11 David Byrne & St. Vincent 12 Tom Hetty 13 JEFF the Brotherhood 14 Amadou & Mariam 15 Bombino
oh yeah...Killer Mike f'n ruled too. So many great sets.
1. Paul McCartney - I don't have to tell you guys how amazing this show was. You already know. 2. Pretty Lights - I had the most fun at this show; I haven't danced so much since, well, probably ever. 3. Billy Idol - I camped out to be on the rail for this and boy am I glad I did. Great performance and super tight band. Plus it was nice to actually be able to "see" a performance. 4. Of Monsters & Men - I just love them, and the molly girls in front of me were pretty entertaining. 5. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes - fun show, and fun afterward at the second show (surprise set @ sonic stage) 6. Dirty Projectors - didn't know much about them before the show but I really love the two female singers' voices 7. Hip Hop Superjam - stands out to me mostly because of something random that one of the performers said (idk which one, I couldn't see for shit) that was meaningful to me on sort of a spiritual level. Weird huh? 8. Jared Logan (comedian) at the Apples to Apples lounge. I went in just to charge my phone and was pleasantly surprised to find him hilariously hosting an Apples to Apples tournament. 9. Sheepdogs - wasn't planning on seeing them but I caught the end of both of their shows, and loved their sound 10. Pesto Mozzadilla & Blueberry Lemonade at Feel Good Foods

In no particular order
Jim James Superjam (Probably my favorite late night of my 5 years going) Swans Polyphonic Spree (I had wanted to make this happen for 13 years. They did not disappoint.) The National (Matt was right up against me during Mr. November. I about passed out.) Foals Bjork PTM (would have been better if it wasn't so hot) Death Grips Local Natives Killer Mike
Last Edit: Jun 18, 2013 10:17:36 GMT -5 by Dave Maynar: I'm so changeable. - Back to Top
1. McCartney - best show I have ever seen, and I would say I'm only a casual Beatles fan. The band was on point (except for the one lyrical misstep during Hey Jude by the lead guitarist) and Paul can still sing with the best of them. Blackbird and Yesterday got the me a little misty...
2. Soul Superjam - Being able to get 2nd row for this was the silver lining in the Mumford cancellation. Just an incredible evening of music by an incredible collection of musicians. Bringing Brittany Howard and R. Kelly out took it to a whole other level of amazing. Billy Idol was cool too, but didn't really fit the vibe of the set.
3. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - This was a bucket list show for me, and it lived up to everything I thought it would. Mike Campbell is one of my all time favorite guitar players and he was flawless. The encore of Don't Come Around Here No More, You Wreck Me, and American Girl were a perfect way to cap the weekend off and seeing It's Good to Be King live with the extended jam was perfect on every level.
4. Preservation Hall Jazz Band - I hadn't planned on catching their set until Mumford cancelled, but considering I had no desire to see anything else in the evening on Saturday, including Jack Johnson, I beelined to This tent to post up in the 2nd row for the Superjam. It's obvious that these guys love playing and appreciated the crowd's response to them. An already great show was elevated when Jim James came out for St. James Infirmary and another song. Just an incredible performance.
5. Lord Huron - Lonesome Dreams was one of my favorite albums from last year, but I was prepared to be a little let down when they couldn't pull it off live. Fortunately, some of the songs sounded even fuller live. This was another band fully engaged in their surroundings and they wanted to put on a show for the crowd. I can see them coming back in two years and being on one of the stages without a problem.
6. The National - I saw them in a theater last week, so I missed the first part of their set for Edward Sharpe, but they were firing on all cylinders for what I did see. Matt Bellinger is a showman and was up to his usual antics on and off the stage while still keeping the songs the focus. These guys easily held down the preheadliner slot, but I almost think that this might be as high as they can get with their style being what it is.
7. Kacey Musgraves - This was a perfect selection to open the What on Sunday. I woke up feeling great Sunday morning, so I got in line and was on the rail. Her band is really tight, though there is nothing really to write home about as far as musicianship is concerned. Kacey is just an incredible songwriter, very smooth vocals, and had plenty of good banter on stage to keep the crowd engaged. She is going to be one of the biggest stars in country music within the next 3 years and it will be well deserved considering she does all of her own songwriting.
8. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros - Speaking of showman, Alex Ebert is that and then some. It was obvious that they don't play by any rules (no setlist, open mic sharing time with the crowd) and that is their appeal. It can also be a negative though. Alex got a little sidetracked during his intro to Up From Below and had to go over to talk with Jade about to play on keys at one point.
9. Alt J - Considering I was on about hour 36 without any sleep at this point, fighting to keep a good spot during the Japandroids didn't seem worth it. Watching from a distance was still enjoyable and the sound was perfect at the back. I need to catch a club show at some point to get the full show experience though.
10. Calexico - Starting 15 minutes late due to trouble during sound check was a little annoying, but once they got going, it was a pleasure watching these guys. These guys are old pros by now, but with Algiers they showed they still have it. The horns, accordions, and other assortment of instruments bring their songs to life and give them energy that isn't on the record.
Honorable Mentions: Twenty One Pilots - tons of energy, exciting show John Fullbright - half empty tent, but Fullbright's songwriting is second to none. Walked up right before he started and got a prime spot. Black Prairie - another half empty Bluegrass tent on Sunday, another outstanding performance from some veteran musicians.

