So stoked that the EDM stage is far away from everthing else. I'm sure Skrilldawg will still be womping over Benjamin Booker though. Ah well.
Really excited about Voodoo! It's almost here. Saints beat the Packers at home and are gonna beat the Panthers this Thursday. Gonna be hi5s and smilin' faces in NOLA all weekend.
With the angle of Le plur it will be interesting to see if that is the case. Last year Le plur was firing directly at loa / carnival. Will definitely be some residual bass but if you are close enough to the stage it might not be too bad.
Postjack- Yea, I went up to the very front right of Dr. John's set last year and avoided most of Assnectar's womp, but in between songs it was overwhelming. It was so bad everyone on stage was just looking at each other like "you can't be fucking serious. Sch'mon." I remember in particular seein' Mac just kinda look disgusted for a second before going into another song.
I hope to see a return of the bootleg tshirt mangs this year. Longinus and I searched for them last year but couldn't find them. We figured it was because of the new location and it bein' harder to sling illicit merch.
Bootleg Voodoo shirts are always better. $10, full color artwork on the front, band logos etc on the back w/ lineup instead of the official $30-40 shirts with some plainjane logo on the front and a wall of text on the back.
It's looking like Morning 40 Federation on Friday and Monsters of Funk on Saturday for my late night schedule. I'll be dressed as Waldo so keep an eye out for me at the festival and after-shows

Friday I'll be Murderpope and Saturday I'll be Billy Gibbons. Holla!
Foo Fighters were on 60 minutes last night with Anderson Cooper. It's about a 12 minute segment which has clips of them playing in Preservation Hall as well as marching along with a Sunday afternoon Second Line. The link below is the script (and I think link to video) of the segment. It's clear that Dave loves New Orleans (they mention it's the one city they're really looking forward to coming back to).
The New Orleans song is called "In the Clear" and is about the lingering effects of Hurricane Katrina and the history of jazz. My favorite part:
Foo Fighters will be returning to each of the eight cities where they recorded "Sonic Highways," but Grohl is looking forward to one city in particular.
Dave Grohl: That week we had in New Orleans totally changed my life.
Anderson Cooper: How so?
Dave Grohl: It made me fall head over heels in love with music all over again.
One of his favorite memories from that week in New Orleans was when Foo Fighters gave that surprise show in the French quarter. After playing on their own, they were joined by the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
Trombone Shorty showed up late and had to borrow an old horn, but the sound was pure New Orleans.
Rock drummer Taylor Hawkins had help from jazz drummer Joe Lastie Jr., who comes from a long line of local musicians and told us he always dreamed of being a rock star.
His wish came true that night.
Grohl called it a "musical gumbo," a beautiful blend of sounds and styles. A true celebration of what American music is all about.
I'm going to be loving some Foo Fighters back this weekend!
Dave Grohl: It made me fall head over heels in love with music all over again.
New Orleans always has that effect on me. I have no idea why.
I begin every festival season with the sunshine and warm temperatures at Jazzfest, and end every festival season with the darkness and cold of Voodoo. Sounds grandiose but music begins and ends in New Orleans for me.
also bonnaroo is the ham in that sandwich. which i guess makes hangout the cheese. and phish shows the mayonaise.
I think a lot of people from here (and people like you who understand and are de facto citizens) embrace the music. I go out so often to shows where the bands just have a tip jar out. I'll throw them a $10 or buy them a round or whatever, and they super appreciate that. Some people take it for granted, but I appreciate the opportunity to watch someone play. Being in/from New Orleans, I tend to miss the music most when I'm away. It's one of those deep connections to the city where the sounds of brass or a snaredrum or guitar always seems to be in the background of your day. It's going to be a great weekend. I just hope we have a 60% factor of the great weather we've had the last 2+ weeks. October sunshine and 80 degree days don't last forever. But maybe we'll be lucky and not have any ridiculous rainfall or bone-chilling cold (Circa 2011 Soundgarden).
