Coast Contra got me feeling things I haven’t felt since Kendrick came out. Kids aren’t rapping like this. Sorry if it was already posted and I missed it.

what are the big "level ups" in the history of hip-hop production? basically a song or act that created some brand new shit, or at least some brand new shit that broke through into the popular consciousness.
i think "nothing but a g thang" obviously. definitely the Earthtone III/Outkast crew, I'm thinking "Ms. Jackson" might embody that.

Kanye with both College Dropout and then again with 808s & Heartbreak

mannie fresh/cash money for sure as well. not as important as Outkast maybe, but I remember the first time I heard "Ha" it was some hot new shit. and obviously back that azz up. it's a simple beat but a precise and intelligent combination of miami bass/new orleans bounce, and that subtle synth keeps the whole thing tied together.

J Dilla and Madlib. Whether that's the Jaylib collab, Madlib's Blue Note album, Madvillainy, or Dilla's Donuts that was the most influential idk. I'm not a big jazz guy but I've heard that a lot of modern jazz has been influenced by that stuff too.

Some that stick out for me:
The Message - Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (song - first iteration of "conscious rap")
Criminal Minded - Boogie Down Productions (album - early gangsta rap)
License to Ill - Beastie Boys (album - punk/rock rap)
Alwayz into Somethin' - NWA (song - first iteration of g-funk)
The Low End Theory - A Tribe Called Quest (album - jazz rap)
Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde - The Pharcyde (album - west coast alternative rap)
any early album with the Soulquarians (Roots - Things Fall Apart, D'Angelo - Voodoo, Erykah Badu - Mama's Gun, Common - Like Water for Chocolate)
Donuts - J Dilla (IFYKYK)
To Pimp A Butterfly - Kendrick Lamar (accumulation and expansion of everything previously mentioned)
Wow if Posty joins the peppas the set will be good. Maybe since JOhn FRusciante is back I haven't seen them with john frusicante so i'm looking forward to it.

and then again on Yeezus New Slaves and Black Skinhead SNL debuts were insane
but I'd argue drop out was more in scene with stuff like just blaze, and continuation of production that Kanye was doing for other people like Jay talib and Cam
kanye definitely leveled up production more than any other single artist.
good call on chief keef, i don't think you get emo rap and subsequently the contemporary hip-hop sound without the culture first plunging into the darkness of drill music.
