I always bring a tent with me. But last year I slept outside on an air mattress when I actually did lay down for that one or two hours throughout the weekend.
So I've been reading a few people just camp with an EZUp, tarp or a cover, and a blow up mattress or the like.
Has anyone used this method? Seems like a great way to get extra sleep but I'm worried about rain and bugs.
Last two years someone in my camp has done this. 2012, i just set up a cot under an ez up, made sure i figured out where the sun would be rising and just put a tarp that direction. Needless to say, most people were jealous when i was actually sleeping at 8 in the morning and they were awoken early by the heat. Then last year a friend did this and worked out perfectly. Again we used a tarp over an air mattress, this made sure we were above the bugs and such. As far as rain goes, as long as you have tarp walls you can normally keep dry. 2012 i was fine on sunday when it was pouring i think i stayed asleep till 12 that day too, i mean it was like four in the morning to noon, but i was proud of it.

This is exactly what I am thinking about too. I think i'm going to bring a tent then when i get up and its hot i'll move to a chair under the ez up or something. Still gotta work out details, but i'm glad others are thinking about it
I'm a strong proponent of the tarp/EZup setup - though usually I just put the tarp on the side facing east and tapestries on the other three so that there's still a breeze. I sleep on a foldable hammock, and it's wonderful. I don't wake up as sticky and sweaty and gross, I generally don't have to worry about bugs too much, I've been able to sleep until 10 on occasion, and there's more open space at my camp. If it's raining bad at night, I can just lower the EZup so it's more like a tent - it would be hotter this way, but dryer. I did a tent + EZup setup last year because the person I was going with wanted a tent, and it was okay, but I prefer EZup only.
What about an ez up or tarp that's over the tent? Not just draped over it but something that would block the sun from hitting the tent. Has anyone had luck with this?
Posted the same thing when this was asked on reddit yesterday - I've had overall success sleeping under a canopy, but you're going to want to be elevated off the ground, so a cot would work well. You might get spiders on you or dew or wook goo.
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.

I have been considering just using my cot or hammock under my EZ-up, but the idea that spiders may get near me (or ON ME ) while I sleep is probably going to make me sleep in a tent. I've seen some of the spiders at Bonnaroo and some have been pretty huge.....

I wouldn't be too worried - Brown Recluses and Black Widows are the only poisonous spiders native to the area and neither likes to be in an open field filled with people and cars. There are also pesticides on the farm potentially killing a lot of the diet of those spiders. The spiders that come to Bonnaroo are just there for the vibes, man.
disclaimer: if you get eaten by a spider i take no responsibility

Hahaha this made me lol.
As much of a fan as I am of the EZup-only setup, I will admit that I did once find a spider crawling on me while laying in my hammock. I may or may not have screamed and fallen out of the hammock.

LOL! I don't care if they are dangerous or not. I just don't want those scary creatures anywhere near me, period.
I've never had a problem with insects or spiders while on the farm and I almost always sleep under an EZ-Up. As far as spiders go I think the more probable source is where people store their gear through the year.
Watch out for snakes though.

For the past couple years I have used the ez-up and cot method and have loved it. I set up my tent mainly for a place to change clothes and store some gear I don't want out in the open. Tarps on the east facing sides and open on the other two so I wasn't closed off from the neighbors...
I did this two years ago with a hammock inside a screenhouse and it was GREAT. Except for the last night, when it was raining and we didn't have tarps over the angled sides of the screenhouse so it got pretty wet inside (I wedged myself into the car next to the cooler). Lesson learned, bring more tarps or have a straight-leg canopy/screenhouse.
The 3 times I've been to the farm so far, I've always taken a pop up canopy (not EZ-Up, but KD Kanopy). The first 2 times I also took a tent... The tent is nothing but an oven after the sun pops up. This year, I'm using the same setup I had last year- with no tent. I used my pop up canopy, with a tan tarp underneath for a floor (keeps cooler than the ground, gives me a floor, and helps with dew collecting at night). I sleep on one of those cheap patio loungers- the kind that fold on both sides- with a sleeping bag (does get cold at night). I keep a tarp on the east, south, and west side for privacy, which I roll up during the day for a breeze. Slept till 10 each morning last year. Highly suggest setups similar to this! (also, it helps that I have no shame- don't care if people see me when I change... if they like the show, good for them!)...

I've had large spiders crawl on my tent at Bonnaroo They are such freaky creatures they are immune to all the chemicals they spray.... I can deal with snakes, although I haven't seen one there yet.

See, I was intending on using this set up.. but I am deathly afraid of spiders. Centipedes, moths, literally ANY other type of bug I'm totally cool with but fuckin spiders man. I've heard totally mixed reviews from people now though haha. Some people have said that they've never seen a single spider, some people say if you don't have a tent, you're gunna get spiders. I think I'm going to end up bringing a tent anyways, just in case, and I guess I'll just have to see what it's like once I'm actually there.
I'm so fucked up by the time I go to bed during Bonnaroo that waking up with spiders on me is the least of my troubles. I literally slept through my tent collapsing from rain saturday night 2012. I was more or less submerged when I woke up.

I've seen spiders and other creepy crawlers in my tent the years I took one... best advice- spray your campsite with raid when you get there (and risk pissing off your neighbors), or cover yourself with bug spray at night.

I feel your pain. My fear of spiders is totally irrational and I become a total mess when I see one. I have been to Bonnaroo and seen none for a whole weekend, but I also have had them crawl on my tent and on my stuff in the campsite. I really have not seen that many, but when I have it was a major event for me

Oops I forgot to put in the so people knew I was kidding about snakes! Hah my brother is the same way with spiders and every year he will wake up smacking himself thinking one is on him.
how big of spiders we talkin here? people keep saying "big spiders" like quarter size? bigger? tennis ball?
tennis ball, but those are like 80% legs
that is pretty impressive. I don't know if camel crickets are in this area, probably not...but that is about the only thing I could definitely not handle.

Mostly smaller spiders that most people don't notice, but I do.... But I have seen a few large spiders - bigger than a quarter for sure - that is when I lose my shit.
Used a pretty swank set up with a tarp under under a Coleman ez-up. The ez-up came with a bug net for all 4 sides (2 having zippers to open and close the tent off) as well as 4 weather walls. Put the weather walls on the east side about halfway down at night and with cars/tents near us pretty effectively blocked out the sun. Also the ez-up comes with a battery back and powers 4 or 5 LED lights for being able to see at night.
I am in no way shape or form concerned with spiders or insects at the farm. In the interest of full disclosure though, I got bit by a spider while I was there and had to go on some antibiotics once I got home from roo. One of our neighbors said she got a pretty bad one (worse than mine) the year before.
No fucks given, I will be back out underneath an ez-up and sleeping on my cot this year.
