If the mystery SJ does turn out to be the New Basement Tapes, what do you guys think of the possibility of them waiting to do that on Sunday ala the Dr. John/Dan Auerbach SJ of 2011? I think with it seeming likely that MMJ plays Friday night and Mumford headlines Sat. that it's definitely possible. Would you be happy or sad if that one wasn't a late night?
Man, the thought never even crossed my mind for that because they haven't done it since but that would actually be a great idea. Perhaps it could be the first SJ to play on the What or the Which? They could close the Which or pre-pre-HL the What. The one big problem that I have with them doing it on Sunday is that unless they played the What or Which earlier in the day, they'd have to conflict with the Bluegrass Situation SJ, which is not something they don't like to do. But I really wish they would make the Basement Tapes Superjam in the Arctic Monkeys spot on Sunday. I now have a new unrealistic hope for the scheduling this year, thanks!
Haha, just messin' with ya, and it's OK because you did admit that it would be a downright evil conflict. I think we'll be alright with King Gizz, they seem primed for a Thursday LN. I just hope Roo doesn't completely screw up, and have them play at noon. I hope that one of SBTRKT, FLyLo, or STS9 closes the tent after Atomic Bomb! on the night opposite of MMJ's LN. I'm also kinda hoping that either RTJ or MadGibbs plays late on Thursday to soothe the Fri. and Sat. LN conflicts.
Although, even if it did turn out like that, Atomic Bomb! > King Gizzard > the last couple hours of Jacket would be otherworldly.
No, I completely agree, fuck me for making that Friday night LN conflict. The acts you highlighted would seriously be the worst conflict in Roo's history. Also, right before that, was Atomic Bomb! versus Freddie Gibs/Madlib which would be awful, for me at least.
I could see them giving Gibbs/Madlib the closing spot or second to last in the Other Tent in Thursday. I'd be very happy if they ended Thursday night Gibbs/Madlib -> King Gizz or the other way around. Here's to hoping that Mac Demarco, Gibbs/Madlib, and King Gizz all get put in the same tent B2B on Thursday (in any order) because that would officially be the best Thursday tent combo to date.
I'm gonna work up a new one that's a bit more optimistic, with a couple of weird scheduling a that are kinda unlikely but I could see Roo possibly doing them.
Ok, sooooo. I made this just going off of acts I think could realistically get latenights (except for King Gizz, that's just a personal wish) and I made the conflicting shows based off of how bonnaroo likes to oppose different genres... That being said, I took a look at the conflict(s) I made and I cringed. But, hey, prepare for the worst and hope for the best!! But seriously, if they fucking book Friday latenight like I did, that shit will be evil and I will be pissed.

Friday What: Belle and Sebastian (5:30-6:45) -> Kendrick Lamar (7:45-9:30) -> Deadmau5 (10:30-12:30) Which: Spoon (7:00-8:00) -> Ben Harper (9:00-10:30) -LN-> MMJ (1:30-3:30) This: Brandi Carlile (6:45-7:45) --LN--> Flume (12:30-2:00) -> Run the Jewels (2:30-4:00) That: Punch Brothers (6:00 -7:30) --LN--> Atomic Bomb! (11:30-1:15) -> King Gizz (1:45-3:15) Other: ODESZA (6:15-7:15) --LN--> Freddie Gibs & Madlib (12:00-1:30) -> Flying Lotus (2:00-3:30)
Saturday What: Ben Folds w\ yMusic (5:30-6:30) -> Florence + the Macine (7:15-8:45) -> Mumford & Sons (9:30-11:30) Which: Gary Clark Jr. (6:00-7:00)-> Tears for Fears (8:00-9:30)-> Childish Gambino (11:30-1:00) -> Bassnectar (1:30-3:30) This: Dawes (8:15-9:15) -LN-> Superjam ? (12:30-2:30) -> SBTRKT (3:00-4:30) That: Twenty One Pilots (8:30-9:30) -LN-> BTBAM (11:30-1:00) -> Slayer (1:30-3:30) Other: Atmosphere (7:45-9:00) -LN-> STS9 (12:00-2:00)
i would personally do this...
Friday: (camp for Kendrick)Belle & Sebastian > Kendrick Lamar > (camp @ rail) for Atomic Bomb! > King Gizz > (end of) MMJ
Saturday: Ben Folds > (end of) Gary Clark Jr. > Tears for Fears > get hammered at campsite > Superjam > Slayer > (end of) Bassnectar
switch SBTRKT with Flylo and thats an easy schedule for me. Friday - Spoon, end of Kendrick, MMJ Sat - Superjam, Flylo
edit: although that Atomic Bomb placement is painful... I def wanna see that
Music Midtown: 2011 Bonnaroo: 2012 - 2016 Forecastle: 2013 Rock al Parque: 2014 420 Fest: 2014-2018 Shaky Knees: 2015 - 2019, 2021 Seen tons of local shows since 2004.

