I understand wanting to hear more songs out of that set. He was destroying stuff from all over his discography. The rants are part of his performance, though. I enjoyed when he, for example, tore through Dropout hits more, but I didn't think any of his ranting or crowd interaction detracted from the set. It's just a different part of the show.
Weirdly, I don't see a lot of complaints about Jack White's aimless banter on "having something better to do" or "people who have jobs" on here. "Hey, who works in the auto industry?"
Edit: nevermind, looks like the Jack White banter was covered in "Jack White" thread, of all places.
Nice meeting you in the pit by the way Lol if you can remember that.
haha I was "awake" at that point. Twas awesome. But then Monie told me we met Cokes , Jaz , and maybe someone else. I was stunned to hear it. No recollection and I probably made an ass of myself. Pretty awfu but the rest of the weekend made up for it.
Yes, it was Cokes, Jaz, and Token. You were shwasted, glad I cut you off when I did. Luckily, I didn't give away your vodka because it came in handy when I lost my bottle of American Honey whiskey (along with my phone) right before Disclosure. Got my phone back, but that whiskey is long gone
I'm debating with my friend about the set right now and he just texted me and said, "My problem was that he got a second chance, and used the whole first half of his time to poke everyone that came to give him a shot in the eye (like me). As a paid artist, he understand the value of time; but that is one thing he clearly doesn't value of his fans. That's not art; that's business. He's a businessman first, and an artist second. Plenty of other people who don't need to disrespect a new set of fans because of what an old set made happen... he had nearly 60,000 people at his show this weekend, and left with the same number of fans he came in with. To me, that's just bad business - and bad art."
What should I say to that? All I have typed out so far is, "You're an idiot, I hate you, die in a fire, your moms hot, lose my number." Anything else I should add?
He has clearly reached a point in his career where the money is secondary to the art and theater of it all.
I camped out for Kanye in front of the rail since Janelle Monae, stood in mud for much of it. And let me tell you, it was worth it. Kanye QUACKING killed it. I was a little disappointed he didn't do more tracks, where was flashing lights, or homecoming? But I still loved it. That Blood on The Leaves Encore!!!!!!! The beat to Jesus Walks was sick as well.
For everyone saying the crowd hated it, and was booing. Everyone up close was going crazy and cheering, I never heard any boos at all.
But yeah, after his show, I started finding Kanye is a gay fish and quack kanye graffiti EVERYWHERE. Bonnaroo, does not like Kanye, and its sad.
Basically ditto to what you said! I fucking LOVED Kanye's set and obviously we all knew a rant (or three) was coming!
I agree...the legitimate complaints are fine (time between songs being a little longer than preferred) and the idea that some people disliked unfairly but not everyone who was at the set hated it. Lots of people having a great time.
"even amidst the 25 minute rant that he continues to tack onto 'Runaway'."
Couldn't have been much more than 10 right?
Three rants, none longer than 10 minutes. I think CoS tends to overstate things anyway.
I want to say I categorically hate the people who thought holding up their chairs in the pit was a good idea.
I saw those dudes wedge their way into the pit line with those over their heads and I said to the girls in front of me something to the extent of "I guess they think they'll be too tired from being dicks to stand for the whole set."
I don't give a fuck who you are, if you are a musician and you don't play music for a full 10 minutes that's fucking terrible. I don't want to hear you speak, I want to hear you rap and perform. And he didn't even play his entire time slot, like really? Oh, and the autotune on his voice all the time was so goddamn annoying. This was by far the worst headlining performance I've ever seen at Bonnaroo.
Oh and for the record I love Kanye's music...thats why I'm pissed because he didn't play it.
woah woah woah. he auto-tuned his voice? you've got to be fucking kidding me ...