Edit: So far so good. 5-7 days is a roll of the dice, but looks like mild days, cool nights. From NWS:
Friday Sunny, with a high near 74. Friday Night Mostly clear, with a low around 56. Saturday Sunny, with a high near 72. Saturday Night Mostly clear, with a low around 56. Sunday Sunny, with a high near 74. Sunday Night Partly Cloudy, with a low around 62
Weather is looking pretty damn good for this weekend! 50% chance of heavy rain on Wednesday, hopefully not too much mudding things up at City Park, at least Thursday will get some sunshine to dry it up if so.
No rain during fest, def gonna get chilly so def bring a longsleeve or jacket with you. or just get really drunk. Your choice.
Thur-0% rain High 74, Low 55 Fri- 0% rain High 77, Low 54 Sat- 0% rain High 65, Low 50 Sun- 0% rain High 73, Low 61
Wednesday my organization is doing a fundraiser at Barrel Proof from 5-7. 20% goes to our schools. Thursday night I'll probably be at Markey's to watch the Saints game. I STRONGLY suggest anyone who is new the city come check it out. It is absolutely the best little known bar in the city. A disgusting amount of TVs, good food, cheap drinks, friendly staff, darts, and a FULL SIZED shuffleboard table!
EDIT: I'm a little biased because it's 3 houses away from my front door...

Headed down to New Orleans tomorrow afternoon. I've never been, staying at a friends condo in the French Quarter. None of my friends get in until late Thursday night, so was wondering what I need to check out (food, sights, whatever cool shit). Really excited to get to NO and especially for Voodoo!! Any tips would be greatly appreciated! (Sorry if this has been covered earlier in the thread)

Easy FQ stuff:
Head to Johnny's Po Boys for lunch Cafe Du Monde - touristy but for a reason. delicious beignets. open 24 hours so go whenever. Night time stuff - walk down Bourbon if you want just for the experience, but head to Frenchmen to hang out, walk into any bar that has dope brass music.
Wednesday my organization is doing a fundraiser at Barrel Proof...
You been here yet since it's changed over from Bridge Lounge? Supposedly Black Label BBQ is cooking out of there as well, which is apparently the only Texas-style BBQ in the city. I've been dying to go and haven't heard anyone that's tried it out yet.
Yes, Frenchmen Street is where the action will be this weekend after Voodoo. Lots of after shows going down and every Halloween there are tons of n20 tanks goin' off openly due to leos bein' paid off or who knows what (if you're into that.)
The Blue Nile on Frenchmen has a balcony right next to where all this goes down and is endless entertainment watching people huffing gas and fishing out onto the ground etc
In mid-city the Parkway Bakery is a really good spot to eat, excellent po-boys. Also in mid-city, the Rock N Bowl is pretty sweet, usually live music and obv bowling.
The Maple Leaf is a hetti night spot and has shows every night. Oteil from the Allman Bros will be there Wed and Thurs night. He is in NYC tonight for the 'final' Allman Bros show (yea right) and will surely by on fire in this intimate club setting with Johnny V on drums. (w/ Ivan Neville Weds, and Nicholas Payton on Thurs)
The House of Shock is one of the most famous Haunted Houses ever, and is closing after this year, so you may want to hit that up. Longinus and I are going Thursday evening and hopefully they will have the Saints/Panthers game on outside wherever the bands play.
Thursday afternoon the Krewe of Boo is having a Halloween parade, so if you've never been to Mardi Gras this is a cool chance to get a taste of what a NOLA parade is like.
Also, if you go all the way down Magazine Street (Decataur in the FQ turns into Magazine once you cross Canal, the main Blvd in NOLA) you can go to the Audobon Zoo which is really nice, and you can also go check out the Mississippi River if you want to see it in all it's glory.

WOO!!! Hippie crack!! bahahaha
I appreciate the tips though. Sounds like im gunna be doing a lotta running around. The maple leaf sounds like a must. We got tickets for Galactic friday night, and might do Rebirth with manny fresh saturday.

Parkway and Rock N Bowl are two places on my "must-go" list when my friends come to town.
