per wiki: "Usage of the term "intelligent dance music" has been criticised by electronic musicians such as Aphex Twin as derogatory towards other styles and is seen by artists such as Mike Paradinas as being particular to the U.S."
Got to be honest I'd never heard that or EDM before coming here.

I've never heard IDM before and I think it's pretty funny I started this debate by first saying "Forgive me if I'm not depicting the genre correctly ." So what you guys call it disco2000?

Everyone in Europe just calls it Dance but then there are lots of sub-genres that are quite hard to follow from there. A few of the high profile ones... Skrillex is dubstep Disclosure is house Chvrches would be synth-pop and not regarded as dance. I've only played one Kaskade song but reckon that is trance
I've struggled to describe James Blake to other people. Him and Burial (and others) often also get called dubstep and I don't know why. I'd be tempted to go with downtempo and explain.
Four tet and similar is generally just electronica.
I suppose it is easier because you don't need to be electronic to be dance (chk chk chk for example) but we are still bogged down with labels and identities of them.

Are you willing to be the official UK ambassador of bonnaroo?
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.

I never understood the need to separate every sound within the EDM genre. I was talking to a friend at work and she was asking me to "classify the type of EDM" for an artist she just discovered. I thought to myself, "what an odd request." It's EDM, that's what it is. I wish we could just refer to it all as EDM. But yes, it's just a silly concept, I don't even think I know all the sub genres of EDM. House, drum & bass, Trance, IDM apparently, dub step. What else? I'm missing so many here, but they all get lost in the shuffle. Is techno considered it's own genre? Or is it just another word for the broader term of EDM?
(And yes, Kaskade would be trance. And the artist she was asking about was Martin Garrix, I classified him as house.)

Mrs Disco offers this view about all genres not just dance. I think the broader stuff like house and techno which are defined by techniques and beats per minute etc are fine personally. Generally I find it is useful shorthand but these shouldn't be used to segregate bands or fans.
In addition to this, the UK and Europe had some high profile print magazines in the 90s and a lot of terms I've mentioned will have come from those pages. It is my understanding that mainstream dance music is a fairly recent thing in North America.

Electronic music creeping its way into the mainstream here is definitely a recent trend. I would say around 2009-ish is when it really started popping up. I remember I was talking to someone about liking techno & trance & she was like "Ewww. Techno? Really? I can't stand that kind of music!" Like 2 months later Usher released that one song that was pretty much all electronic, "OMG" maybe? I don't remember, and she was talking about how much she loved that song and she thought the beat was amazing. It made me laugh really hard, I was like "where do you think he got the influence for that?" She's dumb anyways, but that's when I realized how popular it was becoming. Then with the recent explosion of all EDM artists & success of fests like Electric Daisy Carnival, Ultra, & the introduction of TomorrowWorld in the states it's just even more apparent that it's gotten huge & isn't going anywhere. Personally, I like artists like Gabriel & Dresden, Armin VanBurren, & Ferry Corsten. I guess that'd all be a mix of house & trance? I like trancey-house I guess. Lol.
Edit: I'm not saying it hasn't always been around, it has, it's just kinda exploded in the last few years. In the early 2000's there was a huge burst of EDM around too when the rave scene really started to kick off while everyone was rolling their little hearts out. But I would argue that the type of EDM (&and amount & different emerging genres) are a fairly new trend. During the early rave scene I think that it was a mostly underground group of counter-culture kids who went around having warehouse parties. The days of test kits & water bars & secret shows, a la early 90's UK. Frontline assembly, skinny puppy, Front 242, are all pretty different from what is popular now. Even big groups like Prodigy & Orbital remain separate from what I would consider "popular EDM" in the "mainstream" here. And I use main stream pretty loosely, mostly among festival goers, because regular festival attendees I think are much more versed in EDM groups than the general public.
To be fair to everyone involved: If music didn't have any classifications, genres or types artists would not have reference points of sound. Baroque, Classical, Romantic era, yadda yadda yadda -- to the average person it all sounds a like as "Classical". It's not - and a composer and a performer will interpret all the different intentions included. Without some lines the painting usually falls apart.
To be completely unfair: this arguments needs to do this asap
I'm pretty sure you're calling me dumb. And I don't appreciate that. I'm not dumb at all, actually. And you, sir, are being a dick. (Don't really care if you're being sarcastic or not, if you're going to call me dumb please explain what makes you think so.)

So all 2 of them? Where I stated an opinion that was basically in line with everyone else? I don't see the need for 18 different sub genres of one category of music, it's an opinion. Doesn't make me dumb, just means I have an opinion and I'm sharing why I have said opinion. Don't really see what I said that warranted such a response from you. If I said something really controversial or shared an unpopular opinion or something, I'd welcome the free insults, it'd be expected. But I didn't, so I don't get it... But whatever. You can think I'm "dumb" and disagree. That's fine. But I stand by everything I said.

They're only "sub-genres" because people are too lazy and/or stupid to differentiate between very distinct sounds. If we're going to bitch about labels, why stop at sub-genres? Why have genres at all?

To be clear, my objection to "IDM" is that it's a painfully stupid name. There are plenty of times when it's appropriate to use a title to describe an artist, but everyone with any damn sense just calls Boards of Canada "bleep bloop stuff."

"What kind of music is that?"
"Music."
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN
Funny, I was just thinking that I feel like I'm arguing with flanz, and here you are.
It's not that I can't distinguish different sounds. I can. I just think that it's silly that whenever a new artist comes out, suddenly there is a random new label attached. Dubstep, & trap(t?) ,for example, are the two sub genres that come immediately to mind. I don't understand what makes trap different from dub step, but I also am not a dubstep fan, and don't really like trap all that much either. Maybe that's why they both just sound like noise to me...

So someone actually adds something worth a shit:
Dubsteps' focus is the drop and release points; clearly emphasized bass and most likely a melodic drone note (or stanza) throughout the piece. Akin to trance and elements of House, prior to the emphasis on ramping up> release.
Trap: Is specifically related to the 808 and like drum machines beats and snare sounds. Tight; usually cut themselves and then use mixers and effects with reverb. Moved from the down south scene of needing cheap but reliable keyboard synths and pads. The high octane snare sound that's popular now is a total take back from the early aughts trap scene.

It's odd that you would think of me, considering I've backed off the board quite a bit the past month and a half and let the idiots run the asylum for a bit. And I've also never argued with you before.
Anyway. You are aware that many of these genres of music existed before Random Person X that you just heard of, right? And, as has been the case through the history of modern music...people experiment. So, when someone takes a pillar of Genre A and mixes it with something from Genre B and something from Genre C...that's a new sound. Why should people be forced to put a round peg into a square hole because you don't want to learn a new word or phrase? And rather than taking the time to learn the difference between two genres of music, you'd rather gripe about the process of naming new and inventive types of music?
So, in summary...you're critical of types of music that you don't like or listen to frequently, and question people who are explaining it to you. Got it. Also....
