I didnt hear booing really, just the usual gay fish jokes and scolding him to shut up ad just play music and stop ranting. I feel these were the same people cheering after Jack Whites rants the very next night, tho i didnt follow them arouasnd all weekend to confirm this.
Kanye's rants were not only longer than Jack's but Kanye's rants and random stops in the music took away from the flow to the show for me. Jack's rants I felt had momentum with the show at the time and in some cases added to the performance.
I didn't think either artists rants negatively effected their performance. One issue people cried about over the 2008 show, was how Kanye didn't address the crowd once. Now he gives you a 20 minutes speech and he should shut the fuck up. I found both rants amusing and made the shows more personal. Everyone else's opinion that's different from this, is simply wrong, and you should delete your account and stay home next year!
Of course context matters. The point is, either enjoy it or don't. I don't see anyone else getting upset about what other shows people did or didn't enjoy. A lot of people talked shit to my face about shows that I thoroughly enjoyed. I didn't have to defend them. I just let it go. It's not like Kanye is the only person ever to get booed. Artists are there to entertain, if they fail to do that, then so be it. If you were entertained, then what does it matter if others weren't? No one can argue about the fact that most people at Bonnaroo did not enjoy the show, or even attend it. And the plain truth is, he will probably not be back.

Somehow I really doubt this.
Excellent point. Seeing as you were there, or are actually me. So should I instantly discredit everything you say?
Cake - "small venue" entertainer, weren't loud enough, not enough energy, lame presence, not enough crowd working, sucked, dissapointing
Flaming Lips - Hippie trap, eye candy, no real talent, has beens, liked them when they played "real" music, bonnaroo treats them special
Jack White - not as good as with White Stripes, not as good as with The Raconteurs, seemed crazy
Damon Albarn - Should have only played Gorillaz, solo album sucks, not enough Blur, wasn't loud enough
Bluegrass Superjam - lame, boring, doesn't belong at Bonnaroo
Skrillex - Just a guy pushing buttons, just flashy lights and no talent
Everyone has opinions. But that doesn't mean I share them.
Also I hate the "we pay them to entertain us" argument. That's not how art works.
Actually, that's exactly what Bonnaroo does. They pay the bands. We pay Bonnaroo. Without us, they are still artists, but I guarantee you they won't be at Bonnaroo.
The fact is that the people heckling from the back of the crowd only ruined the show and vibe for those around them. From the pit you could only hear and see people having a fantastic time. The energy was so high and so positive it was infectious. When Kanye started his two rants I actually smiled and laughed. It's Kanye. He rants. That is no surprise to anyone. The hecklers words did not make it to Kanye so it was a waste of breath. The only thing you could hear from the front were thousands of people singing along at the top of their lungs to nearly every song. That is what Kanye heard. So what speaks louder? The people yelling "Fuck Kanye" from the back, or the sounds of the crowd singing along to every chorus, dancing and moving the entire time, and jumping when he asked us to jump?
I had a great time. It may have been my favorite show from the entire weekend.

We don't "pay them to entertain us," we pay to be entertained by them. There is a difference.

Please explain the difference. If I pay for a ticket to a show I want to see, and I am entertained, have I not paid for entertainment?
Obviously the way you're phrasing it, we are not kings who pay people (any person) to come in to entertain us whether or not they can even perform anything, play an instrument, dance, etc. I don't think anyone is under the impression we are just paying anyone to entertain us. But artists are paid to perform at Bonnaroo, are they not?
Good one. You're somehow completely justified by writing everything off. I can see you're a real stand up individual.
There's a huge difference between "talking shit to your face" and "critiquing/criticizing." Not for one instant to I consider someone saying the White Stripes are better than Jack White Solo "talking shit." And I find it impossible to believe that someone really said the Bluegrass Superjam didn't belong at Bonnaroo.
But this thread is about people going to Kanye's show and heckling him while he tried to perform and others tried to enjoy. Unless all those things you listed happened under similar circumstances, you're just running your mouth right now.
lol someone actually said that the Bluegrass Superjam doesn't belong at Bonnaroo?
There were a LOT of people I met at Bonnaroo this year that said really distasteful things. The Bluegrass Superjam comment was by someone who was upset about the lack of EDM Sunday night.
Btw, I don't know if anyone else left Kanye early to get a spot at Disclosure, but there were "fuck Kanye" chants before Disclosure got on. It was weird.

So if someone says something distasteful about an artist we like/enjoyed and we feel it's completely misinformed we should just accept it and be fine with it? I don't care if somebody says they disliked the Kanye set because there was too much talking, too much downtime, and not enough songs they wanted to hear but if they twist around the words of his rant or try to say that he's just a piece of shit who doesn't belong there then I'm going to speak up and argue.

The difference is that if we pay them to entertain us, as you keep phrasing it, it implies that we have the right to dictate what they do in their performance. We do not have that right. We pay to be entertained by what it is they do. With Kanye for example, if you pay to go to his show (not in a festival setting, because you aren't paying just for one act in a festival setting) you are paying to see him. You are paying to see what he does, you are paying to hear his rants, his raps, his music, to see his production. You are not paying him to do whatever it is you want him to do. That is the difference.
In a literal sense, yes, artists are paid to perform. Obviously people are paid for their performances, I am in no way arguing that. But I think we have different views on what that means. I take it in the way I tried to describe here, that we want to see them and see what they do. Whatever it is they choose to do. I do not take it as "we're paying to do x, y, and z and that is what you will do."
I'm not the best at describing things in text, so hopefully this made sense.
You don't have to believe me, obviously this is the internet, and you have the right to say as many mean spirited things as you would like. Enjoy it. I was just trying to say that regardless of what opinions people have, it shouldn't distract you from your enjoyment of the show. I watched Kanye, didn't enjoy it, and didn't feel the need to tell everyone. I was not distracted by anyone booing or saying fuck Kanye. I didn't even hear it. And when someone says negative things about a show you just said you enjoyed in a non-constructive way just to disagree with you, I would call it shit talking. I wasn't offended, it doesn't bother me. People say all kinds of things. But I don't think anyone should be worried about what was worse. I think you should try to retain the positive memories and continue forward. I'll gladly fuck off now.

By the way, I never said those words. iamthehorn threw that in the mix. But I understand what you're saying.

I was in virtually the same spot for both Kanye and JW: in the pit, about two or three "rows" from the stage.
Kanye's stage banter definitely detracted from my enjoyment of the set. Jack's did not.
The thing that most bothered me was that he seemed to be taking some liberties with the truth. It really took me out of the flow.
I didn't hear any booing during his set but I did sense a bit of a change in the energy of the crowd and there was some chuckling, especially when he went all Alanis on the word "humble."
I don't get wasting energy hanging out, booing and heckling. Especially at Bonnaroo. There's so much more to do.
