Who just got permission to book a flight up to CT in July? This lady. Who was surprised with a ticket to NFF? This lady.
After an extremely shitty week, knowing that I will finally be a member of Quack Club 2014 has lifted my spirits more than just about anything else could. Words cannot express the feelings I've been feeling for the past 18 hours or so. Levon & Garth, make room on the couch for me!!
OH MY LORDY THIS MAKES ME SOOOOOOOOO HAPPY!!!!!!!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
(but be warned, I'll be fighting you for puppy lovin' attention)
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

Great news. Will be nice to see you again this summer.
I'm giving Rabbit Fur Coat another listen right now and I'll have to decide whether or not I like it more than Rilo Kiley. But Rilo Kiley has withstood the test of time a little bit more for me as I still find myself listening to them. If you find the Fuse broadcast of Rilo Kiley's Bonnaroo performance, you will see me singing along front and center.
I love the Rabbit Fur Coat and Acid Tongue albums. I never really got into Rilo Kiley much. I do love it when Jenny does Silver Lining in her solo act.
We are so glad that Hurray for the Riff Raff will be returning to the Festival this summer. Their new album "Small Town Heroes" comes out tomorrow- if you haven't pre-ordered it yet, you should definitely do so on their website. You can also stream it at NPR First Listen today. Congrats on your continued success, HFTRR- we're counting down the days until summer.
There is no festival on the planet better at building excitement and then dashing it away via the slow-release lineup, than Newport Folk. Mavis Staples? Awesome, cool booking. Houndmouth? Lazy, retread, they were there last year. Jenny Lewis? Awesome, cool booking. Hurray for the Riff Raff? Lazy, retread, they were there last year.
Well I wasn't there last year and I would like to see both Houndmouth and Hooray for the Riff Raff

I was there last year and didn't see either one, even though I would like to see both depending on this year's schedule!

I think it's more a function of the slow roll out than anything else. I actually don't mind repeat acts, because sometimes an act has gotten bigger/released new music, or otherwise you didn't get a chance to catch them previous year so it's nice regardless. I think if they released all the names at once on a big poster, I wouldn't blink an eye, but when you get one name per day and it's something that was on the lineup last year, there's less excitement.
I would be annoyed if every fest did it, but I kind of like it with Newport. Gives me plenty of time to explore the acts as they get announced. At the end of the day everyone knows what kind of lineup Newport is going to book. They always have lots of repeats and similar types of bands. If you get your hopes up expecting something else you are bound to wind up disappointed, but if you know what to expect it is a great lineup every year. They have announced 4 acts so far and I would like to see all four of them
I think the slow release works fine for people that know they're going to go regardless. There's such a flood of festivals on the east coast during that time that I want to see the whole damn thing before I commit. I can stay in Philly and go to XPoNential instead and see many of the same bands that are at Newport that same weekend. Obviously NFF are doing just fine with ticket sales and they could care less what I think.
My only complaint is that this is looking more like Lilith Fair. 4 acts announced and all 4 of them have a female lead singer (well, the female in Houndmouth doesn't always take lead).
All jokes aside, I can see a legitimate complaint being made for Houndmouth as they have not released an album since their performance last year nor have they gotten any more populat. However, I really enjoy their music so I am personally happy I'll get another chance to see them. I streamed Hurray's new album on NPR and really enjoyed it, so I'll definitely check them out if they don't overlap with any must-sees.
Rolling lineup is fine by me, except I really wish we could get a band every day. At the very least, I wish Newport was consistent with and let us know which days acts would be announced. Nothing like refreshing their page on a Friday to find out no band will be announced until the following Monday.
Okay. Now this is starting to get annoying. 5 bands announced, 3 are repeats from last year. I thought the slow roll out was to get us listening to and exploring new bands? But those of us who already bought tickets without any sort of lineup likely went last year and either saw these acts or know about them.
Does Shovels and Rope at least have new material to merit another invitation?

Happy but ready for new acts.
That said, I still kind of expect Felice Brothers since they've got a new album on the way. Upgrade them to the main stage.
Really interested to see who they get as headliners. I can't see the Avetts returning so soon. Would absolutely love a Monsters of Folk headliner set but not expecting it.
Decemberists, Jack White, John Fogerty, Fleet Foxes, Willie Nelson are some of my guesses for headliners.
Neutral Milk Hotel, Band of Horses, Alabama Shakes, Ray LaMontagne, Passenger, Nickel Creek, Alison Krauss, and Violent Femmes are some of my guesses for subheadliners.

I also think they are announcing all returning artists first and then digging into newer artists and then slowly announce "bigger" artists. I also bet they can't announce a lot of shows until the radius clause expires on some of these band's New England dates. There is a LONG way to go, so I'm saving judgement until the meat of the line-up has come to light.

This was posted on their website a month ago. Doesn't mention an album release specifically, but it looks like there will be new material:
Happy New Year! We’ll be holed up for the next month or so working on a new record and practicing our Spanish. Wish us luck. New tour dates have been posted for Feb, March and April. Excited to have our buddies Hurray For the Riff Raff in tow!

Fleet Foxes aren't playing shows anymore, really.
They're releasing a new album this summer but aren't going to tour on it?

Well they've already announced more returning acts this year than there were on the entire lineup last year. Outside of that, I now agree with the previous poster who said the repeat acts are a buzz kill when releasing the lineup this way.
I think you're right with the Mon - Tues - Thurs release, but they've also previously said to expect 3-4 acts per week. So I assume we may get an act on Wednesday or Friday as well some weeks.

Please point me to the release date for this new record.
"There's no official word on a third Fleet Foxes album, but the indie folk band has been dropping visual hints on its Facebook page about a return to the studio. When it arrives, the new album will be the Foxes' first without percussionist J. Tillman, who left to launch his solo career as Father John Misty."
For the record, they've been dropping these "hints" for over a year. They might pop up this year, but as a guess for a headliner at NFF, I think they're an extreme longshot.
Okay, I jumped the gun on a release date. But at this point last year, we had no idea Beck was working on a new album or was touring late July.
If Osheaga and Lollapalooza announce their lineups and Fleet Foxes are not on either of them, then I'll give up hope that they're planning on touring on a new album by late summer.
I would love to see Tweedy. Wilco would work too, although Tweedy said in an interview early 2013 that a new Wilco album would sound more "f*cked up" than previous albums. Might not be right for a folk festival (if there is indeed any new material; I'm going to watch my wording this time around).
Conor Oberst also makes for another possible subheadliner (although, he just played two years ago) given that he's been popping up on festival lineups and is working on a country-tinged album in Nashville.

Just announced some tour dates and he's in NYC on July 29th....so he'll be up in the East Coast area around the time of the festival anyway. I'd say that makes him a little more possible/likely.