Also, who saw that kid whip out his schlong and piss himself in the pit?
Hell of a top of the page, if I do say so myself.
Dude I was the guy right behind him in the pink leapard shorts and yellow yolo shirt. That shit was a hilarious and a total what the fuck moment. And to the two awesome Umphreys fans I talked with right after the pissing occurred, thank you for introducing me to Lucy, she was such a kind girl
The fact that half of the audience (near ME, at least) showed up simply to spew hatred into his face, at BONNAROO, of all places, was what really set the tone of the show for me. I couldn't be in that crowd. It bummed me out so much that I felt like Bonnaroo had taken a quick dive into something it'd never been before. I'd never seen a group of hateful people at 'Roo like that. Shit killed me. Then I cried during Goodbye Yellow Brick Road because it felt like Bonnaroo's Positivity Radiation was truly over. WWHHHYYYY, HATTTTAAAAZ?
I know what you mean. I was moving around to get a decent view and got too far back by the people who didn't give a shit. I couldn't take it either so I walked back up to where I started the set by the real fans who were engaged with the show. But that's not to say I didn't see stuff like that in past years. Eminem and Metallica got a lot of hate and heckling from the years that I've gone, with people cracking jokes back in the What stage field because they've got nothing better to do. Personally, if I don't like a headliner then I'm going to get an amazing spot for one of the late night tents and wait it out. But people are weird and like to hate on things....it's annoying. Just know that there were a lot of fans who did enjoy it and I doubt he's the last act that gets a negative reaction from the Bonnaroo audience.
I was in the pit and although I didn't enjoy it that much, everyone around me was respectful and thankfully no assholes waited just to be a douche, although I did say some shit out loud during his rants, I feel I was "contributing" at those moments and never did I ruin the music for anyone else. Also, fuck line cutters, it's less bad when people are pushing through a crowd but is still meh but when you are waiting in a fucking line, especially that long, I have no problem getting their asses kicked out of the line.
We were in the pit line and really, really close and literally got fucked over because of the rush of people jumping the rail/cutting the line and causing problems. So squished up and right when we got to the pit we were told "Sorry, the pit is full". Then they proceeded to allow tons of VIP, RLAR, and other guests enter the pit while we watched. Then they didn't let people into the pit as others came out.
Really glad I waited for two sets on the side of the stage for nothing. They need a few people to organize that more. It's like the wild west and the usual guy who keeps shit in some kind of order was not there this year. So we had lines splitting in two and also people playing really loose with the definition of a "line". So lame.
I was probably 20 or so people behind you. Despite waiting over 3 and a half hours, I missed out on the pit because a few hundred or so people decided that their time was more valuable than mine. Otherwise, I had an incredible Bonnaroo. I'll get a GA ticket next time Kanye is in Philly, and shouldn't have to deal with the madness. The one thing I didn't understand about the Kanye pit line was the security. I saw a few shows over the weekend from the pit, including Elton, and every single one of them, except for Kanye, were run smoothly and efficiently. No rails, no security, and very little interest in overall safety. My GF nearly got murdered, and it was all for nothing. It's pretty ridiculous to offer pit service and not have ONE security guard make sure it runs smoothly. I understand a few cutters making their way into the back, but an army of screaming idiots smashing directly into the front of a line should preventable.
Oh, and that person defending cutters... you're genuinely awful.

I'm impressed that you managed to hit that many of the censored words in the course of a normal, cohesive paragraph.

Bolded is the point I think he was making you appear to have missed Cokes. It's more about him not caring about the value of his fans time. you know? the ones who paid to see him. Sure he doesn't care about money. But the people paying to see him likely often do.
As one of the people who actually has paid for Kanye, on multiple occasions now, I would say that there are strikingly few people who would say they paid specifically to see him who are disappointed.

and touche' to the use of the word 'specifically'. But even at Roo the headliners are a part of the purchase. Granted I would of bought the ticket regardless. But I wouldn't presume to say such is the case for everyone.
Also, who saw that kid whip out his schlong and piss himself in the pit?
Hell of a top of the page, if I do say so myself.

