Haha I wasn't being serious with my office survey. There's only one other person in my office right now. But the worst part of this debate is that now I've started listening to Disclosure and have another conflict.
Fuckers.
Edit: And like I said, I was referring to who's a bigger name to the general population, and noted that the demographic of people who go to fests is different. As fests themselves become more mainstream, you're gonna see more casual music listeners attending.
I get that. But you can't compare a festival crowd to the general population. Its always going to be younger and more closely aligned with present trends in music. Just because someone is a more recognizable name to middle america doesnt mean theyll be a bigger draw at a fest that primarily caters to a specific set of people.
The Backstreet Boys effect, a random soccer mom is going to recognize the pop bands her kids listen to but probably wouldn't recognize a live artist like Umphrey's McGee. But since that soccer mom is not dragging her young children to a 4-day music fest, you still don't want Justin Bieber to be your headlining act.
Festivals being more mainstream is resulting in "older" bands and performers increasingly taking the headlining spot. It's more the driving factor for having a performer like Elton John (appeals to older audience because of nostalgia, appeals to younger audience because it's a legendary performer they've likely never seen live). I don't see it driving pop artists to replace mainstream artists, unless 13-year olds suddenly become the people who buy all the VIP tickets to 'Roo.
Thursday: Rudimental -> (break with maybe some of Cass McCombs) -> Real Estate -> Cloud Nothings -> Banks -> Ty Segall Conflicts: Nothing too bad. Real Estate is my #1 for the weekend. Maybe some Polica/Pusha at the end of the day.
Friday: (nothing) -> Danny Brown -> Vampire Weekend -> Kanye -> Superjam Conflicts: Nothing in the early afternoon excites me all that much so I'm just going to go hard Thursday night. That VW/NMH/Phoenix conflict is freaking brutal (my gf's top two acts of the week). I'd rather see VM (even though I prefer Phoenix) to get a decent spot for Yeezy but I have a feeling I'll be at NMH because of the gf. I'm going to avoid Disclosure because I have a feeling it's going to be a shitshow.
Saturday: Classixx -> (break... maybe Cake) -> Cage the Elephant/Chromeo or Grouplove/James Blake -> Cut Copy -> (maybe some Jack White) -> Flaming Lips -> Darkside Conflicts: I prefer Cage the Elephant and Chromeo over Grouplove/James Blake but it'll come down to a vote in my group. Jack White is cool but I want a good Flaming Lips spot. Darkside over Kaskade/Zedd seems like a good idea to me but that could be sleepy time, too.
Sunday: Okkervil River -> Washed Out -> Broken Bells -> Wiz -> Elton John Conflicts: Not much since I think this is the weakest Sunday I've seen in the four years I've been. Washed Out is the only Sunday act I need to be at. Wiz is a show my friend wants to see even though I don't care for his new music. He still kicked ass a few years ago, though, and he doesn't have any insane conflicts so...
I'm not a metal head, but I'm oddly drawn to the idea of very late night Meshuggah. I bet that will be a crazy show.
You and me both. I've decided I'm going to pass by on the way to my tent and get super surreal feels for a couple songs before passing out for the night.

This is decent logic, but you've got a basic fact backwards: over the past several years, contemporary acts have been selling festival tickets more than older acts have, causing more and more festivals to book current acts. These bands aren't Justin Bieber or Rihanna, because that's not the festival crowd; they're usually acts popular with 20-something music fans (so more rock, hip hop and EDM than teen pop) and they're often critically acclaimed acts such as Kanye West or Vampire Weekend or Phoenix.
At festivals like Lolla and Coachella, these younger acts have tended to displace older legacy acts, though recent-ish acts from the 90s/2000s usually hang on. At Bonnaroo, they've mostly displaced jam bands, who are even less of a festival draw these days.
In any case, you cloud the 'mainstream influence' debate when you start talking about Ice Cube and Justin Bieber as though they were the same thing. One's a legacy 90s gangsta rapper, one's Justin Bieber. For many reasons, Ice Cube is a big draw at Bonnaroo. He's huge, famous, influential, made great music, and doesn't perform live all that often these days.
Really though, this whole Disclosure/Ice Cube thing is silly. Ice Cube's not going on the Other Tent. It would make more sense for him to switch with Arctic Monkeys or Wiz Khalifa, but I didn't write the schedule. Disclosure's set was going to be crowded anyway. They were always going to be playing a LN tent. People are concerned because not all the acts they're up against have mass appeal (an unannounced superjam and a niche band) and Disclosure's in the smallest tent. If anything, they should simply be in one of the other two tents and/or playing a later timeslot.

