Congrats to those of you who bought LOA VIP. They sent out an email last week stating that Jacques Leonardi would be offering some of the dishes from his restaurant, Jacques Imo's, for the LOA creditialed guests. The email noted Shrimp and Alligator Sausage Cheesecake (which is beyond reproach), Shrimp and Grits, Chicken and Tasso, Cheese Grits, Slow Roasted Duck Po-boy etc. for discounted pricing. That is the funkiest and one of the most "New Orleans" restaurants in the city even if Jacques is a transplant from NY State. It's always tough to get in that restaurant, but you can drink in the street outside while you wait 2+ hours. And it's been that way for years.
Update for Foo Fighters fans - Dave Grohl did an interview segment on Late Night with David Letterman last night, and then covered Black Sabbath's War Pigs with Zac Brown. It's a pretty jamming cover if you haven't seen it yet.
Foo Fighters are doing cover songs all week with special guests, but none of the songs are scheduled for their Sonic Highway album coming out next month. It's just them having fun. Apparently they have released a new, extended trailer about the album project. Here's the story from nola.com with the video at the end. I haven't watched it yet (edit - a little bit of NSFW language). Their HBO mini-series about the recording of Sonic Highways, kicks off this Friday night on HBO. Here's the link to the extended trailer.

I came when I saw that e-mail. I will be purchasing 2 slices of that "cheesecake" everyday. I haven't had any in like 3 years.
I had no idea I would even like that when I first tried it a few years ago. Savory cheesecake seemed funky. But that dish is pretty much creamy deliciousness even for someone like me who finds that many cheeses taste like raw stomach acid.
I talked with Jabco, and I think we'll be joining you guys next year for LOA. Stage positioning is also key there even though you don't have to work for the 2 small stages. Also, I'm thinking that even though Foo Fighters are headliners and are giant in NOLA, that well may be the sleeper set of the festival. I was going to try to sneak away for about 10-15 minutes mid-set to catch a little of Pretty Lights, but that's up in the air. I last saw them at DeLuna Fest in 2012, and while I had Pearl Jam's set that year as my top show of 2012, it was right there. Both my oldest 2 who were with us gave it their top show of 2012. I'm not a hater on any typical festival genre, but it's great that Voodoo continues to throw a decent bone out to fans who still like to rock. I think it was Postjack who said on lineup announcement day that Slayer and Melvins were also crucial to him. Along with Foo Fighters that's as good as any other non totally rock themed fest. So even if Rise Against, Fuel, 30 Seconds, Bo Ningen, etc. end up sucking, and they won't all suck, there will be some opportunities to crank it.
So Voodoo sent out the 2 week notice. There is a link to the vendors which we discussed a couple weeks ago, and a note about the Krewe of Boo which is a local Halloween parade that runs through the FQ on Thursday night. I haven't seen it in a few years, but they always had cool throws (rubber eybealls, skeletons and such). That's Thursday night 6pm-ish (30th), so if you get into town early enough, you might want to check it out. Costume ball to follow with Destructo and Big Sam's Funky Nation. www.kreweofboo.com/
Also, Joy Theatre has announced Gravity A and Yojimbo (with Carly "Hates the Dubstep" from Mike Dillon Band) on November 1. That's probably going to be a great show, but there won't be many people there because of all the other stuff going on around town (Monsters of Funk, other shows, passed out people, etc.).
We went and saw Pretty Lights Music with all his jam buddies last night. They did a bunch of DJ/Drum Pad improv as well as some Pretty Lights music, a remix of Yellow Birds and other individual and group stuff. They were paryting like rockstars, but I had to drive. It was a cool and different show. Derek was filming most of the show and did come up on stage to DJ a bit and hit the drum pads. Like only 100 people with a low douche factor.