The walking bridge over the tracks leading into crescent park (across from piety street on chartres) is the best view of the river and the city skyline for sure. The downside is that they lock the gates to the bridge and the park at 7pm :/
For the locals, the folks in my neighborhood bust open the lock on the gate for NYE so they can have the prime view of the NOLA and Gretna fireworks, so keep that in mind...
If money isn't an object, you are in the Quarter and there is a high concentration of ridiculous food. For the white tablecloth stuff, Arnauds and Antoine's are money. Both have bars which are more casual. GW Fins is the best seafood in the city, but it is not a New Orleans style place. Bayona is eclectic, and there is a nice patio there. Restaurant R'Evolution is also knockout. Right in the CBD/warehouse district is the James Beard best new restaurant in the country 2013 in Peche. Peche is outrageous.
For off cuts of beef, I'd recommend La Boca down by Howlin Wolf also in the Warehouse District.
If you hit Maple Leaf, be sure to hit Jacques Imos right next door. You can skip that if you are VIP since Chef is cooking for Voodoo.
Other stuff in and around the Quarter that you will want to try are: Killer Poboys which is behind Erin Rose bar. Jacob swears by it, but I haven't been yet. Cane and Table has gotten some recent accolades, but I haven't been yet. If you like Muffelettas, Central Grocery on Decatur is the original. Next door to that is Franks which is a dive but makes pretty badass Sicilian Italian and Maximo's is upscale of the same and also right there. Coops, also right there is pretty great bar food. El Gato Negro down by the flea market is good and has excellent margaritas. K Paul's has an awesome 10 lunch every day and is the place that started the Cajun craze in the 80s.
Mostly, just avoid the tourist traps and chains. Bourbon sucks, but Pat Os is cool, and you should get a hurricane since you haven't been here (skip the hand grenade everywhere else). Lafittes Blacksmith Shop is cool down by the east side of the FQ. Otherwise, it's mostly cover bands/neon bs tourist bars. Charters and Decatur are way better streets with better bars. I guess Irvin Mayfields on Bourbon does get money acts, and it's on bourbon. Otherwise, bars near but just outside the quarter worth a visit are R Bar and Mimi's . Keep your wallet in your front pocket, and don't let any street scammers harass you. Ignoring tap dancers, shoe shiners are random aholes coming up to you and betting they know where you got dem shoes is a must. Someone trying to give you a ticket for not smiling or whatever, keep walking and don't pay them any mind.
Killer Po-Boys is the shit!! omg... yeap. Longinus took us there after Jabco's tip. When you say "behind" Erin Rose it might confuse people on here. If you go inside Erin Rose, just go straight in past the bar and to the back and it's right there. We went there twice during Yazzfest. Pretty epcot Poboys. Def the best I've had, but I'd rather eat at Parkway Bakery because I like the vibe there and the "not in the FQ" location.
Def listen to Esteban regarding "people giving you tickets" etc. Those people are so annoying and suckers fall for it everytime. If someone tries to bet you they know where you got your shoes tell them to go away, I've seen tourists fall for that and then get bigboy'd outta money my aggresive urban youth ("On yo feet!")
In general, Bourbon Street sucks but is definitely worth walking down if you've never been to town just to see the gaudy clusterQuAcK that it is. If you are on foot in the morning/lunchtime in the FQ hit up Jackson Square for sure, that is a postcard spot and where a ton of street artists set up shop. Usually breakdancers or some other kind of troupes on the street across from there that can be fun to watch sometimes.
If you're on Decatur past Jackson Square always stop for to-go beers at Sydney's they have a pretty good selection.
Also, since it hasn't been clarified in here, because people who spend a lot of time or live in NOLA take it for granted, is that you can totally drink in public.
Cans and in cups or plastic bottles is totally cool. Carryin' drinks around and hanging outside of venues drinking your own stash before going in can save you a lot over the course of a party weekend like Voodoo. You can't drink out of bottles on the street for the obvious reason of broken glass, but people do it all the time. You can get a ticket for it and hassled by leos. The last thing you want while in NOLA is to deal with police over something stupid and avoidable.
