The mass appeal. I've watched videos, listened to his music. Maybe it'll be different in person?

"As of 2013, West has won a total of 21 Grammy Awards, making him one of the most awarded artists of all-time." - Wiki But it's not always for everyone. I get that. A lot of times, I'll shake my head when he releases an album and think, "He's lost his mind and off the deep end." Then I'll come back to it because I've got a beat in my head, and that's when the album usually comes around. I don't know if you've done this, but if you listen to his discography from front to back, AND get a timeline context for the albums, it's like gaining access to another level of understanding Kanye and his music. I'm not dogging you for not getting it...just wanting to share something that has really changed the way I listen to him.
Example: There's "old" (1st 3 albums) and "new" (last 3 albums) Kanye and a clear dividing line (808s). Let's look at a few events around that dividing line. 1. The College Dropout (2004) 2. Late Registration (2005) 3. Graduation (2007) Mother dies(tragically mind you) in 2007 Fiance of 18 months and girlfriend of 6 years leaves him in 2008. WTF AFTER WHAT HE JUST WENT THROUGH?! Bonnaroo 2008... 4. 808s & Heartbreak (2008) Taylor Swift...dat bish. 5. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010) 6. Watch the Throne (with Jay-Z) (2011) 7. Yeezus (2013)

Your post was vague. I didn't have a lot to work with.
Kanye, like many other superstar-level acts, are likely going to be divisive. If you haven't followed along with their career it's a little tougher to get into them. Personally, I've watched Kanye go from hungry beat-maker to sought after guest star to the newest force in rap and finally into the artistic, egotistical juggernaut he is today. So that plays a big part in my excitement for this set. It's a bit tougher for me to get into a big act that I've never had a personal interest in besides "everyone says they are awesome so I must be missing something".
Not all artists "work" for everyone. There are many, many lists and examples of great songs and the emotion behind them from Kanye in this thread and elsewhere on the boards. If you're listening to the music....are you reading lyrics as well to pick up on everything? Have you watched high quality videos like from his Coachella set or some other HD version (as opposed to some fan's youtube video)?
If you like rap/hip hop then you may like the show. If you don't "get it" in terms of Kanye then you may not be turned around come Bonnaroo. I guess we'll see

Kanye lost me when he compared being a hip hop artist to being a police office or soldier in war. "I'm risking my life out there!" ... Really Kanye? Really?..
Thanks guys. Yeah, I've watched High Res stuff. I don't read along to lyrics unless I genuinely can't understand them (unless I'm reading liner notes, album in hand). I just know he is dearly loved by his fans. I think I'll take the front to back approach over the next couple of work days. Seeing as I started with The College Dropout, which I loved and wore the ever living piss out of (CD scratched to hell from being in a cd player), I think that's probably the best place to start. Maybe it'll set in that way. I just really want to be able to enjoy everything I possibly can. I understand there are a lot of bands that I simply DO NOT like or vibe with, but Kanye isn't that, it's just something I haven't quite grown with. But I do love hip hop. And I've seen a lot of live hip hop, so I understand that aspect also. Speaking of which, I saw a live performance of Deltron 3030 with an orchestra last week on youtube. It was a KEXP performance. Pretty cool if you are into that album.
Again, thanks for the advice!
Glad we could give you something to work with. And thanks for being open minded. Not sure where you first post was headed...sounded a little trolly. Hope to hear back from you that you "get it" and can enjoy his performance, as he was selected to be a headliner for a reason. Enjoy listening through again and like any other form of art, keep context in mind.

I don't think I'll ever understand people who are total hypocrites and judge Kanye as person and not an artist yet don't do the same for all other artists(Wayne Coyne for instance).

It's better than supporting the mindset that the average police officer is a soldier in a war.

Anyone who misses this show or leaves early is our of their damn mind
True story.
But again, I'm a huge Kanye fan. This will be my 8th time seeing him, and he has never disappointed in the slightest. But really, his show's aren't hip hop/rap shows. His set will make Lil Wayne in 11 look more horrible than it already was.
And who else is with me and super excited about seeing Chance later on that night? I'm sure it wont happen, but if somehow one of them appeared at the other's show.... that'd be insane. Even if they have no songs together its possible, I mean Kanye made an appearance for Tyler at the Odd Future Carnival. And they do share that Chicago connection.....

It's casual racism tbh
Exactly, or turn around and casually drop the n-word on social media.

Don't know what that's supposed to mean
I just tend to notice that people who get uppity about Kanye's "attitude" also tend to think it's okay to use racial or gay slurs. DOUBLE STANDARD Y'ALL.

Not to argue, but I never said I judge him solely on his idiotic/laughable outbursts. He's a solid artist, I just thought it was pretty over the top for him to claim his job as an artist as being THAT dangerous. Maybe if he were in the limelight in the 90s when rappers were shooting each other left and right.. but not today. same goes for Coyne.. that being said, I plan on being at both the Kanye & Flips shows.

Jesus Christ you're a fucking creep. Whatever, it's not worth getting into a fight with someone over slang, because generation gaps, yeah I use faggot every once in awhile (never to describe a gay person), since you seem to like reading my twitter I'm sure you've seen me say that I need to stop saying that. Whatever, I'm 19, all 19 year olds say stupid things

We've already covered this incident, if you listen to the whole quote he was specifically referring to some of the "stunts" in the Yeezus tour being dangerous, not generally being "an artist."

Dear god, the Flips are going to be there again? They must be a blind spot in my bonnaroo brain now.
