it or fall into the painful sadness I lived in on saturday again, so there's still that to get over...)

I think saying nobody wanting him is a stretch. At least going off of the conversations I overheard, people ranged from being okay with him playing to being pretty excited. I'm not a fan of his at all, I grew up in Hawaii and he was/is obviously overplayed there to point where I hated him and his music, but I enjoyed his set. It was nothing mind blowing, but the vibes were good and it was a relaxing way to get ready for LN while still hearing some alright tunes.

I would really like to know how the fourth artist on the bill doesnt move up to that slow being that her show was only two hours earlier. She is accomplished enough, she has enough material, and her set was packed so she would have brought it and her amazing evening set would have been magnified to probably 2nd best behind Macca for people that arent even big fans of hers. I am really curious why this didnt happen. JJ could have had her slot and it would have been a good progression of music, me thinks. I got the message from Consequence of Sound on Thursday about MM and kept hoping Bjork would headline but then got another CoS message saying it was JJ. That seems like a lazy move on Roo's part. I know it isnt easy replacing a headliner that quickly but you would think Bjork would have been the logical move but maybe that's just me.
I took a nap during JJ. I dont dislike him but a nap just sounded more appealing and I needed it this year because I wouldnt have made it during what turned out to be an amazing LN.
Turtles are, actually quite sexy, if you think about it. I’m getting an erection just thinking about turtles. No, not a stripper named turtles, that’s not funny. Actual turtles.

Frat bros dont typically listen to folk rock in my experience and M&S are made up of talented musicians. I am not asking you to like their music but just because you dont like it doesnt mean they dont have talent and that it is frat bro music.

The most common reaction I got was a shoulder shrug type attitude. It wasnt anything anyone really wanted to see but it could have been worse. Roo was in a bad spot and they probably did the best they could.

I'm actually glad that this didn't happen. Waiting in the pit line during Mule and Nas was awesome. I would have wanted to kill myself if I would have been sitting there during JJ.
