I would really like to know how the fourth artist on the bill doesnt move up to that slow being that her show was only two hours earlier. She is accomplished enough, she has enough material, and her set was packed so she would have brought it and her amazing evening set would have been magnified to probably 2nd best behind Macca for people that arent even big fans of hers. I am really curious why this didnt happen. JJ could have had her slot and it would have been a good progression of music, me thinks.
Her set wasn't packed. I walked over to What after Matt and Kim. I was surprised at how relatively empty it was, especially since I thought people would be camping for Mumford. I walked into the 85% full at best left pit at 6:55 and had a great spot. That's when I discovered Mumford had canceled which resulted in a four hour rest at camp. I still got my dose of Mumford anyway. A diehard in the general vicinity blasted them forever as I tried to have my nap.
Ya I'm not sure where you were for her set but I could've easily walked right up to the back of the pit without touching a single person...
Also, I heard that they tried to book another "touring headliner-caliber act" last minute. Anyone know who that was?

I was right up near the pit and tried to get in but couldnt at like 6:40PM. I was up near the railing of the pit and it looked pack. I walked out during her last song and it took forever because it was pretty packed for a late afternoon/evening set. If she would have been unopposed, it would have been more packed. You have to consider the fact that she was up against Beach House, Dwight Yoakem, Comedy Bang, A-Trak and then the smaller stages. I didnt mean to say it was headliner packed but for being up against like 8 other acts and other shit, there were a lot of people. It seemed to be just as many, if not more than Wilco the previous day.
Turtles are, actually quite sexy, if you think about it. I’m getting an erection just thinking about turtles. No, not a stripper named turtles, that’s not funny. Actual turtles.

I was at the end of Passion Pit/beginning of Wilco. I was able to get much closer halfway through Bjork than I was at the beginning of Wilco. Granted the caliber of headliner following was much bigger but I don't think it had anything to do with the opposing acts. I'd say that Wilco was up against much bigger and more popular acts than Bjork. I think Bjork probably would've been better suited in the xx slot on Which. The crowd would've fit there and it would've allowed her to play LN.
Jack Johnson was pretty cool but we were expecting another Jack to replace Mumford when the rumors started going on thursday… you know, the one that lives in Nashville and is way overdue at Roo…

I don't follow.
Jack White ... Who had Jack Johnson at his store Saturday for a special performance.
I really thought the show could of been better with more guests.. More anything.. People saying "Good thing they didn't move someone already on the lineup up." But I disagree..
Imagine if they would of just moved Bjork's shizzy day slot (which by many accounts was one of the best shows of Roo) into a night headlining spot followed by a huge firework show?
I know Roo was put in a bad bind but with 2-3 million$$ in cash they get at that contract break with Mumford they could of done better FOR SURE.
His laid back playing was great and all. But for a main headliner on Saturday night? I could use more dancing and more tempo more lights AND/OR more guests.
And he hasn't played with is band in TWO YEARS with no practice. People say "well that is why he sucked" Well really this is a reason you don't move him into a Saturday headliner spot. Rather you move someone who is ready for that main stage and move him into their slot.

I got the message from Consequence of Sound on Thursday about MM and kept hoping Bjork would headline but then got another CoS message saying it was JJ. That seems like a lazy move on Roo's part. I know it isnt easy replacing a headliner that quickly but you would think Bjork would have been the logical move but maybe that's just me.
I took a nap during JJ. I dont dislike him but a nap just sounded more appealing and I needed it this year because I wouldnt have made it during what turned out to be an amazing LN.
HAHAHA I wrote ^^^^ up one post then saw this... Totalllllllllllllllllllly agree.
I was actually freaking ECSTATIC when I heard Jack Johnson was replacing Mumford. I was looking forward to seeing Mumford but I have never seen Jack Johnson (and never thought I would) and would have definitely chosen him over Mumford. Although his set was a teensy bit sloppy, I thoroughly enjoyed it...and I loved that he threw in the Mumford and Bonnaroo songs

I was excited for Mumford and for hearing Babel live for the first time so I was really bummed out by it. But Jack did a really good job. I was expecting a late night so to have a chill set was perfect. I have a lot of respect for him for stepping up and playing and also doing the Mumford cover.