I can't describe how much my brain hates this. But you're right! Better to see it now rather than later.
I'd be most upset if Slayer conflicted with MMJ. This I can handle, going off the assumption that RTJ will be too packed to even consider. deadmau5 > MMJ > sleep. sucks to miss flying lotus but you're always gunna miss something.

A Run the Jewels and My Morning Jacket conflict would be terrible. They are my #1 and #2 and I would like to be in two very different head spaces for each show.

I feel like that is one of the less likely LN conflicts, I think Slayer and MMJ will be on opposite nights. Also, I think Slayer will close a tent and my hope is that because they are not restricted by a set ending to their time slot, they will do their full 2 hour show. But I'm not counting on it. My biggest realistic concern is some combination of any of Atomic Bomb!, MMJ, Gibbs/Madlib, and/or Slayer conflicting with each other. The worst thing for me would be Atomic Bomb and King Gizz conflicting but there's no way Gizz gets a Friday or Saturday LN.

That's a bad conflict for me, but the crowd at run the jewels is gonna be wayyyy too packed, so I'd easily choose MMJ in that situation.
Btw, I think it would be pretty cool to have one of the tents be Run the Jewels -> Slayer because both of those shows will be so rowdy, yet they are opposite genres. So it'd be cool to be it shows with such different music, but similar craziness. Potentially, that is.

I hope you are correct regarding Slayer and MMJ on different nights. That would pretty much layout my LN schedule for me. I haven't even listened to any Atomic Bomb but I'm sure once I familiarize myself with it it will be something I want to see. Gibbs/Madlib would also be awesome to catch, I dig the record and have a feeling it would be a quality hip-hop show. But my other top priority after Slayer and MMJ is STS9, if I could catch all three of those I'd be very happy with my LNs.
As for Slayer, if they play LN I think they'll play the first LN set, similar to Mastodon last year, with a wildcard playing afterwards. I'd be totally cool with them playing the later set though.
Are we not considering Run the Jewels in Ice Cube's slot from last year?
No, I think Childish Gambino is the only rap act that can play LN Which because he's the only act with popularity for it. I mean maybe Atmosphere could, but I just don't think they (or any other rap act) has enough popularity to play LN which
While we are discussing whether acts could play the Which or not, I think Flume might pre-HL the Which like Zedd last year but if get a LN, he'd be in a tent. Is this opinion shared?

Very much agree. He's at just the right spot on the line-up.

I think we have to also think of the possibility that Gibbs/Madlib will be the closer for That Tent on Thursday like Pusha T. But either way for conflicts with MMJ -- as long as it's late night it will run long and you can catch the end at least. My worry is FlyLo vs. MMJ... then I might throw something at my screen on schedule day
edit: Also don't underestimate the ability of AC/e to throw RTJ during the day on Which.