1. Soul Superjam 2. Paul McCartney 3. Foals 4. The Revivalists at Cafe Where - this show gave me a huge burst of energy that propelled me until 3:00am. David Shaw (lead singer) said afterwards it was the most fun he'd ever had playing music. I love it when an artist has as amazing a Bonnaroo experience as I am. 5. Swans 6. David Byrne & St. Vincent 7. Baroness

01. Paul McCartney - Five rows of people back from the rail. Dead center. Life changed. Never cried at a concert before. Was hysterically laughing/crying/smiling during Hey Jude and Blackbird.
02. Bjork - Also in pit for this. Live altered a little more. I felt like the reclusive nature of the set (no video screens/no photography/ect) pulled me in more.
03. David Byrne & St. Vincent - Almost front center rail for this one, too.
04. Preservation Hall Jazz Band - First time seeing them. Absolutely wonderful.
05. Tallest Man on Earth - Never underestimate the power of just guitar and voice.
06. Mac DeMarco (Solar Stage Set) - Short but sweet. He had great stage presence and had the crowd absolutely in his hand for "Still Together." Hopefully he blows up and Roo books him again.
07. Alt-J - Amazing despite getting dropkicked in the head by multiple crowdsurfers.
08. ON AN ON - Sleeping giant set. Great start to Thursday night.
09. Japandroids - I feel like I haven't seen a Thursday crowd have the ferver like that crowd had for Japandroids. Amazing energy.
10. Empire of the Sun - Dat stage setup, man.
Animal Collective probably would have been up there had I not crashed early on Friday and thus missed them.
1. Mac Demarco 2. Paul McCartney 3. A$AP Rocky 4. Father John Misty 5. Beach House 6. Death Grips 7. Purity Ring 8. Killer Mike 9. Four Tet 10. Action Bronson
1 Macca Wow just Wow 2 Petty Great 3 Edward Sharpe both shows were great but I loved the sonic stage set 4 Jack Johnson. Much better then expected I liked his effort 5 soul Superjam so many awesome guests 6 hip hop Superjam Method man and red man hell yeah 7 capital cities i am now going to see them again later this month 8 21 pilots just put on a great live show 9 the lumineers I wish the sound was better I will see them again somewhere smaller 10. Wu tang crossed them off the musical bucket list
I was disappointed by Walk the moon - their songs seemed slow and I didn't have the best spot Of monsters and men - I'm sure they were great but I was to hot to enjoy it

Paul McCartney Empire of the Sun Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (he really knew how to get a crowd moving) Bjork Frank Turner (also great at controlling a crowd) Billy Idol The National Tom Petty Alt J Jack Johnson (not the biggest fan, but he was a very relaxing set that was much needed for that jam packed day)
1. Bjork- Not really a fan so the idea initially was to watch the first few songs and then maybe head over to see Beach House or get some dinner. The LAST thing I expected was to have my mind completely blown and stay for every single second. The combination of her being on the Main Stage with it's huge sound system, the trippy graphics on the screens, the 14 member all female choir, and playing at sunset was a recipe for pure magic. I honestly had tears flowing several times.

1. Macca 2. Bjork 3. Hip Hop Superjam 4. Rock n Soul Superjam 5. R Kelly 6. Mac DeMarco (sonic stage) 7. Death Grips 8. Kendrick Lamar 9. Killer Mike 10. David Byrne & St. Vincent
HM: Lee Fields & the Expressions, Jim James, Django Django, Local Natives
1. Paul McCartney -- Best show of my life. What more can be said on this one?
2. Jim James Superjam (one back from the rail, center) -- Didn't know what to expect, and I was positive that it couldn't top Bjork from right beforehand, but holy smokes it sure did. John Oates, Pres Hall, Brittany Howard, Larry Graham, Billy Idol, R. Kelly - just insane. Can we get Jim to just do a Superjam every year?
3. Bjork (in the pit!) -- I had never listened to Bjork. No real reason, just never got around to it. She's someone I never would have expected I would get to see, so I'm glad I got the chance. Just bizarre and super fun. She just radiates happiness.
4. The National (in the pit!) -- Seen these guys a bunch of times, and they rock every single time. And Annie (*swoon*) showing up was great, although I was kind of hoping/expecting she would. The new songs were great, And I'm glad to see these guys continue to get bigger, they totally deserve it. Really hope they can break into a headliner spot before they get out of the game.
5. Father John Misty -- Dude was crazy. I expected him to be kinda funny, but this was surprisingly intense. And loud.
6. Grizzly Bear (pit, inside center rail) -- Pretty straight forward, no-frills set, but this band is so insanely good it didn't matter. And Solange doing Two Weeks - just, wow.
7. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers -- I just sat/laid down in the back during almost all of his set, but I really enjoyed it. Great finish.
8. David Byrne and St. Vincent -- Only caught the second half, but hearing a couple St. Vincent songs, and a couple from Talking Heads was just a great way to finish the weekend.
9. Preservation Hall Jazz Band -- They played right before the Superjam, which I wasn't aware was gonna happen. Obviously it was a very pleasant surprise, as was Jim coming out for a couple songs. Oddly, I've seen them several times, and actually never once on purpose; I always seem to stumble backwards into them playing somewhere, and I always enjoy the heck out of 'em.
10. Django Django -- Never listened to 'em before, but this one was a lot of fun. Lots of energy.
I can't even begin to process all the amazing music I saw this weekend.
1. Animal Collective was a pleasant surprise. 2. Soul Superjam I was really tired for it but I'm glad I didn't leave with my friends. It was amazing! 3. Paul did amazing as usual. So glad to see him with people I love this time. 4. Bjork! Wow! So glad I was in the pit for this one. I had her songs stuck in my head the rest of the festival. I was blown away! 5. Action Bronson KILLED IT! That was such an awesome show. So glad I made it to that one! 6. Local Natives- Really awesome live and was great to watch in pit with fellow Inforooers. 7. Tame Impala- Not gonna lie, I was impressed.
Anddd my mind just went blank. I'll have to let it soak in more because I can't remember who else I saw hahahaha 8.

