Tauk & Khris Royal and Dark Matter are playing a $12.00 kickoff show at Howlin' Wolf on Thursday night. Jabco alerted me, and we will both be in attendance barring some crazy ass other show popping up in the meantime. Presented by Live for the Music. That's a f'n steal of a show. Having seen Dark Matter in a variety of personnel and having seen Tauk 3 times in the last year, I'm all over this.
Edit to say I was going to go to Bob Moses at Hi-Ho, but it depends on time of shows as to whether I can make both.
One more email with a bit more Halloween weekend information:
6th Annual Baller's Ball featuring Juvenile, Mannie Fresh and Cheeky Blakk Blakk Blakk Blakk at Maison Friday 10/30 for $20.00 or $35.00 if you want balcony/VIP
Halloween Night:
Quintron & Miss Pussycat with Peaches and White Mystery plus DJ Pasta at One Eye Jacks for $22.00
Galactic & New Breed Brass Band at Tipitina's for $35.00
Halloween at the Maison featuring Flow Tribe, DJ Jubilee, The Big Easy Brawlers and Street Legends Brass Band for $15.00 early bird and $20 GA
Blue Nile - Mike Dillon Band and Gravity A <--- This will be a great show, and hopefully they will do the all night bacchanal. But there isn't much information on that yet. FWIW, it's next to impossible to get in this show without advance tickets.

Y'all locals have to tell me the best food spots, both in NOLA and what to eat in the festival. I looked at the menu and the fat ass in me was drooling.

Not a local, but I'm a fan of:
Midcity (close to voodoo):
Parkway Bakery (poboys, generally regarded as best in town) Katies (fried catfish meuniere over french fries) Mandinas (super old school neighborhood restaraunt, I go primarily for nostalgia because my parents used to take me here all the time but I still think its good.)
CBD:
Tommy's Cuisine (just ate here for the first time in August, slightly more upscale, great service, great food. Get the Crabmeat Sardou if you want to try something uniquely new orleans. Went with the whole family and I liked everything everybody got.)
Garden District/Uptown:
Coquette (kind of a younger hipper cuisine feel) Cafe Abyssinia (hole in the wall ethiopian food, only place i've had ethiopian food but its fracking awesome) Cafe Atchafalaya (i understand the bloody mary bar is a big hit, i just loved the food) Commanders Palace (if you want to go super upscale, jackets required, still one of my favorite places to eat)
There are like 900+ restaurants in town these days, tough to even begin to give you a rundown without knowing what part of town you're in, what you're craving, etc.
As for the festival, I'll second esteban's suggestion of the yakiniku from Ninja. I'd probably try whatever Koz's has going on, Food Drunk is hit or miss but can be really good, can't go wrong with Drago's oysters if you're into that, and even thought they're not from here I'll definitely be trying Dia de Los Tamales out of Chicago (Zaitch, you know anything about these guys?). Cafe Navarre is a decent sandwich shop here so their stuff's probably worthwhile.
Go to www.nomenu.com There is a restaurant list there with over 1400 restaurants in town (skips the 500 or so fast food type joints). In that list is all restaurants by Neighborhood. If you tell me where you're staying and what you like to eat, I'll give you some good recommendations. I haven't looked at the APP since they first put out some of the menu items. I like Puffs of Doom from Chicago. They will be there (ate them at Hangout, Waka and Bonnaroo this year). Ninja's Yakiniku rules all sandwiches. It's essentially Bahn Mi meets Japan. So you have this awesome Vietnamese baked French Bread with some pickled vegetables over garlic stirred ribeye of beef strips. I get mine with no Mayo or Cheese but I do add sesame seeds (they have a shaker if you ask) and sriracha. It's about my favorite thing from any festival ever. I ate one each day at Voodoo in both 2014 and 2015 and got one at Buku too. Once you get one, it's one of those mouth-water flavors.
As for the rest of the fest, this is what appeals to me (pulling up the app now):
Cartozzo's: Seafood Bread Bowl with Corn/Crab Bisque <--- Had that last year. Very, very good.
Drago's: Chairbroiled Oysters. Basically they just shell the oysters and put the half shell on a grill. They dump this garlic-butter solution on it and finish with parmesan cheese. I actually don't like parmesan cheese, so I usually get mine with just the garlic butter. It turns the whole bite into a delicious bite of the ocean meets New Orleans. You get a half dozen. It's very rich, but it's also a pretty unique taste that's being replicated everywhere now, but they are the inventors.
Phil's Marina Café - Fried Shrimp Platter
Red Pepper Catering - Bacon wrapped oyster
Susie's Catering - Shrimp and Grits Biscuit
^^^ Those are what I'm look at along with a Puff of Doom or two and certainly Yakiniku
Good stuff. I want some tasty seafood, specifically. Authentic NOLA stuff. Although I'll eat anything.
Where are you staying, because there are probably good places and traps. If you like seafood, worthwhile places are Galley Seafood on Metairie Road, Fury's at Veterans and Martin Berhman. Both have excellent fried seafood. Acme is pretty good if you are in the FQ or Metairie. I don't like Deanie's, though some people recommend. Not far from City Park, you can get a good fried shrimp or fried oyster po'boy at Parkway Bakery. Since you are not from here, sandwiches come "dressed" which means lettuce, tomato, pickles (75% of the time) and mayonnaise. You tell them dressed no mayo, dressed with extra tomatoes or whatever depending on what you like. There also just opened up a place around the corner from me called Bevi Seafood. We got some last week, and it was good. They do fried and boiled. It's about 10 blocks from Voodoo.
One way a lot of people eat seafood here is a seafood platter. You can get them broiled at most places, but generally it's fried. Catfish, shrimp, oysters, sometimes other things like stuffed shrimp, stuffed crab and what have you over fries and toast. If you want to do casual but a little higher end, Mandinas on Canal is good. They are open every day, but Sunday is a little squirrley. Higher end, Peche in the CBD was rated best new restaurant in the country in 2014 by James Beard Foundation. GW Finns is great for dinner, but you'd only be able to there Thursday, and it's dinner only whereas Peche is lunch and dinner.
Again, I'd recommend you go to www.nomenu.com. They have restaurant lists by neighborhood, cuisine, alphabetical and whatever. If something catches your eye, mention it and one of us will tell you what's good there.

