Spoken like someone who isn't actually a Kanye West fan. If you were, you'd have not only expected a rant, you'd most likely be anticipating it. This is very, very simple. If people went there to boo, they're pieces of shit and I hope they fall down a well. If people went there to give it a shot and didn't like it? Fine, that is your right. But please do not start telling Kanye West fans what Kanye West thinks about them. The guy performs as hard as anyone, and that is not a biased, fanboy statement. Watch him perform a Yeezus set and tell me he's not giving a shit. He rants at those shows and you would be hard pressed to find a single fan that would bitch about his rants. If people paid attention to them, they'd find that they're very insightful and honest. They're not just the insane ramblings of a crazy person, despite the fact that everyone who dislikes the guy tries to paint them that way.
I said the point "he was trying to make" Flanz, merely pointing out that I thought cokes was misinterpreting it. I've already said I was there to neither boo nor heckle, and was actually around none of it. I just think the extended rants make the set disjointed. It took me out of it. I was all in up until the first one. Fine, no biggie. But by the second and third, it was just wearing my energy for the show down. Stated above I hadn't caught the Yeezus show as well, my first time seeing him. Sue me. And I still think there was zero reason to still be spitting excuses for 2008. I felt all that was pointless. But I think I've come to the conclusion that was for you all...the die-hards. He was spitting venom back at the crowd for you. And apparently you loved it. And he in turn fed off of that. You justified it for him. And maybe I just found it tedious because I kinda found myself in the middle at this show. I wasn't angry at Kanye, but I wasn't angry at the crowd either. I just wanted to see a good show. As for his rants being insightful and honest? What i love the most about Kanye's music are his insightful and unabashedly honest lyrics....even when he's directing it at himself. Correction:especially when it's directed at himself. It's when he's at his most human. It's an insight into the self-loathing we all have at least a taste of. In his lyrics he criticizes himself as much as anybody one second, and boasts the next. But jesus man those damn rants get long....especially considering the time constraints of a festival setting. Again...I just felt like it detracted from the show. And I feel like his lyrics say most of it well enough he doesn't have to keep yelling it at me too. Just my $.02 I guess. And when I got tired of it I didn't boo...I just left early for a good spot at Cube. Hell, I also already said I'll probably give him another shot when he's on his on,theres no crazy backstory, and he's got all damn night to rant if he wants and still play a full setlist and not blow my schedule of shows for the night doing it.
As for what makes me sad about this thread? The fact that as someone who didn't like the show, me and others have been generalized as everything from a stupid, rascist, dipshit douchebag to just an outright moron for not knowing the full details of a Yeezus show despite the fact I've never seen one. The harsh judgement in this thread is cutting both ways gentlemen. You all cry foul and then dish it right back. But that seems to be just following Kanye's example IMO.
Sidenote: I ain't even mad at Kanye no more, I got Outkast tickets. Now he's nothing more than one dissappointing set in an otherwise great weekend. Before, I admit, I was slightly bitter because I knew we would've had them if it hadn't of been Kanye. Now problem solved.

"SilentEyedStorm and heybulldog like this."
What a bunch of ignorant racists, right??!?
Sorry you had the experience of spotting some good ol' boys down on the farm, but I'd say your statements are pretty gross generalizations, and you are not the sociology expert you think you are. I am from the north (a very racially diverse part of Cleveland, in fact), and I work with and have friends and neighbors that do not share my race, so what you are saying hardly applies to me.
Here's my thing: I guess I am just way too old to be impressed by bullshit. That is why a Kanye rant about his self-perceived godlike transcendence was grating and obnoxious to me- not whatever racially charged subconscious neurosis you are trying to pin on thousands of people. In fact, I was getting a little irritated with Jack White's borderline pandering. If this is what headliners consider an entertaining performance, I guess I should skip them from now on.

Guilty conscience? Never said anything about race. You and SES are just two of the most vocal detractors, and two of the obnoxious people who decided to come to a Kanye thread to do nothing but shit on the performance. I was using your liking of a comment posted by a "Kanye West fan" to display how poorly a crafted argument/defense it was.
That's not to say your commentary on race and racism and "gross generalizations" isn't completely fucking batty, because it is. But you kind confirmed that with your superiority complex here, so no need to belabor the point.