I was right in front of him and he pissed on my friends leg. This dude couldn't find a bottle before he got into the pit?
This was my first Roo and honestly Kanye West was the main reason why I decided to come. I'm a big Ye fan and this would be my second time seeing him live (the first time in February for Yeezus) so I waited I think 5 hours or more in the pit line and to me it was worth it. In terms of people cutting I didn't let that shit slide. These fucking group of guys tried to cut me and my friends in line and no one was about the fuck up my plans to see Ye up close. Honestly I NEED to be close being 4"11 and all. I didn't say anything but walked in front of them and reclaimed my spot. They didn't say shit cause they knew what they were doing was fucked up. (and one of the guys in the fuck boy group was the one that pissed in the pit) So I was pretty chill once they got behind me but did see a lot of people trying to cut and I constantly told these people that the pit line for Ye was way back and not at the end of the two-sided gate. Sadly fuck boys will be fuck boys so I'm sorry for anyone that couldn't get into the pit or didn't have a good spot because of it. I was able to get right behind someone in front of the rail so I was up close. Only reason why is some fuck boys started pushing and running into each other that I got thrown into the front. A couple of seconds of torture paid off so I was cool.
I was expecting a rant because it happened at multiple Yeezus concerts so it would be a given. Especially with the past history of Ye and Roo. I don't understand why some people are whining when they knew damn well that shit was going to happen. I liked his rant. Personally it made me feel inspired and good about myself. Something that I definitely needed in my life and all. No other artists I've listened to made me feel confident and that's why I'm such a huge fan of him. So when he said if you're a fan of me then you're a fan of yourself it really hit me. The inspirational part of his rant I loved it and if you're only focusing on the press and porter-pottie part of the rant then you weren't listening to everything he was saying. You were too busy trying to find something to bitch about instead of trying to find something positive to take home with you. This world is already shitty as it is, try to find something to make it better and stop focusing on the negatives.
Performance wise I loved it. Compared to his Yeezus concert, his Roo performance wasn't as good but I thought it was still fantastic. I was fine with him not doing a lot of Yeezus songs because I already seen it but I wished he did more MBDTF and 808 songs. He did perform my favorite song which was Can't Tell Me Nothing so I was hype as hell.
Overall I had a great experience. I don't regret waiting for hours in the pit line and I would relive it again if I could. I thought he did great performing and the only thing I would want differently is his song choice. I was to hyped on seeing him live and up front that I wasn't trying to analyze every single aspect of his set. Just sit back and enjoy the damn performance.
Can we just mark these people off as horrible, racist, ignorant, assholes and move on with it and talk about how great the lord and savior was on Friday?
Can we please stop making comments like this? We're talking about music, attitude and delivery of a performance. The vast majority of people on inforoo (including me) and across America actually, could give two shiz's about the color of a performers skin. Would you say the same of a black guy who openly voiced his criticism of Jack White's performance and/or music, a racist, ignorant asshole? No. All people, on all sides of any issue need to move beyond using skin color as a reason to ridicule, judge, demean.
I wasn't disappointed, I had 0 expectations from him, but went in with an open mind. Had a great time until the rant. I actually really liked the single huge red LED panel. I thought it looked epic.
He has clearly reached a point in his career where the money is secondary to the art and theater of it all.

Spoken like someone who isn't actually a Kanye West fan. If you were, you'd have not only expected a rant, you'd most likely be anticipating it. This is very, very simple. If people went there to boo, they're pieces of shit and I hope they fall down a well. If people went there to give it a shot and didn't like it? Fine, that is your right. But please do not start telling Kanye West fans what Kanye West thinks about them. The guy performs as hard as anyone, and that is not a biased, fanboy statement. Watch him perform a Yeezus set and tell me he's not giving a shit. He rants at those shows and you would be hard pressed to find a single fan that would bitch about his rants. If people paid attention to them, they'd find that they're very insightful and honest. They're not just the insane ramblings of a crazy person, despite the fact that everyone who dislikes the guy tries to paint them that way.
Can we just mark these people off as horrible, racist, ignorant, assholes and move on with it and talk about how great the lord and savior was on Friday?

