'Roo is booking big names and mainstream acts, it's not doing the "three days of jam bands" thing.
Umphrey's McGee put on a great set this year, for what was basically an empty field. Vampire Weekend played a mediocre set for a crowd that went all the way to the arch.
It's a bit sad though, What is a great venue for jam bands, and they're just not what's going to draw the numbers.
That's kind of cherrypicking though.
Vampire Weekend was fifth on the line-up. Umphreys was much lower.
Also Damon Albarn (14th) and Bjork (4th last year) both played wonderful sets to practically empty fields on the What Stage. It's all about the musical competition, the weather and 100 other things that I can't think of right now. But the What Stage is a great venue for all types of music. Jam has certainly been played there as much or more than any other style barring the giant category of "rock" but I'm very much in favor of Bonnaroo continuing to evolve.
I kind of wish that they would change up how they schedule What and Which. It's always kind of a little sad seeing the first act of the day on What because they are inevitably playing to just about the pit.
I'd like to see them take the top five ranked bands of the day and put them on What. The next five go on Which. The rest are dispersed amongst the tents as they currently are.
This would keep What and Which pretty well attended by the mainstream audience and keep the tents accessible. Less bands would be playing to an empty field (though this is admittedly more of a What problem). You also wouldn't have to choose between Phoenix and Vampire Weekend, for example.
(Obviously, this is adjusted to account for Late Night acts.)
Also, I'm fine with MMJ as a Sunday headliner. It's fitting for Roo.

It all depends on what the final line-up looks like and whether or not it's a "weak year." But I join the consensus in thinking they'd be booked around 4th or 5th and would likely get a pre-HL or LN-Which. But part of me wants AC to just say "fuck our convention" and throw them on the Sunday HL slot anyway. And a part of me wants to think that's actually pretty likely--that MMJ would be one of those bands that AC would over-evaluate when it comes to booking because they know that it would resonate with their fanbase and be a special moment regardless of the turnout.
Also, they probably want a year where there's not a shit-ton of traffic leaving out on Monday after having Sir Elton close out the festival this year.
I'd argue that MMJ has the same sort of fan base as Radiohead does, especially to Bonnaroo goers. MMJ unoposed on What would be more packed than some recent headliners. It might not get any youngens to buy tickets but neither Elton John or Tom Petty. They're legends at Roo. Plus the fact that they would save money booking them instead of ________. That would leave more money for a Prince or somebody similar. MMJ would be one of the few Sunday headliners that would get me to stay until they finished, which hopefully would be sunrise. When down in Mexico they put on 3 unique and amazing performances. Any one of those shows topped Jack Whites performance by a decent margin. If given the chance to headline it would be one unforgettable legendary set, isn't that what Bonnaroo is all about?
Some of us have things that we can't get away from for a week like school. Not to mention can't spend 4 grand on a vacation
I understand not being able to get away from school but the price is $1400 plus airfare which is roughly $400. This is for all you can eat/drink. How much is the total Bonnaroo trip? Play sick for 5 days, it's worth it!

MMJ most definitely could hold down a headlining spot. The real question is whether they get the chance to hold down a headline spot. They would convert a lot of people if they played a Saturday headlining spot. Sunday would not be good for them seeing as a lot of people would probably start leaving for home early, even though I would love to have the headline Sunday.

Okay maybe I got the room price wrong but last year when I looked at flights they were much more than $400 plus transportation to the hotel which is apparently expensive.
Not that it matters. With my program the majority of classes are MWF and 3 unexcused absences means -5% off your final grade. Not to mention if there was project due during that time I would be seriously fucked.
When Roo was doing the semi jam headliner every year on Sunday I thought MMJ was a likely headliner under the theory there is only so much Phish, WSP, and DMB you can shove down someone's throat. Now, I think it only happens under two circumstances. 1. As someone already said they blow their wad on someone like The Stones where they know they still sell out with a weak #3. 2. We get a scenario like last year where someone bails and MMJ take the Jack Johnson replacement spot.
I have a feeling we get either pre MMJ again in 2015 or a LN Which to support a Black Keys headlining slot.

Lol at a Black Keys headlining slot. Their last Roo set was lackluster and un energetic. I've seen some good shows by them but I think that time has passed, barring a deal with the devil.
I think they would be billed 4-6th when they play next year. Really, MMJ should ONLY play late nite sets, thus allowing them to play as long as the want. Placing end times on them is a waste. That said, if we gcould get a split headliner, something like The Dead > My Morning Jacket (late nite what) I would be like this guy:

Yea yea, we get it, you're not a TRUE My Morning Jacket fan. Cause a true fan wouldn't find excuses.

Widespread Panic is a bad example. The festival was really, really different back when they headlined every other year. They've moved away from jam headliners in favor of more broadly popular acts. There still are a handful of jam acts that could headline (Phish, DMB, Dead variations) but I would be surprised to see Widespread headline the festival again.
MMJ had a much better chance of headlining back when Bonnaroo still booked jam headliners every year. They were one of like two young-ish jam-ish groups who looked like they might be able to headline a major festival at some point.
As has been said, a 4-5 spot makes a lot of sense, ideally with a LN stage set. These guys could play third though, especially on a lineup with two very strong headliners.

I didn't say I wanted them to headline. But if you look at the venues they play and their radio exposure, it's hard to argue they're any less popular than Kings of Leon or Jack White. Lackluster or not, if they come back to Roo, they're probably coming back as the #3.
If Bjork and Lionel Richie can be headliners, then MMJ definitely can
Lionel Richie wasn't a 1 ~ 3 spot headliner.
I'm not a fan of extended play acts being forced into small timeslots, if they're putting MMJ on the farm, I want them in Jack White's spot so they can play late, not a compressed set like Umphrey's got forced into this year. Otherwise, put them as a late night act elsewhere and let them play as long as they want.

I'm Actualluy glad to inform you that I saw part if their set at hangout this year and my friend watched the whole set and I thought it was pretty good and he was extremely pleased to say the least. I had heard of how much their shows had dropped off since the early days, but I really didn't understand what people were talking about because they more than satisfied me with a partial, then I went and boogied down at STS9. So while I'd prefer they didn't headline roo, I wouldn't be very surprised if they did, but I don't think next year is the year for them to headline roo

I love that the Black Keys seem to be every festival's "Shit... We forgot to book a third headliner. Someone call the Black Keys, I'm sure we can get them."

I thought that was Kings of Leon... damn I'm behind the times
Circuital is fucking great, go back to the headliner prediction thread where you belong, boy.
At least you are implicitly acknowledging that the other three albums are Not Great.
The only album of theirs I wouldn't call great is Evil Urges and the fact is that the run from At Dawn to Z is one of the best album streaks of any band in the 2000's.
However, I agree with most of the others that MMJ aren't headliners yet. The best I see them making is 5th on the lineup and hopefully getting a 2+ hour long LN Which/What set.

Evil Urges is my third favorite behind Z and It Still Moves. There has never been a lot of love for the album and I don't understand it.

Don't get me wrong, it has its fair share of fantastic songs (Touch Me 1 & 2, Evil Urges, and Librarian to name a few) but some of more standard rock songs on the album really just don't hit me the way some of the songs off their other albums do.

Where do you guys think they would have been billed in this year's lineup? Somewhere between 6th and 10th in my opinion. Even with their Bonnaroo history I don't think they can headline.