Sadly, I expect FlyLo versus MMJ to be the situation on Friday. I think it'll be MMJ vs. FlyLo vs. RTJ/Atmosphere/or Gibbs/Madlib that conflict will make me want to cry. I'll probably go to part of the rap show and then go watch MMJ shredddd into the morning light

Yeah that was the main thing that made me pause, I agree that they would never want to have two superjams conflicting. Although it still might be possible since the Bluegrass SJ is becoming a Sunday tradition, and people might not be as mad about having to miss that one. ? Superjam > Robert Plant > Billy on Sunday would be pretty cool.
I'm curious as to what the third super jam will be and if it'll be announced right before the festival like the Wu Tang SJ
I'm not thinking they're going to have a third superjam. But they may come out and announce exactly who is going to be at Atomic Bomb! show when they announce the surprise superjam

That would be awesome, especially if the ? Superjam is the basement tapes because a lot of those songs on the album feel like they'd be a better fit for late afternoon in the What field than they do for a LN dance party. I'm working this idea into a mock schedule right now

I see RTJ either closing a tent or in a LN tent. All the rap acts that I can remember playing the Which have been either popular legendary acts (Wu-Tang, Ice Cube, Cypress Hill) or popular newer acts (Lil Wayne, Gambino, Wiz, Mac Miller). The main thing is that any that have played the Which have been super well-known. As much as RTJ is beloved by inforoo, I think they may still be somewhat underground to the masses. I could be wrong about that, as RTJ2 has certainly spiked their popularity. Yet I still see them in a tent, which will be pretty packed.

AC should just let us schedule it out, I feel like we could do a far better job
So to put in perspective, CG will probably be What Stage mid-day. Flying Lotus at That Tent LN unless they have no sense. Atmosphere, shrug, probably works best on Which but could be What or That depending on time. RTJ is much more popular than it seems. Who the Fuck is G-Eazy?! and why do almost as many people want to see him..... Sadly I already knew this but Freddie Gibbs and Madlib are both pretty far off the mainstream radar - but they have rabid fans. More people need to hear Shabazz Palaces but they are on Sub Pop and don't really care about promotion. I can't explain to anyone why more people want to see SZA than Shabazz; just ain't right

Red Bull has been promoting SZA like crazy. She is one of their top 15 artists to watch in 2015.
Shabazz Palaces have been raved about for their live show, so a solid chunk of people will definitely attend.
Gambino is really good live, I wasn't feeling that "Because the Internet", but I saw him for the second time at Lolla and he didn't miss a beat. I'm curious if they stack him against most likely heavy competition at LN, or just give him that which closer on Sunday like Wiz.
Run the Jewels will continue to increase by the time Roo rolls around.
Flying Lotus will continue to increase as well.
Dej Loaf is one that I think will continue to grow on people too, she's the youngest rapper on the lineup and she's brand spanking new. Perfect time for Roo to get her.

Oh and G Eazy was big on the warped tour circuit a few years back, as continues to grow. I'm not saying he will be the next Macklemore, but he's got a pretty solid fan base. His music is solid, but he's still not on my radar.

Yeah, seeing these numbers makes me dislike America as a whole for their taste in music, haha. Do yourself a favor, DO NOT listen to the G-Eazy guy, he is by far the worst hip hop act on the farm. I am really just worried that Gibbs/Madlib will get an afternoon slot like Danny Brown did because of the low number of people adding them. I think they should either let Gambino play before Florence + the Machine or he should get pre-HL Which before Mumford plays. The best hip hop acts are, undoubtedly, Atmosphere, Run the Jewels, Shabazz Palaces, and Gibbs/Madlib (I don't count FlyLo as hip-hop) and they're all deserving of latenights. So they should give Shabazz a late Thursday show and then have Atmosphere and Gibbs/Madlib play LN one night and RTJ play a LN on the other night. Then just throw SZA and G-Eazy in late afternoon slots.
I think we have to also think of the possibility that Gibbs/Madlib will be the closer for That Tent on Thursday like Pusha T. I honestly think it'll be MMJ from 12:30-?, with no other act playing that stage.
So you could see the first 2 hours of MMJ's epic set, and then have a rather shotty spot for Fly Lo who I think will close a tent 2:30-4:00am. The way Fly Lo's show is, especially of late: he should be a closer.
That Unlocking the Truth>Pallbearer>Royal Blood(pre closer)
LN: BTBAM>Slayer
They really should do this, the only reason that I think they may not is because they just did the metal LN tent last year, so it'd be kinda repetitive but the metal heads won't give a damn about being repetitive if they can stay at one stage ALL DAY and see badass metal acts.