This is incredibly naive. Can you take a step back for a moment and realize that a predominantly white, predominantly southern contingent of people are upset because they demanded some kind of apology from a black man before ordering him to "shut up and play your hits"? Because that's how this comes off to anyone not immediately involved in it. If you think race has nothing to do with why so many people dislike Kanye West, you're fooling yourself or trying to live in a fantasy world. The "majority of people across America" don't care about race? Do you have some kind of Oxford study to support this insane claim? Racism is rampant in this country, still, and if you are blind to that fact it's not someone else's fault for pointing it out to you.
If you don't see the difference between "I didn't really like Kanye West's set" and "KANYE WEST THINKS HE'S BIGGER THAN JESUS AND DISNEY AND FUCK YOU ASSHOLE JUST PLAY YOUR GOOD SONGS THAT I'M GOING TO SING ALONG WITH ANYWAY DESPITE BOOING AND MAKING GAY FISH JOKES AND BEING A DUMB SHITSTINKING FUCKBAG! HE HATES HIS FANS! HE HATES BONNAROO! HE HATES WHITE PEOPLE! HE HATES PUPPIES! (paraphrasing)" then you need to just stop making comments on this altogether. Acting like a black man simply disliking Jack White's set is akin to the insane, hypocritical and sometimes racially-charged comments about Kanye West is ridiculous.
It's pretty simple, actually. Kanye West is a powerful, unquestionably talented black male from a northern city and Bonnaroo patrons are white and mostly southern. One year I camped next to people who called the Civil fucking War the "War of Northern Aggression" and it wasn't in jest. There are Stars N' Bars on display. This is not an area brimming with racial tolerance and love for outspoken, brash, confident black males, especially ones who are reaching heights they'll never reach and have no qualms about speaking about that fact. This board isn't an accurate representation of the southern population in this regard, and there was recently a discussion on whether white assholes from Northern Florida can use the word "n*gga." And the actual south is more racist than that. I wasn't at Roo, I was just one of the lucky people who got to read Twitter and FB and see the insane, hateful, HATEFUL stuff lobbed at Kanye before he even uttered a word. It turned me off enough that I really question if I'd want to return to a festival that would allow that type of behavior (the booing/heckling, not the internet stuff that they can't control). I almost get the feeling that Roo set him up to fail, but he just refused to give them what they wanted. I've had multiple that were there confirm what the Pitchfork article stated about the sound differential, seems kinda shady to me.
Kanye West is a performer, someone who is a combination of actor and musician, and the best of his generation. He puts time and effort and millions of dollars into crafting his performances and it's to the point where his albums are almost soundtracks to the events that are his shows. Don't be surprised if you see Kanye West score a film, or write a musical in his lifetime. With his ever-evolving, otherworldly talents his potential in all likelihood hasn't been touched and it's truly disappointing and frankly just plain sad that people expend so much energy trying to knock him down. To actively hate someone who has never done something to you is just insane to me. He's not a rapist, a murderer, he's not a drug addict, he doesn't beat women, he doesn't beat his kids, he's just an egocentric megastar music artist who likes to talk about how great he is. Holy fucking shit what a monster. Kanye West is a brilliant human being, who also happens to be mildly insane. But, last I checked, all the brilliant people are. When you can tell me why we decided Kanye West is the only brilliant, tortured soul of his generation that we try to beat down constantly and prevent to succeed that isn't racial, I'll believe it's something else.
I'm going to go back to being a ghost around here, because this place makes me sad. But this thread is my baby and I couldn't let you people shit all over her like that.
I've been wanting to show this video but haven't had time until now to upload it. Brad took it from the top row of the bleachers during Black Skinhead. I personally have never seen a What Stage crowd as energized as this one in my four years attending Bonnaroo. Usually everyone in the bleachers sits for the entire performance. Well, not Kanye's. The bleachers were actually swaying, which was a little scary. I thoroughly enjoyed his set, one of my favorites of the weekend. We all knew he would go off on rants, so it was no surprise there. I can honestly say that I loved just about every minute of my first Kanye show.

