I should've said "electronic dance music" has been used since 1985 (with EDM merely be an abbreviation of those 3 words). It's hard to prove when a word/phrase entered the lexicon other than checking yearly editions of dictionaries, but this Wikipedia article mentions the timeline of the terminology: link
I'm guessing that you were referring to my second sentence, since you didn't reference why or in what way that I was wrong, it was more of a "nuh-uh"
From my personal experience as someone that has been involved in both underground and mainstream electronic events for over fifteen years. And I can safely say that it wasn't until the late 2000's that I started hearing the term "EDM" getting tossed around. And I was never talking about the lengthened electronic dance music term. Only EDM. And I definitely don't consider artists that did or still use turn tables and vinyl to preform. I understand that things have mostly gone digital and I understand why dj's have adapted. But, back to my original "nuh-uh" statement. Yes, using the term EDM as a catch all for everything electronic is not, in fact, correct.
I was suggesting that EDM is synonymous with "dance" or "dance music" in that it encompasses any genre of electronic music made for dancing. I don't use it to refer to all electronic music (ex. drone is not EDM). I understand that recently it's become a marketing/commerical buzzword for anything remotely synthesized, and I agree that it makes no sense to use it to refer to "not dance" electronic music.
That Lemaitre show last night was incredible. I even dug the openers. Both Tomboy and PANAMA were pretty incredible. The drummer for PANAMA was insane. My buddy talked to the lead singer of Tomboy at the bar between sets (she was pretty smoking), apparently theyve played Bonnaroo before? They had a set on the Solar Stage a few years back. Had no idea... Anyway, Lemaitre themselves were absolutely incredible. Great stage presence, great stage show. I don't understand how this band hasn't blown up stateside yet. They are pretty big in Europe, but here they are playing a hole in the wall club in NYC for like 150 people. Amazing set. Can't wait to see them again. Here are a few shots I took.
Here you go kids. Go learn yourself something, lovelies.
How can we learn when you're way up on that high horse! haha
but in all seriousness not very surprised by the list, only thing that is somewhat surpising is that Tiesto wasn't on there by then, must've been shortly after for his breakthrough, hoping to see ferry corsten at tomorrowworld but schedule conflicts galore i'm sure
edit: i'm not sure why this list is supposed to "shock" us as the claim, it was 15 years ago wtf do you expect. and that's wtf to them, not you. thanks for the list!

Yea, I'm not sure what's shocking about this. It just looks like a list of great DJs. The funniest part to me is that Richie Hawtin and Chemical Brothers are listed as "new." Obviously way more people want to make dance music now so there's going to be a lot more crap to sift through. Still lots of great stuff to listen to.

I learned that in 1999 some magazine thought Boy George was one of the best DJs in the world, and made no mention of Moby, Underworld, Orbital, or Daft Punk. And now my brain hurts.

This is causing something that resembles a memory, but not quite.
I love how when people are confronted with an opinion that doesn't validate their own feelings they immediately retreat into the "you're a troll" mantra.
I am of the opinion that most big-room EDM is repetitive, simplistic, derivative and boring. I am also of the opinion that rotating through the same group of presently popular EDM acts constitutes boring and unimaginative booking.
