This is my first post here and will be my first visit to the Farm. I just had a few questions however.
How big are the campsites? I'm going with two other guys who went last year and we're taking two cars, but I just wanted to have an idea for how much room we will have. I've been looking online, but have been unable to consistently get the same information on campsite size. We have a REALLY big tent for all three of us, and they don't seem to have any qualms about it fitting, but I was just wanting to be more aware of how things are going to be.
Has anyone had any luck with bucket toilets? I don't have anything necessarily against porta-potties, but was thinking this would be a lot easier for a morning or late night dump. If I do this, I plan on using relatively heavy duty trash bags, and replacing them after every use. While I've seen the bucket toilet covers, I was thinking something more like this: uk.pinterest.com/pin/214061788515134407/ I figure the noodle is going to be way more comfortable and possibly more sturdy than one of those cheap seats. I planned on probably setting this either in the tent, or between the two cars while using. If I set it in between the two cars, Im going to try to find a way to jury-rig a tarp to help hide from people. Does any of this seem like a bad idea?
Also, I do have a single size sleeping bag that I was considering just stuffing pillows inside of it, putting a blanket on top, and using that as a bed. Whenever I'm done with it the next morning, I figure I can roll it up and secure it with a bungie cord to save space. Has anyone had any luck with this sort of idea or anything similar? I'm a fairly big guy, so things like a hammock are out of the question. I've heard nights can get a little cool, but unless middle TN is way different than East TN, I think I'll be okay with just a blanket.
If I think of any other questions regarding camping, I'm probably going to post them here unless I find a more appropriate thread.
If I'm not mistaken, you're usually given a 20' x 10' space per car (including space your car will take up), so I figure you should be ok with a large tent. Just offer your neighbours a few beers when you roll in, people are generally cool sharing space if needed, but getting them drunk and stealing their space is easier than asking.
As for the noodle bucket shitter (I wish this phrase was in my day to day vocabulary), give it a shot I guess. I've resorted to the gatoraide bottle in the tent, but never considered dropping a deuce. The idea of making a tarped in private Porto between cars would be my suggestion, if anything, cuz it make me think of building a fort when I was a kid, except you plan on shitting in the fort, which kinda changes the way you gotta approach things.
Thanks, buddy (I love that your avatar is the head of the WGA, World Canadian Bureau).
I'm thinking a makeshift toilet/changing room will be a good idea but I'll run it by the guys I'm going with to see what they have to say. I feel like I'm putting so much thought into this compared to them, but that's probably because of this being my first time.
I've read that after the sun rises, the tents get unbearably hot. I'm driving my own car, and am thinking of bringing two extra styrofoam coolers, with the full intention of making an "air conditioner" out of them. I got the idea from this video:
I would use one cooler solely for the AC unit and one cooler to store the saltwater ice. For power, I was thinking of using one of those power bricks that you can buy to recharge phones. Im going to keep my eye out for a good sale, as I saw a large capacity one on sale for ~10-15 bucks a while back. I figure I could charge it at night, wake up hot, set up the AC and get a couple more hours of shut eye or just all around relief. Any ideas or suggestions?

Not trying to be funny but what kind of car do you drive? If you get decent gas mileage, just make sure your car is on full when you cruise into the gates and periodically jump into the car and turn the AC on blast to cool down. That's the only way I survived sunday last year bc I was sunburnt and the heat was getting to me. It's also easier to do that than to make a lot of ice chest thingies that take up space in your car and might not work 100% -- just a thought.

I don't think I've ever heard of someone dropping a deuce in a tent. You, sir, are an American hero. Or something.

First thing's first. I would strongly recommend against shitting in your tent. The floatie shit bucket is a great idea, but I'd take it in between the two cars. I doubt most people would really even care that much so long as: A) it doesn't stink up their area and B) they can't actually see the shit coming out of your body. Otherwise most people will probably just add that to the detailed list of anecdotes they share with their friends on Monday.
Also, that turning your sleeping bag into a bed idea is excellent. I've never done anything like that so I can't speak to whether it's a good idea or not, but it sounds great to me. I usually just sleep in my sleeping bag on the ground like the good prole that I am, but you should definitely take it to that next level. I've also never had a problem with being too cold at night. I always keep a light jacket in my bag during the day and at night a sleeping bag is plenty for me and I'm a pretty small dude.
Feel free to keep posting your questions in here. There'll always be people around to answer them.
First, ew. Just take your dump in a porto like a non- serial killer.
As far as getting cold at night, last year I went to bed boiling a couple of nights only to wake up a few hours later with ridiculous shivers. A few hours later it was warm again. I'd still bring a light blanket just in case. Better to have it and not need it, ya know?

we built two of these last year, and they really didn't contribute in any positive or cooling capacity. My only advice would be to make sure you buy the most powerful fans you can, though given that they are battery operated it falls short a bit. If anyone else has a similar experience and found a way around it, I'd love to hear it. I'll be sleeping in a hammock this year, but would gladly build another one of these assuming it actually benefited the tent.

These don't work well in the dry Tennessee summers. Like someone else said, fans are better. My best advice for sleeping in the morning: (a) sleep under a canopy, not in a tent. (b) get a battery powered fan and keep it at arms reach (I pretty much cuddle mine at around 7 or 8 am, and get a few more solid hours comfortably.) (c) sleep on a cot for 360 degree air flow. It's all about air circulation.

