We're going for quantity over quality, damn it. 5 scruby QBs on the roster, and 5 new WRs (finally) for them to under throw.
Biggest positive from the Browns' draft: no huge negatives. No John Football baggage, nobody who takes vids of himself toking out of a gasmask, nobody who is already at risk for needing microfracture surgery in the near future, and no Trent Richardson II. It was a nice draft really, probably filling a bunch of holes, but it is disappointing to think that we probably still don't have our 2018 starting QB on the team, and going even .500 next year looks unlikely.

You guys got a steal in the last round. Scooby went from 2 star recruit to best defensive player in college in 2 years. Now he has an even bigger chip on his shoulder in the NFL about being drafted 5th from last

You may be onto something there. I had no idea who he was before reading up on him today, but he looks like he could be a real stud. And he jumped into a pool with his clothes on when he got picked, so he gets bonus points. Plus his name's Scooby.
Sure beats trading up to pick a kicker (even a great one) in the second round. Jacksonville also had a great draft, according to damn near everyone, and they had a lot of nice players to build with, so they are poised to be pretty impressive in another year or so. Same story for the Raiders - they're close to being really good, and getting closer. Maybe we'll have that sort of excitement...next year, when we hopefully have the QB situation settled.
I've always been a baseball guy, but the NFL and NBA are way more interesting right now, for whatever reason.
he's a game manager. when you have a team like that, there's nothing wrong with being one. but he's definitely not an elite QB. he's got a top RB and top defense to make his job really easy.
ugh...why are so many Browns fans so oblivious to reality? He's not going to be the next great NFL QB. He's probably not going to be even marginally good. He's a dick and if I were an NFL DE/OLB who was salivating for a big hit, he would be first on my list.
To clarify...I have been a die hard Browns fan since I can remember, but I live in reality. This was a bonehead move, forced by another bonehead Cleveland sports team owner, and we will probably be looking at another GM, Coach and first round QB next year. The only consolation is, that in next year's draft, there are some QB's worth taking a risk on. As always...waiting for next year.

this thread is depressing. Manziel, Bortles, Bridgewater, a who's who of who's not anymore.
I'd say Bridgewater will start somewhere next year. His saints contract is essentially a long audition. Brees getting injured only worked for Bridgewater.
I'm becoming increasingly convinced that the head coach has a lot more to do with the team's performance and even the QB's own performance than the QB himself.
Would Darnold and Mayfield now be considered the best QBs from the 2018 draft if they were playing for McDermott or Harbaugh instead of Gase and Kitchens respectively? Would Brady still be headed for the playoffs if he was playing for any other head coach (and would he have half as many rings had he been playing for a different head coach for the past nearly 20 years?)
Football is a system sport like no other and the combination of a coach's system, in-game decisionmaking on the fly, and ability to inspire players has more to do with a team's success than the contributions of any one player.

I can only speak for mayfield but I 100% believe he would be better under a competent head coach, but not to the level of Jackson, Mahomes, etc.
Hard thing about your question is that we don’t have anything to control the confounding variables of a QBs talent. Coach matters, OC matters, strength of schedule, receiver talent, and O line all can effect how a QB preforms outside of the talent of said QB.
idk that McDermott is some kind of QB whisperer or anything, Goff has had 2 good years and was fairly mediocre this year.
and yeah i definitely agree that coaching level is most important, there are guys that succeed in multiple systems (Brees, Manning, Farve, Palmer, Warner, Rodgers come to mind, to a lesser extent Fitzmagic), guys that succeed despite having ass coaching (Eli, Ryan, Watson, Dak), and guys that struggle even with good coaching (Flacco, Cutler)
i feel like tannehill isnt going to be this good ever again, Mahomes/Jackson/Rodgers all got to sit and study before being thrown in, Mayfield was significantly better last year and Hue isn't exactly a good coach. would someone like Garrapalo have been as good as he is in NE, probably, but youd be hard pressed to convince me anyone is a better coach than Bill. Bridgewater was just marginally better playing for the Saints as he did the Vikings, he's been in the system for 2 years and there was a clear gap in production behind him and brees.

I was referring to Bills head coach Sean McDermott, not Rams HC Sean McVay. McDermott has taken a work-in-progress team to the playoffs two out of three years.
(Yes, of course, the evil genius Bill Belichick is the greatest head coach in the history of the NFL and just about every player is better in his system than anywhere else. Players tend to fall off the face of the Earth when they leave the Pats and go elsewhere. Whatever happened to Danny Woodhead?)
You better add a few detours for Manziel on that road to the greatest NFL quarterback...or a dead end maybe
Unfortunately this got ruined when sewage flooded my basement. If not it would have surely been updated to "The Road to DeShoney Football" to commemorate the DeShone Kizer era.
But fortunately I've got Baker Mayfield in my life now. The truth, the answer, the savior LeBron never allowed himself to be. I think perhaps, its time to create my next masterpiece.