They need to post the fucking map already. Really curious if they make changes based on our complaints from last year regarding stage location and sound bleed from le plur. The map that is on the app currently only shows the entrance and boundaries of the fest which look the same as last year.
Thanks for the heads up on that. Bo Ningen off sucks for me as that was a sleeper metal show. I will probably replace that with Lindsey Lowend which means a little more edm than I planned on Sunday. I'll have to miss Quintron for obvious reasons. Marchfourth moving to 3 on Saturday gives me an opportunity to see Probably most of their set but opens a hole on Saturday at 6 for me. Hopefully they will update the app soon so I can screw with this.
Damn, I'm bummed about the Quintron change and the Bo Ningen dropoff. They were clearly going to kick f'n ass.
Also saw this in the email:
"Voodoo is excited to announce that for the first time free water will be available to all Voodoo Experience goers, courtesy of MiO Liquid Water Enhancer! There will be 2 water stations located on the festival grounds where fans can refresh with a cup of water or refill their reusable bottles. And be sure to make your water original by trying an assortment of MiO flavors that will be available as you refill and rehydrate!"
I'm really happy to hear this because the lack of water pisses me off to no end. Especially when you are going to focus half the damn fest on n00bert bathsalt boofers. This also means I'll get to continually pocket packs of their Mio flavor goo: "it's what plants crave!" to use after the fest.
FYI, you can always get free soft drinks, water bottles, and usually red bulls in the Marlboro Cancer Experience area. The only bummer about this is I'm sure I'm on like a ton of lists as a smoker, even though I've never been one. This will prob affect health insurance one day. Ah.
I'm trying to decide if it's wise/realistic to try to do Trombone Shorty > Gogol Bordello > Foo Fighters on Sunday. Something tells me I'll have to miss Gogol Bordello. I really think they would've been an awesome LN show somewhere. It's almost unfortunate they're on the festival lineup instead
It takes literally 2 minutes to walk from Ritual to Carnival if it's set up like last year. Trombone Shorty plays nola all the time...leave his set at 5:25 and catch all of Gogol Bordello in a good spot within 15 feet of the stage because people don't post up at Carnival all day like they do on Le Plur and Ritual.
Yeah, Sunday afternoon is tough. I'm gonna try to catch 5 mins of shorty on the way to Griz which should be killer but ultra packed. Then I'm gonna catch some of Golgo Bordello on the way to Foo Fighters.
Lmfao at Marlboro Cancer Exp. They need to bring back American Spirit. Multiple daily packs of their super premium blends they don't sell in stores for a buck each was great. I can't affords to smoke those every day. Well I could but you know... 9/pack level is outrageous
So that makes 2x festivals (the other being FunFunFun) that I am coming from Australia to attend that have had Nostalghia just quietly disappear from the lineup.
Plenty others to see and I bought tix to both lineup unseen, but being as Nostalghia are genuinely one of my favourite bands, I'll allow myself a one-off, two word whine: That sucks.
Morning 40 Federation is playing DBA on Halloween. That'll probably be a pretty wild show. I still haven't seen them live
I've never seen them either but have seen various members in other bands.
I'm sure by now everyone has seen the debut on Friday's letterman of the first song off the new Foo Fighters album. It's called something for nothing which is obviously their Chicago song. It's nothing great, but it still jams. It gets better throughout the song which is pretty cool. It's out there on YouTube or via voodoo's facebook page. 2 weeks til the FF. I'm pretty excited and feel privileged to see them right now. Their 2015 tour in support of Sonic Highways should be one of the most ambitious tours of the year with likely festival stops. I'm betting they kick fucking ass in 2 weeks. I'm still bugging they didn't put Zedd against them instead of Pretty Lights :mad2:
I'm officially counting on a Foo Fighters club show on Halloween night. They'll probably air the New Orleans episode that Friday and they'll already be in the area for Voodoo.

