Love this story. I used to have this car CD player in my room that would exclusively play College Dropout. My iPod mini rocked Late Registration. Every time I hear All of the Lights I think about the lead up to MBDTF when Kanye was in his golden age of tweeting. He tweeted one time "I just threw kazoo on this bitch!!" referring to AOTL (probably back when it was Ghetto University and had a Drake verse).
Also I thought Runaway was kinda whack when I first heard it on the radio, and so I didn't listen to closely on the album version. Then on one of my first listen-throughs I was driving back from a long trip and crossing the bay bridge as the vocoder breakdown was playing and it hit me how incredible the song is. I almost hate how much I love MBDTF because it is so clearly Kanye giving us everything he knows we want from him.
It's funny because I don't think the college dropout left my Walkman CD player for about a year. The only time it ever did was to put in my computer or playstation to listen to it on there instead. I don't think any album of his will take The college dropout down as my favorite. Maybe it's because nostalgia reasons I'm not sure but I just can't feel right putting any album over it, although MBDTF got close.

MBDTF is my second favorite Kanye album but I think he overdid it on a lot of songs.
I remember when I first heard Dark fantasy is didn't have the girl singing the "so high" parts during the "oh oh ohs". Made me so mad when I heard that addition. I think he made too much of a point to do extra shit on every track almost.
The intro to monster for me is pointless. Swizz and RZA (and cyhi) shouldn't be on So Appalled. I could have done without one of the extensions on Runaway and Devil in a new Dress.
Kanye being Kanye made the album what it is which is great. Just nitpicking.
Serious question, how is Runaway or All Of The Lights a top 10 Kanye song? Maybe on a mainstream level. Oh and yes Gorgeous IS better than both of them, as is Dark Fantasy.

All of the lights is a great song but 2nd best kanye of all time it isnt. Maybe the top 10-15. Gone, new slaves, gorgeous, runaway, heard em say, through the wire, family business, drive slow, hey mama, everything i am, theres 10 better than all of the lights and im not even really trying.

I love when Kanye opens up like he did on Runaway. Same way he does on family business and hey mama which are also two of my favorites. Any time Kanye opens up on an emotional level I think it's really cool. The production is fantastic in it. I could literally just get an emotional feeling from listening to that without the words, but him basically calling himself out in the song and admitting his flaws mixed with the overall different style of it, I just love it. The music video, and the song in general. Seeing it live is absolutely incredible as well. I couldn't disagree more that gorgeous is better than either of those even though I like it.
I think for a single Runaway is a great song. And All of The Lights is great, seeing it performed Live always gets me so hyped.
Honestly for me personally though, I would put I Wonder over Runaway even. I would easily sacrifice Kanye performing Runaway if I meant I Wonder would be played.
And you didn't say anything about Dark Fantasy :-p
Oh, and not trying to start anything, but I think him opening up on Family Business and Hey Mama really aren't comparable to Runaway.
Every year there are at least a dozen "expected" collaborations because acts are on the farm together and they don't always work out. I really think it depends on what Kanye wants to do with the show.
I will be happy no matter what he does. Hell he can bring it Paul Wall and do "Drive Slow"!
I would actually LOOOVE this...but Paul Wall doesn't exist anymore I don't think...
So, AC saying in the AMA yesterday that they had a Kanye West surprise set in the works made me start considering outlandish shit, since I never would have thought they'd bring out a headliner-tier act for a surprise appearance.
I was listening to "Diamonds of Sierra Leone" and got to pondering...what if he's performing that song, when all of a sudden
I GOT IT FROM HERE YE, DAMN
And finally...RUNAWAY>>>All Of The Lights ...that is all.

I agree it's a different kind of opening up. Dark fantasy is great. That and good morning are my favorite opening tracks of his. I love I wonder too Lol I really do love them all and to be honest my rankings could change daily.
People are all saying their top Kanye songs. I really like his throw some d's remix. I don't know why, I just find it catchy and awesome. It's in my top 10. He'll never play it, but man, I enjoy it.
Also, I don't get the 808s hate. I love the album for what it is and was supposed to be. No bad language. No rapping. And still great.(IMO.)

I don't hate it, but I think it tails off pretty hard after about halfway through.

Totally forgot that he made that remix, and I definitely didn't know he made a video for it.

Tails off? The second half has bad news, street lights, and coldest winter on it. Thats definitely not tailing off
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

I do not like Street Lights or Robocop at all. Bad news is meh for me. It may just be me getting bored of the whole vibe after a while. I love how it starts though so idk.
I usually skip to Coldest Winter though. Love that song.

Ill give you Robocop but I really think streetlights in one of kanyes better songs. It just gets me emotional. I absolutely loved it when he played it on the first leg of the yeezus tour but was a little sad I didnt see it pop up on the second leg. I hope he brings it back for roo.

Really? I find it soooo cheesy. To each his own I guess.
Ok well I thought I'd share that I've given Yeezus another listen, and upon second listen I actually like it. MBDTF is still my fav Kanye album, but Yeezus is still pretty good.

I definitely didn't know there was a video! This is awesome. Totally made my day. Thank you so much!

What about the College Dropout though?!
Oh I've always liked college dropout. I just like the artistic story telling that is in MBDTF. It's uniqueness puts it at the top for me.
To be completely fair, Sigur Ros killed it that night....
Okay... I am not going to argue that but am I missing something? Has Sigur Ros came up in this thread? I have no problem talking about them because I love them but I am a little confused.