Thursday Stop by Wild Feathers > Preatures > Alla-lahs > catch end of Robert DeLong > ZZ Ward > probably stay in That Tent to catch a spot for Real Estate > Banks > Polica > J Roddy > Ty Segall Conflicts: Had hoped to catch Jonathan Wilson. Thao/Real Estate/MS MR is tough. Really wish Banks and Polica didn't overlap.
Friday Start with Green Sky and head to John Batiste > Big Sam > Dr. Dog > Jake Bugg > Janelle Monae > wander past Head & the Heart to get a spot at CHVRCHES > Superjam ? > Chance the Rapper if I make it out that late. Conflicts: Green Sky/John Batiste/Vintage Trouble/St. Paul is a tough cluster. Dr. Dog/Big Sam/Wood Brothers/Seun Kuti is also a toughie. Hate to miss Andrew Bird & Naked & Famous, but don't see how to fit them in!
Saturday Stop by High & Mighty > Valerie June > First Aid Kit > Grouplove > mosey past Phosphorescent > Lauryn Hill > Jack White > FLIPS til I get sleepy > figure out what is happening at that Skrillex Superjam Conflicts: Can't seem to fit King Khan & Haerts. Damon Albarn v. Grouplove - hope Damon's at the ? Superjam the night before.
Sunday Bloody Sunday Start at Vance Joy > catch end of Lake Street Dive > stick around for Sarah Jarosz > Warpaint > Washed Out > Broken Bells > Bluegrass Superjam > Elton Conlficts Galore: Missing Carolina Chocolate Drops, Yonder, Capital Cities, Okkervill, GOAT, FatT, City & Colour, Shovels & Rope, Amos Lee. Have seen Capital Cities, FatT, Amos & Avetts before, so natural to skip. Really bummed on City & Colour + Shovels & Rope.
Nick Cave, Flaming Lips and Frank Ocean is the worst conflict I've experienced at a festival personally. Triple whammy!! So I could see one comfortably, two partially from kinda afar, or all three very briefly.
I will have already seen the F'Lips seven times by this point, but that's because they're my favorite live act. Them at roo will be unforgettable.... but I'm also seeing them at a 1500 capacity venue a month later, which might even be better. Nick Cave is a rare opportunity but I might have to just go with Frank because I love him.
Ice Cube and Disclosure at the same time is going to be tough too.
Might have to leave NMH early to get a good spot for Kanye - not sure how many VWeek fans will want to stay for him. (Wilco and Macca had a lot of crossover so nobody left their spot)
There's practically nothing I want to see before ~5pm on any of the days, which definitely was not the case last year. It seems like the post-headliners are really the emphasis now, which is frustrating considering how little sleep I'm going to get. Who thought Chance would work better at 2:30 in the morning than on a nice sunny day?

Do I get an awesome spot for Chromeo>Cut Copy, or try my luck for James Blake then Cut Copy?
James Blake was high on my list, but Chromeo>Cut Copy will be an incredible time on the which stage. I can't think of recent back to back shows on that stage with a higher potential of pure joy. As sad as it may be, I might resolve to skip James Blake.

One less conflict for me. Just won tickets on DC101's Elliot In the Morning show to see Phoenix on June 7th in DC. Neutral Milk vs. Vampire is still a hard one though.
I'd really been picturing A Tribe Called Red as a night time show. I'm all over the place on Friday and Saturday if this is accurate but can camp out all day on Sunday so I guess that helps.

Disclosure, Ice Cube, and the mystery super jam is good for me. Although I'd like to see Disclosure and Ice Cube I'm now hoping they'll draw the majority of the crowd so I'll get a good spot for the super jam. Ice Cube is a rap bucket list act but I'll live without seeing his show. Disclosure will be a good show but is gonna be crazy crowded and I'm going to assume I'll be able to catch them at a fest in the future. The super jam is one of a kind so this is a no brainer for me.
The biggest conflict for me is on Sunday between Seasick Steve and King Khan. I think Khan might get the nod.
My biggest buggaboos, bold are currently favored, artists I've already seen in italics:
1. Nick Cave vs. Flaming Lips vs. Frank Ocean 2. NMH vs. Vampire Weekend/close or pit for Kanye West 3. Mastodon vs. Disclosure, Superjam, end of Kanye 4. Chromeo & Cut/Copy vs. James Blake vs. Lionel Richie vs. Ms Lauryn Hill 5. Thao and the Get Down Stay Down & Cloud Nothings vs. Real Estate 6. Pusha T vs. Ty Segall vs. White Denim 7. Banks vs. Omar Souleyman
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.

Should we split this off into separate schedule discussion and post your schedule threads? There are two very different things going on in here. A schedule leak is pretty big, so I don't see why we shouldn't split these up.