We'll be just north of the French Quarter, I think it's called the Treme area? We picked it since it's close to the French Quarter but would be on the way back from the festival. It's near the corner of Esplanade and Villere. I'll def check out nomenu.com.
Okay. So you are close to the FQ. I'd avoid Deanie's and Redfish Grill. Great seafood at Mr B's (can go in jeans) and Boutbon House is pretty decent. There is an Acme Oyster Bar and a Felix's across the street. Both should have excellent raw oysters. If you get in wsd or thurs and planned on dressing up, Antoines, Galatoires or GW Finns. Even Emerils downtown from you which is about a 10 cab ride will have good seafood. If you want it more casual, Peche is it. Those guys went down to Uruguay and got some new fire cooking methods. So they do whole fish and pretty eclectic shit but very down to earth. Verde Mart has good shrimp Poboys and is in the FQ. There is an okay lunch buffet place by where you are staying called Lil Dizzys. It's not the greatest, but it's authentic creole and will have shrimp pasta, fried chicken, creole gumbo (that's seafood, sausage and offal), greens and shit. Once you get a look at that list, drop some names and we will tell you if it's good or not. < 3 weeks now.
So as of right now it looks like I'll be doing that Tauk show on Thurs, and the Leaf on Friday with Luther and Roosevelt (can't go wrong there).
Not bummed about Monsters of Funk, as I hate the cavity search I always get going into the Joy, and tbh, I'm a lil sick of Eric Krasno/Adam Deitch et. al brand of funk and want hettier sounds. June Yamagishi is my man for nola funk raging.
For breakfast/brunch I'd recommend Surrey's or Biscuits & Buns. My gf works at Surrey's in the Garden District (both are on Magazine Street), and they have badass food. Def the best brunch spot I've eaten at in NOLA, but I don't have an impressive list of places I've been as I'm not a foodie and prefer to blow my money on concert tickets rather than things I'll be flushing down the toilet hours later.
Expect a nice long wait if you go to Surrey's after like 9am or so. It can be up to an hour but I go when it opens and don't wait at all. Surrey's Uptown has an outdoor section and can accomodate more people I think.
Biscuits & Buns is where I had breakfast this past Saturday. Place was dank! Had a 30 min wait but it wasn't bad because it's nextdoor to Banks Street Bar, which had incredibly blood mary's with house-made mix. I hate ordering bloody mary's and seeing some bottle of Zingzang come out. I coulda made that shit myself.
I plan on checking out that Ethipoian place previously mentioned this weekend. I'll be in NOLA the next five weekends so I'm gonna utilize this list, and will pass on that www.nomenu.com website to my gf who has way better tastes than me and can pick out some great spots.

They blew it by making this saturday instead of friday. Hopefully something good pops up for friday soon.
Not so wild about Fyre Dept which doesn't suck regardless, but Break Science live with Shady Horns and Coomes is Break Science Live. Fuck, that would be Top 5 if it was at Voodoo itself. Ballers Ball at the Maison (sells pitchers!!!) with Juvenile, Mannie and Cheeky Blakk should be a reasonable alternative if you can't find anything else on Friday.
Also going to Tauk on Thursday unless something crazier pops up. Not sure about anything else that weekend, but I do want to see Break Science, CoC and Mastadon.
I will be hitting Papadosio on the 24th and am about 50/50 on Gang of Four on the 25th.

I'm also 50/50 on Gang of Four. Probably gonna have a late night the day before and m'lady and I are driving up to the Angola Prison Rodeo that Sunday morning. Don't know if I wanna do a Tip's show that will go too late and drive home all tired for work Monday.
Wep, Howlin' Wolf finally posted their Devil's Night show, and I will 100% be there! $50 with a poster that I would be payin' $20 for anyways (most likely) isn't terrible with a VIP area as well as ameet & greet/ signing. I'm gonna assume the special guest is Perry Farrell.

I got one anyway. If they had a nice screen print for that Dumpstphunk Halloween show, I'm sure they'll have one for this.
I thought about it but I'll just buy the poster there if I like it. Would have to get two VIP tix bc gf and rather not do all of that.
As for that special guest, I feel like it could be Perry but Dave Navarro seems more likely now that I think about it. I doubt they'd hype up Stephen Perkins, but he is a possibility since he played with some of them at Wild fiya during Jazzfest last year.
They clearly hyped special guest to make people think it was Ozzy though, well played. #yearight They could really have anyone from the Ozzy band show up, which would be cool as hell. Even without a special guest this show is gonna be amazing and will get the blood pumping in anticipation of the Ozzy & Geezer Saturday night.
Howlin' Wolf still ain't put out their Halloween show yet. If it's really good I'd be down after the Mastodon show depending on energy levels. I have no problem being super late to Voodoo on Sunday, don't need to be there till Fishbone.
In tears in the middle of the 4 Points Sheraton Cocoa over that shit. Pure Art Deco cheese in this bar with a view of the giant surf shop attached and black tip reef sharks and moreys. Somebody call peta. Btw, all my kids went to Decadence last year and said it was pretty great. But the 2 nights of Tribe they caught while in Denver was better.
