Parking was super easy. That was my big worry going in and as soon as I got there, I was super relieved.
I actually took advantage of the Big Ears rate and moved from the Crowne Plaza to the Hilton. Chances are that I'll be ending my nights at either the Bijou or Tennessee Theaters and not Scruff City Hall. It was like $350 for 3 nights there (after taxes).

OH MY GOD! I just realized that, with a guitarist (paging Mr. Dessner and Mr. Cline), Kronos Quartet can play Death Is The Road To Awe at Big Ears. I could retire from music after that. Real talk.

For those who don't have 17 minutes to listen to the interview, here are some notes.
- Capps had wanted Kronos Quarter since Big Ears 2009 but schedules never worked. He said they were always booked by the time he had begun to program the festival. To remedy this, he asked them for 2015 the day after 2014 ended. - 2015 is Terry Riley's 80th birthday. Riley was at Big Ears 2010 for his 75th birthday. He spoke about a potential collaborative performance (probably with Kronos). - He stated Wu Man would perform "The Cusp of Magic" at BE 2015 (I didn't see this on the lineup) - He stated The Bad Plus will perform Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" plus some of their own pieces. - He spoke about how he liked the festival mixing in jazz elements along with elements from Appalachian folk. - Kronos Quartet will perform new folk songs with Rhiannon Giddens and Sam Amidon. Capps said he saw them at a concert together in September and was absolutely blown away. He spoke about potential expansion to the program he saw then. - Kronos will be in town the entire weekend. There has been lots of potential programming under discussion such as potential master class with students, Q&A's, DJ night with Dave Harrington where he talks about his favorite music. He said that they have brought so many ideas to the table that they probably could have programmed the entire Spring with them. - The basic organization will be similar to last year. He says they really want to focus on activating the KMA. He mentioned making it the place for public interface with festival but said they were unsure how to make that happen exactly. He again brought up the idea secret shows from artists with some potentially being out of downtown in both indoor and outdoor spaces. He mentioned increasing the film aspect of the festival especially with films with live musical accompaniment. Jim Jarmusch will be presenting films that are meaningful to him not (just?) his own films. He spoke about a collaboration with the Criterion people (hello Bishop). At this point he mentioned that some plans will end up shelved for later editions due to amount of ideas. - They chose Knoxville bc of the unexpected element. People expect this music in big cities. The festival being in an unexpected location allows festival to take on a profile and distinctiveness that sets it apart. He loves walkability of downtown Knoxville. He said you can lose that in larger city locations where things end up being more diffuse. He wants to highlight the Tennessee and Bijou Theatres. He spoke about how much positive feedback he had seen in articles re: them. - He was asked about the hiatus with Big Ears. He said Moogfest became distraction from Big Ears. Moogfest 2010 was meant to be much smaller and took on a life of its own. It took up more time and resources than he had originally planned. After Moogfest 2010, he realized he hadn't started Big Ears 2011 yet. When he tried to get it going, he ran into too many stumbling blocks, i.e. acts and venues being booked. He decided to take 2011 which became 2012 and 2013. He said an overture from The Aslan Foundation was what really brought it back in 2014. - For numbers in 2014, he said the festival had a couple of thousand people a day. 1/3 local. 1/3 regional (200 mi radius) 1/3 all over (europe, japan, mexico, south america)
I'm also betting The Pilot Light is one of the "secret shows" venues. You really have to want to see something there to go to it.
You hush. The Pilot Light is great. I agree that it is on the list as the bread and butter of their bookings is stuff that would go over with the Big Ears crowd. Add to that that it is relatively close and tiny which would make for a perfect intimate venue to see somebody on the lineup.
Oh, I'm not talking bad about the venue. I love it. Lets just be honest about how close it is when you're on a schedule.
I feel like I only made it once out there. I would have loved to have seen an actual show.
Did you drive? It is really only a hop back over to Gay street walking wise. 5 minutes if you hustle. Did any of you last year make it to the after shows at the Bird House?

Ha, that's the first I've heard about after shows, or the Bird House..

Same. I know what the Bird House is, but I don't remember anything about after shows (official or otherwise) being there last year.

One of the DJs who played last year was just talking about them doing something else this year. I hope so, the place is very chill and the music good and deep housey.
Also: Holy Shiz, I need this festival. I feel like I've talked about poop for 2 months straight. I need nerd time.
Tomato Head is always good. Especially downtown, I think our options are somewhat limited depending on the amount of people who are there. For example, Stock & Barrel is the jam but getting any kind of large party in there would be abysmal.
Haha. This had gone back burner in my head due to other things. I looked at the lineup again today and immediately got fired up again. Such a crazy lineup just with the initial acts.
Fortunately for us, this isn't MOEMS and we don't need a huge place. I'll actually have some spare cash and might be able to throw down for a private room if we can all agree on somewhere.
I'm still beyond excited. I'm just feeling like it's going to be January before we get anymore news.