1) Sir Thomas Petty and the Heartbreakers : Best Sunday Closer in my 6 years. Nobody left the show, incredible cover of Friend of the Devil, that version of Rebels has yet to leave my head. I remember TPH being a really chill show, and clearly I remember incorrectly as that turned into a dance party. Normally excited for Phish or WSP to end, I wish TP was still playing.
2) Foals: Expected to enjoy, received greatness, somehow the audience grew more intense with every song.
3) ALO: Late night Thursday (Normally exclude Sonic shows due to duration, but Sonic killed too.) Something about seeing great muscians that are having fun.
4) Alt-J: Everything I expected them to be an a litte bit more.
5) Futurebirds: I've heard complaints about the setlist, but they played hard, had a blast, and that translated to the crowd.
6) Wilco: Only this low because they started a bit slow, and i was stuck in back trying to remedy a work situation.
7) Ed Sharp: The Which Stage set into that unbelievable Sonic Stage show was an all-time highlight. After typing this, I realize he's misrated and should be higher.
8) Macklemore and Lewis: The guy completely destroyed my personal "Hip Hop doesn't translate on the main stage" Theory.
9) Fr. John Misty: Sounded great, sweet setlist, just thought the energy and crowd interaction of previous shows was missing slightly.
10) ZZ Top: This was a shocker, Didn't expect them to sound half as good as they did. Found myself lamenting the lack of Robert Randolph on the farm, as that could have been a delicious sit in...
Honerable Mention: Bjork, intersting visuals, never saw someone play without a sound man, and made it up to the back of the pit as she drove the crowd to Lumineers. Macca: Now i can say I saw him play Band on the Run, Animal Collective: Bounced between AnCo and Pretty Lights, should camped out at AnCo and slid over to PL after the show. Lord Huron, Wu Tang, ended early and arrived late, only reason its this low.
Bonnaroo 2008-2013
0ct 11 Pearl Jam
Oct 12 Pearl Jam
March 16 Arcade Fire
April 29 Arcade Fire
Sept 4 Wilco
Sept 9 The Hold Steady
Oct 16 Pearl Jam
Oct 17 Gaslight Anthem
Such a hard thing to do but if I have I rank them based off of my own personnel taste and experience I would have to go with the following...
1 - Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls
Frank Turner was one of my favorite shows of the weekend, probably tied for first with Sir Paul and Weird Al.
It's too bad more people couldn't see him. 3:30/4pm Saturday was the toughest time slot for me all weekend. Frank Turner, Tallest Man on Earth, Portugal. The Man, and Four Tet. How are we supposed to choose! I haven't heard much about the other shows but personally I'm very very very happy I saw Frank.

In no particular order -
Tame Impala Baroness (crushing show that was intense from the start) Bjork Father John Misty (better than expected - guy's got serious stage presence) Of Monsters and Men (better than expected) Deap Valley Kasey Musgraves (refreshing country with an attitude) Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros Jim James - enjoyed it more than a MMJ show Soul Superjam
(I've seen McCartney before and this was very similar for me... so it didn't blow me away like it did other people. Don't get me wrong - he's a fantastic performer, just not in my top 10.)
1. Paul McCartney 2. Soul SuperJam 3. Tame Impala 4. Jim James 5. R. Kelly 6. Jack Johnson 7. Mac Demarco (Sonic) 8. Lord Huron 9. Father John Misty 10. Bjork
Extra: I just want to say that Johnnyswim and Lucius both surprised me and put on incredible shows. Really enjoyed Walk the Moon, Django Django, Kacey Musgraves, and the Stepkids as well.
I saw people leaving in droves, even after the rain stopped. It really felt like he lost a lot of the audience in the like... third fifth of the set. He was good, but I wouldn't say unimpeachable or anything.