NO episode is Nov 21st
Ballz. I guess I should've done just the bare minimum amount of research
Speaking of wild speculation, Randy was saying today that he was talking to Adam Deitch at the Break Science show 2 weeks ago and apparently he told him Pretty Lighte was a band set or more specifically that it would be special. Whether this means a full band set, various guests and jams or whatever, I don't know. If it turns out to be true, fuck salt
If so I'll def hit it up in the middle of Foo Fighters set for a lil while. I kinda regret not going to the PL liveband Jazzfest set at Champions Square this year.
Are you going to Gleason Gras tmrw at Champions Square? Longinus and I are going to check out The Ders before the of Montreal show at the Howlin' Wolf.
The Champions Square set was awesome. I was surprised there weren't more people at that. It should have been overfilled (capacity I think is around 7,500), but there were maybe 1000-1250 people there. We walked right up to the 10th row. That was a great day with Phish at Jazzfest, Pretty Lights full band set at Champions Square and then Big G at The Joy. I was almost to the point of saying I was just going to skip it altogether in order to not miss any FF. But if it is a band set or Derek and friends or something I'm probably going to have to go ahead and hit 10-15 minutes mid-FF set.
As for tomorrow, I'm not sure. I have to put the fun in funeral, and it's not going to be a particularly fun one. We went last year for Galactic w/ Corey Henry and had a blast. I'll probably make a decision tomorrow after the burial and repast (sp?). I had been planning on going. One of my kids is hitting up Something Wicked in Houston this weekend (2 day EDM show with Bassnectar, Kaskade, Dillon Francis, Martin Garrix, A-Track, etc.). Another is working. And I'm not sure about the 3rd one. If I end up deciding to go, I'll PM the cell #.
For their info, there's an assload of decent vegetarian places as well as vegan if you know where to look. Also, any decent chef in the city would cook anyone a vegetarian and/or vegan meal if they ask the server. That's the unwritten rule of 3,4,5 star places. You just have to ask (or call ahead and make sure they can accomodate).
Some friends and I planned a last minute a trip to New Orleans for Halloween weekend. None of them are really interested in going to Voodoo, but I'd like to go for Outkast on Friday. So my question for any locals/veterans is how easy is it to score a cheaper one day pass outside the gates on the day of the show? If that's not an option, do they have a box office that will sell day passes on site?

You can buy one online now to be safe for:
That's pretty much what you're going to pay at the gate too. Now you would definitely be able to score a cheaper 3 day pass outside the gate, but single day resales are typically harder to come by. Keep a check on craigslist and such though because you never know.

and even if you can only go for the evening, Slayer > Melvins > Outkast is so worth the $100.
How were the shows yesterday? I ended up hanging with my cousins all day, so I didn't get out.
As for Voodoo, apparently they have taken steps to a address the sound bleed from last year. No telling if it's gonna work since both small stages are now also on the northern perimeter of the fest. But they moved the edm stage to the NW corner, one of the small stages in the north central and one in the NE corner. Ritual Stage stays where it was. New Map in link below.
Some more night shows are out there. Halloween night, Gravity A is doing their annual Blue Nile Halloween show at 1am. That's always a blast, but you couldn't get near the place last year. They are also playing Sat Night with Yojimbo at the Joy as previously mentioned.
Tauk (!!!) is doing a 2am show on Saturday Night (Sunday am) at Blue Nile. As soon as I saw they were playing, I immediately figured I would be going to that. But 2am Voodoo is much, much harder for me than 2am Jazzfest. So it's between doubtful and maybe. I'll see them twice at Bear Creek so it isn't imperative that I have to go. I hate to ever miss that talent level coming through town, and I would have been willing to jump this over Gravity A or Monsters of Funk. But it's just something I'm going to have to play by ear.
Mannie Fresh and Rebirth are playing The Maison on Frenchman on November 1.
Ookay with Kthulu Prime are at The Willow on Saturday night for the electronica people.

I think it looks like a great layout. The key is to push that Le Plur stage as far back as possible, the bass from there just rolled across the whole grounds last year. Even if the Carnival stage is kind of where the Le Plur stage was last year, I doubt the music will be loud enough there to bleed heavily into the main stage.
So stoked that the EDM stage is far away from everthing else. I'm sure Skrilldawg will still be womping over Benjamin Booker though. Ah well.
Really excited about Voodoo! It's almost here. Saints beat the Packers at home and are gonna beat the Panthers this Thursday. Gonna be hi5s and smilin' faces in NOLA all weekend.