I agree with all that Sarge, excellet tips. Also, you are from Colorado, so without breaking terms of service, it's a ticket in the city. Frenchman and most clubs on Frenchman that allow cigarette smoking have people partying there. The one thing to watch out for is the State Police. They have a bit of an attitude and are in town through early November due to the low number of current NOPD. NOPD cops won't ever hassle you for anything except fighting or passing out on the sidewalk or underage drinking or whatever. State cops are a little more rogue as many of them are from Baton Rouge, Houma or more outskirtted areas an. All in all, enjoy your stay, and if you run into any issues or have questions while here, post or drop any of us a PM.
Was already announced, but Republic has R3hab on Saturday night. From the email.
Head on over after Voodoo THIS SATURDAY to see recently ranked #23 DJ in the World by DJ Mag, R3HAB, live at Republic New Orleans! Supporting R3HAB are local all-stars Michael Medina, C-LAB, and Short Circuit. It's going to be a rowdy BASSIK Halloween!
Anyone who buys those with passcode HOMETOWNGUESTLIST gets 2 names on the guestlist for the local dj show they are running Thursday with Lemonhead, Klutch, Sawei, Captivate and Zupparty. I'm guessing these are local dj's.
Cheapest = Jefferson Parish Transit E-2 bus for $2. It drops you off at Loyola & Tulane, a couple of blocks outside of the quarter. It only goes that far on weekdays and before 7pm, otherwise you're getting dropped at the parish line at Tulane & Carrollton. If that happens, you can get on the RTA Tulane bus (#39) for another $1.25 and that'll drop you off on Canal. Both of those routes run like every 20 or 30 minutes.
I probably wouldn't want to be waiting on the Tulane bus with all my shit. But you wouldn't have any problems if you're getting on the one at the airport and getting dropped off in the CBD.
It's about a $35 cab ride and is about 9 miles (might have special rates due to Voodoo). If you have a hotel, van shuttle is probably cheaper (likely $15/20). If you aren't adverse, you can walk to the south end of the airport onto Airline Highway and catch the Airport Express bus (run by JET/Jefferson Transit) back to the city which will put you off near Poydras and Loyola Ave (aka Elk Place). This is roughly just past the Superdome but close to the FQ. Walk the 3 blocks to Canal, and when you cross that, you're in the FQ. The fare is probably $1.50 and would only take about 15-20 minutes depending on traffic. That runs 7 days a week until the evening, and if you click on the link below, it has all the information. If you need transportation to Voodoo, your choices are the 3 day, roundtrip shuttles for $60 or the Streetcar on Canal for $1.25 (hint: the Canal/City Park will put you off closer than Canal Cemetaries which will require about a 10 block walk).
So cheapest - Bus Easiest - Cab Quickest - Cab
The Airport Express is Route E2. It doesn't transfer to RTA (New Orleans), but since it travels to New Orleans, it doesn't matter.
Here's the link to the streetcar that runs Canal Street. The one you want (if you can get it) is Canal Street/City Park-Museum. As noted, you can catch the Canal Cemeteries, but you'll have to walk down City Park a good ways. That's kind of near my house. You can also get off of the Cemeteries at Canal and North Carrollton and walk down North Carrollton to City Park. It's a bit of a hike, but there are a couple of bars and coffee shops along the way you can hit. That's actually like 2 blocks from my house, so we'll be walking from there.

So if I catch the streetcar and get off at the Museum/Park stop, am I pretty much at the entrance to the festival? Looks like the Harrahs Casino pickup is really close to my hotel (Sheraton).
You will be as close as you can get without a bike. It's about a 4 block walk past and behind the museum. The entrance is kind of on the other side of the fest, but City Park rules anyway and is easy enough to cut through. Just follow everyone else. Another thing I would mention is that almost nobody goes to Voodoo early since we are a very late night town. You and I and a few hundred people will be it. It gradually fills in until packed for the headliners. This is great for front row at all the early shows but sucks for the artists who end up playing to a handful of people. So it is very unlike ACL or whatever where people show up early to get their money's worth.