Review your comments from before. You essentially stated that anyone who was criticizing his performance was doing so due to a racial subtext. You (and a few others before) started the commentary on race. I was simply responding to it. Perhaps I am delusional, but I don't quite understand who I feel superior to with this complex of mine... Kanye??
I am glad that some of you got your money's worth and had an excellent time, but since this is allegedly a place to discuss Bonnaroo acts in an open forum, I thought it would be acceptable to express my disappointment with the show. Guess I learned my lesson!

My argument has never been "anyone who was criticizing his performance was doing so due to a racial subtext." In fact, I specifically stated in my original post on the subject there is a vast difference between being critical and being hateful, hypocritical, and so on. Feel free not to misrepresent my position to fit your narrative. I have not insinuated you are racist, but this white guilt thing you've got hovering over these posts is making things awkward.
The commentary on race makes its way into this discussion because of the outrageously hypocritical stances on Kanye vs. Jack White. Until you can prove what that bias stems from that isn't racially motivated, that will continue to be the discussion. That's not my doing, so stop directing your complaints about that towards me.
Again, it is not Kanye West's fault that you went to a Kanye West concert and didn't anticipate or expect him to give you an A+ Kanye West rant. I'm not sorry that it turned you off, I'm sorry that you couldn't bother to actually listen to them and realize that what Kanye says is 100% accurate. And this is spoken as someone whose first ever vinyl was Are You Experienced? and someone who can recite any Beatles song verbatim by memory. John Lennon was a hypocrite who preached peace in one breath while beating his wife in the next. Jimi Hendrix was a raging drug addict. Kanye West is neither, he's just an egotistical musical savant who has self-important internet experts debating their biased and misinformed opinions about him. People acting offended that Kanye West dared to put his name in the same sentence as a bunch of "geniuses of their time" is proof positive that there is a ridiculous bias against him. Guess what? He is a genius. Musicians that you adore want to work with him, people want to be a part of whatever he's got his hand in.
You didn't like his rants because you don't like Kanye. You like Young Kanye, who was 27 when College Dropout came out and has a world of perspective between that version and today's. Sorry he didn't just come out, shut up and play his early hits, but that's not who Kanye is anymore. He's not a simply a musician who plays his music and that's it, he's a performer. You don't like it? Fine. Stop trying to convince people who did like it how shitty it was, it's childish and simply makes you look like a fool when you act this pretentious.
Did Jack White call himself the greatest rock star on planet earth? Did Jack White spew venom at patrons of Bonnaroo? I found Jack's rants to be overwhelmingly positive.

I'm sure he sent a few emails about it. Keep an eye out on TMZ for that.

People who were annoyed at him calling himself the biggest rock star on the planet......who would you say actually is the biggest rock star on the planet currently?

Not being able to handle dissenting opinions without resorting to personal insults and character judgments is also quite childish. And as I have said before, I don't love or hate Kanye, I've never said that John Lennon was a saint, I was just expressing my personal distaste for one particular live performance that I felt was a complete and utter waste of my time. I didn't realize I had to do preliminary research on the format of his show- typically that is not a requirement for live artists that I go to see.
There are plenty of people on this forum that are consistently smug, sarcastic, condescending, and downright nasty at times to strangers they perceive to be less intelligent or enlightened than them. That is pretentiousness.
When did he spew venom at the patrons? All I heard was him telling us to believe in ourselves, and to reach for our dreams.
Real asshole.
He definitely said a lot if positive things, and I never said he didn't. But he also came up there lacking any semblance of humility, took shots at Bruno Mars (stop wasting my time), and rambled about a bunch of people who weren't even there in 2014.
Like I said before, the rants were boring and a waste to me. But I still think his show was worth putting up with the rants. To some extent I felt the same about Jack White...but I'm just not seeing how people are comparing Jack White's rant to Kanye's. Jack didn't say a single negative thing from my memory.
I left Jack White due to it being absolutely horrid, but I'm not going to spend my time in the Jack White thread trying to convince people they shouldn't have enjoyed it.

I'm not saying he is or isn't. I just find that type of arrogance and narcissim during a show unappealing. I find it unappealing in general.

They were very positive, Jimmyroo. Just a little corny and saccharin at times. I did not mean that I disliked his show overall. He was far less irritating than Kanye, and he played a rocking setlist.

Not the "BIGGEST" thing again. That joke is worn out.

Neither would I. Run along now.
Funny you take a post and assume it's directed only toward you.
Man, I'm not trying to tell people the Kanye show was bad. I already said I was happy with his set list and was enjoying the show until the derps around me started chanting dumbass shit. I'm just defending Jack White whose rants I think are being unjustifiably compared to Kanye's.