I had room for a 6 man tent and a 10x10 canopy one year, with room to spare. Another year the same 6 man tent was touching neighbor tents on both sides and we couldn't fit the canopy at all. It all depends on the parking attendants and a little bit on your good or bad attitude. You might convince them to let you park your cars side by side, and if they say no, you might just be a jerk and park next to each other anyway. Remember, once one of you gets through the entrance, you'll have to wait for your other car to get through if you want to park together.

I'm so happy that I got a cot for Christmas (specifically with roo in mind)!!!!!!!

This confuses me more than anything. Why people think it's better to poop a foot or two away from someone's tent home rather than walk 20 yards to a porto.

I think you'll have all the room you need. The reason I'm so confident is that you mention taking two cars. This gives you two "spots" for three people. So it should be roughly 20x20 if the 20x10 single space theory is true.
They make "shower tents" that people use "bucket toilets" in. You can get the "pop up" style for like $40.
We always use an air mattress to sleep on but honestly, I think it's more trouble than it's worth as far as comfort goes. It always deflates overnight and certainly doesn't provide any airflow to help keep the temperature down. I also enjoy sleeping under the canopy vs. inside a tent, but sometimes the fear of rain keeps us from doing it. I second the comment about the battery powered fans for sleeping in the morning. Get the O2 brand that takes 8 D batteries, make sure you get decent quality batteries and it won't fail you the entire weekend.(unless someone forgets to turn it off)
Most likely, there are threads that cover all of this, but whatever. As you can tell, some of us love to share their experience gained by being veterans of the farm.

You won't need to move stuff to save any space inside your tent, unless you find a good way to shade it, since it will probably be unbearably hot inside as soon as the sun comes up. In the best case, you may get the sleep you need, but you will not be spending any time inside your tent during the day. If it is as hot as it is sometimes, sleeping outside under a canopy is the best way. Bugs are not much of a concern.
In a tent or not, I highly recommend finding something that keeps you up off the ground and doesn't insulate you too well. It can get cool at night, but in 2010 I remember it being ridiculously hot all night, all weekend, and we could barely sleep. 2011 was crazy hot too, and I slept outside in a lounge chair, which was waaaay better. Now I use a hammock, but cots are probably about the best thing. If you get cold, you can throw on some jeans and a hoodie or something, but if you are too hot, that is harder to remedy. An O2/Ozark Trail battery powered fan is a nice idea.
And with two cars, you should have room for most tents if you are only putting up one. Also, a shade canopy is considered a necessity here, more so than tents even.

Good call on the fan being O2/Ozark Trail Brand. I've seen the O2 version for $30 or more and I believe you can still get the Ozark Trail version at WalMart for $19.97. It's the exact same fan.

Hey everyone! So I have a group of 7 headed up to Bonnaroo this year for our first time. I've been doing a lot of research to make sure were fully prepared for everything and this site has been a huge help! My question is about our tent:
I'm looking to get two 10x10 canopies and have them next to each other, we'll put walls on all of the sides and then sleep under that. Is this a good idea?

I like it, but I'm not sure about the walls thou. A breeze can be a god send in that heat. Bring a mallet and some good stakes for the tents and canopies =) Have fun and welcome to the site!

Thanks for the tips! I'm thinking maybe just put walls on the sides and keep both ends open? I'm always encouraging everyone to get small portable camping cots so that there's air flow under us. I imagine it will keep us a little more cool while we sleep!

It's a great idea. I did this with 1 canopy and used tarps on all 4 sides, we tied the walls up discretionary. We actually slept with 3 walls up, with the morning sun side blocked. Get some battery powered fans and sleep on cots.
The only thing I was a little worried about was if two 10x10 canopies will fit in a space? What do you guys think? If it won't then we'll drive two cars and I feel like it would be fine then.

Each car gives you around 20x10 space. I think you said your group has 7 ppl. I'd take two cars. I'm sure your neighbors wouldn't mind if a canopy was a bit over their space. Idk anyone that would say no to more shade at Roo haha

Walls that you can remove/push up during the day would be the way to go.

Yes they have walls to add to the canopy so I'm sure they're quick and easy to remove if they're not needed at the time!

Leave as much room as possible between the car next to you as you park. As soon as you park open your doors. Leave them open until you are done setting up. This will get you an extra 1.5 or 2 feet on either side of the vehicle. Do not steal your neighbors space. You will be glad to be on good terms with them. Obviously offer beers and assistance to your neighbors. With two cars though you should have plenty of space.
Hey guys! This is my second time going to bonnaroo and I'm currently buying a new tent for our group! There are four people going in one car. Its a stretch I know but we really really don't have any other options. I really want to buy an 8 person tent as its not that much more expensive than a 6 person tent and we could all sleep a lot more comfortably. I just don't want to get there and not be able to have it fit. Everybody in my group wants an 8 person tent and I wasn't that worried about it until my friend didn't think it was going to work. She doesn't want to inconvenience the people camping next to us which is totally fair. Do you guys think we could make it work? I'm just frustrated because most people with four people have two cars and I'm sure we could all fit an 8 person tent if we had two plots of land but we don't We also have an EZ up but don't mind putting part of it over top of the tent. What do you guys think?