First time in three Roos I've ever skipped a headliner. I don't like Mumford, but my special lady friend does, so I would've gone to them. However, seeing as neither of us have even a remote interest in Jack, neither of us had any issue with skipping him altogether. Best surprise all weekend IMO b/c it allowed us to get a killer spot for the soul superjam, which was life-changing. That said, I've got mad respect for Jack now for stepping up, especially after not having played in a while.
I was one of the guys extremely excited about Jack over Mumford. I would have gone to Mumford and would have had fun at that show but jacks set was great.
To me the set was RAW in the best of ways. I felt like we had a bonnaroo friend up on stage leading us through some campfire songs and it was great.
This was the first time in the four years I have been at Roo that I have gotten in the pit and it was amazing for me.
BY THE WAY...AS I WALKED OUT OF THE PIT...I NOTICED ASHLEY CAPPS HAD BEEN IN THE PIT WITH US!!!
I LOVE ASHLEY AND HIS LOVE FOR MUSIC...I THANKED HIM FOR EVERYTHING HE DOES. IT MADE FOR THE PERFECT END TO JACKS SET.
I was still able to get a great spot for the incredible rock and soul superjam after even after being in the pit

I haven't made it through this entire thread but it's making me feel old. "When I was a kid my parents forced me to listen to In Between Dreams" and "when I was 12 I got Brushfire Fairytales" man I'm old.
I caught Jack Johnson at the first Roo and had no idea who he was. I enjoyed the set and actually stopped at a store on my way home and bought Brushfire Fairytales. Had that CD in my car all summer. I still enjoy him to this day and was happy he got added at the last minute. I had planned on getting some rest at camp before the Superjam but headed to JJ instead. Needless to say, it was a long day.
I LOVE JJ!! And I loved his set, mistakes and all, perfection is boring! I heard a rumor that he was going to replace Mumford from a stranger, I grabbed them by the arm and told them that they better not be getting my hopes up for nothing or I would find them and they would pay for what they'd done. I never thought I would get the chance to see Jack and this opportunity made the highlight of my bonnaroo. I will never be happier than I was standing in the back of the what field swaying and singing every lyric, my friend joked when he messed up that I should be doing the set because I apparently knew his songs better than he did, haha
Jack gets a lot of shiz, but I still enjoy some of his music (I still own his first two records.) I didn't catch him at Bonnaroo because I was at Preservation Hall Jazz Band, but the guy has a way with melodies.

As long as it wasn't WSP I say they did a good job on a replacement on the last moment. I do find it hard to believe that the promoters wouldn't pay for travel for the Black Keys considering how much money they were saving on Mumford not playing.

In 2011...I was extremely underwhelmed by Black Keys set. It was my third time seeing them and was by far the most lack luster for me. I don't know, it just seemed too short. Kinda glad they didn't make the headliner spot as I would be nervous of the same thing happening. M&S, I saw them in '11 as well and had an awesome time. But imo, I really don't think they were the best choice for a headliner. As for JJ, I'm not a fan but props to the guy for stepping up and taking the challenge. Very awesome of him. Also after seeing him in '08, it left me a very large time frame to grab a few beers and get an awesome spot for the Superjam.

I will admit that I wasn't a fan of the idea of them playing in a big stage slot in 2011, but after seeing them last year at Global fest I feel like their sound has grown enough to fill out a big fest. If they have a new album out between now and sometime next year I can see them being one of the top canidates to headline next year.
This is why I don't get too worked up in the headliners thread... one bad (or what some people think is bad) headliner will not ruin the weekend. It was cool he came out, it wasn't on caliber with M&S, but it worked. No one rioted, people had a good enough time, and then we all moved on to see other amazing acts (anyone who left JJ early to get a good spot for the Rock 'n Soul Superjam knows this worked out in our favor).
That being said, happy to check JJ off my list, & really hoping to get another chance to see M&S.
I had honestly never listened to any of Jack Johnson's material before roo. Went to the show with an open mind and enjoyed it. Was kinda upset about missing Mumford at first, but they are a semi-lock for next year so no worries. jack is pretty awesome for filling in during roos hour of need, my biggest fear after hearing about mumford cancelling was that the lumineers would be bumped up to being headliner.

You will... At Bonnaroo 2014, you can bet your bottom dollar on it
I'll take that bet.
I just posted in the headliner thread but if you want i'd bet you $100 Mumford vs the Field pending no medical conditions. Mumford has 1 of the 3 headlining spots in 2014.