The funniest thing to me is how many people who are complaining/hating on Facebook all mention how all they wanted to hear was Gold Digger. Like...that's part of the complaints is "He didn't play that one song that I like". I personally wanted some more older tunes but thought the setlist he gave was still pretty awesome. The Yeezus songs are always really powerful live.
I went in with an open mind. I listened to his albums. I tried to "get it", and I did!
That being said, I was very disappointed. I get what he was doing, his show, his preaching, his dreams and aspirations... but it all came off pithy and arrogant. If you wanna compare yourself to great people like Walt Disney or William Shakespeare, at the very least you should have something in common with them. Disney dreamed of a world where everyone could enjoy themselves and have a happy time. I have seen Disney's dream in film and in person at his parks. I didn't feel anything even close to the joy I have felt while watching a Disney movie or visiting his parks (or stores even). I didn't feel any level of emotion that I felt when reading Hamlet or R&J by Shakespeare. All I felt was alienated. If you need to believe that you are as good as the greatest people that have lived on earth to actually BE one of the greatest people on earth, that's fine. I get that. But to say it as a fact just makes you look like an ass. Not to mention him going on about Bonnaroo '08 and how it was everyone's fault but his own. He neglected to mention his attitude about it, the fact that he wasn't going to go on stage without his full setup (which wouldn't fit) and that he shortened his set significantly. And then he just asks where the press is? Also, lots of people lose family members every year. It's very sad. He could have not played at all, and it would have been entirely justified. The entire thing was very one sided. But that's just what I took from it.
I really wanted to enjoy the show. But after the "sermon", I was just happy to hear a song or two. Jesus Walks sounded good, but it was more of a relief than anything. I saw no "genius", I saw no "best rapper of all time". I saw a man who alienated himself from the very people who elevated him to the status he has. Yet you still stand and support him blindly, without question. Just saying that everyone else just "hates on him" or "doesn't show the "true Roo spirit" is garbage. More than 1/2 of the attendees didn't enjoy it or want him there. Believe it or not, that 1/2 were heavily enjoying the festival, and almost everyone I talked to disliked his show, his sermon, and his presence, and showed me all the positive vibes I could ever ask for aside from that. Being "true Roo", or however they are coining, does not mean hiding your feelings or rejecting a negative presence. It is emphasizing the positive and shunning the negative. Kanye was a negative experience for me. He didn't once thank the crowd for their support. And I hope he never returns.
If you wanted to hear a truly humble and grateful artist, take Lionel Richie for example. I was blown away not only by his humility, but also by how well spoken he was.
I talked to you all and talked about having an open mind going into this. I prepared myself, and this is my honest post experience reply. If you think I'm spewing hate, then you are simply blinded by this guy, and I don't understand it. I took it all in exactly as I experienced it, without prejudice, and without hate. I felt as though the people booing were actually justified when he said what he said. Again, I understand aspiring to greatness, but the people who were truly great, especially the ones he mentioned, did not get there stepping on those who supported him. If you don't believe me, read some famous quotes by Walt Disney about pursuing your dreams, and then go back and listen to the sermon Mr. West gave at Bonnaroo. Let the words speak for themselves.

Are you kidding me?!?!? The best part about his set was that he DIDN'T do Gold Digger, easily his worst song. So happy he didn't do it for this, the 2 Yeezus shows I saw, or Gov Ball last year. lol.

Please don't make this more hostile than it already is. Just understand that white people talking about a black man's "attitude" (as you put it) is generally going to rub a lot of people the wrong way.
Alright, i've just been reading a ton of your consistent back and forth. My experience was annoying. I really enjoy Kanye and really loved the set, but everyone around me was just fucking negative and it really killed it for me. I really really really want to hear a good audio recording so i can confirm to myself that this was an awesome set, and not feel the negative emotion when thinking about it. I am so happy to hear from you all that it was wayyy better than my experience. It was just annoying listening to people yell and say shut up, and like someone said the sound from where i was, was a little rough which killed my entire groups mood.
I was expecting the rants and loved it. But because of everyone else's negative attitude i feel i came out of this concert kind of confused as to whether i ACTUALLY enjoyed it, or it was just shitty and my love for Kanye made me not want to say it was bad.
Again happy to see from other positions it seemed like this show was absolutely insane. I just wish i was around those areas to enjoy it more.
If i had one complaint about his performance (not about the crowd) it would be that the side screens weren't on. but that is so minor that i feel again, if i was in a better spot in the crowd, i would have not mind at all.
Now you can all continue to argue, tooth and nail, as to whether it was the greatest redemption show or a complete shit show based solely on what you experienced.... then argue that your opinion is the more correct opinion. I'm loving all the back and forth.
