Arctic Monkeys will most definitely be headlining major US festivals during their next touring cycle. Depending on the success of their new album its possible Tame Impala will be moving higher up on lineups soon as well.
As much as I love Phoenix, and think their live show is incredible, I dont think they'll get the popularity to headline festivals again. Wolfgang was a success, but their back catalog and Bankrupt sold very poorly. I fear they will follow the path of MGMT and Foster the People in terms of festivals - never again a headliner but always in that second/third line.
And god I hope Vampire Weekend doesnt start headlining major fests. I cant stand them haha.

If Phoenix puts out another commercially and critically successful album, I think they can jump back into the headliner discussion. I don't think they will ever fall off quite as much as MGMT (it doesn't help that MGMT's last two albums have been complete busts). As for Vampire Weekend, the writing's on the wall. They headlined Gov Ball last year and were top 5 at Roo. Unless something goes horribly wrong, I think they will make the jump to major festival headliner the next time around.
Predicting future headliners is a waste of time. I believe that Tame Impala and Animal Collective are current bands that can be elevated to that next level within a few years, but you just never know. Some Oscar-worthy, indie movie could feature a lengthy discussion between two youths about how Beach House is the greatest band of all time and boom they are headlining. Everything is so subjective to the culture at the time. No one could have imagined that Sam Smith playing his first US festival date at Bonnaroo (in a tent at 1:00 pm) would headline Forecastle and Hangout this year. While the legendary artist fade away, reunions and rare bands will provide most the excitement for most festivals in the future.
Vampire Weekend will most definitely be headlining major festivals sometime in the next four years. Three near-perfect albums and widespread critical acclaim, I think they deserve it. If Pheonix's next album is even half decent, I think they deserve to headline, just because of the incredible show they put on. I don't think the National has the theatrics or the popularity to headline a major festival. And as for Arctic Monkeys, they've taken the Kings of Leon and Black Keys route to achieve popularity and will probably headline a major fest on their next tour. I do belive young acts like Mumford, Kendrick, and Florence deserve to headline major fests, with alt-J and Tame Impala in the next five years doing the same. Acts like Arcade Fire, Jack White, Muse, and The Strokes, are able, and rightfully so, to headline any fest they want until they're just not trying anymore. Maybe we'll see bands like Weezer, Modest Mouse, Pixies, or even the Shins get to top-5 status in the coming years. Like someone else said, every year can't be Daft Punk - Radiohead - Paul McCartney.
I think you're spot on except for this. I loved AM. I think just because it was popular and on the radio a lot doesn't mean it was KoLish. The songs were good and people liked listening to them.

Its easier to say a band won't be a headliner in the future than a band will be a headliner in the future, simply because the odds always favor the former.
Having said that, the following bands, mentioned in the past few posts, will never headline major festivals (at least again, in some cases):
Phoenix The National Alt-J Weezer Modest Mouse The Pixies The Shins Animal Collective Cage The Elephant
I know we are just spitballing in this thread, not trying to pick on anyone, but none of the above bands will ever hold down a headlining spot on the What. Please feel free to quote me and expose my ignorance if I turn out to be wrong.
I don't like Tame Impala nearly as much as everyone else around here, but they have a unique and cool sound. Get a hit album or two under their belts and its possible.
I was going crazy after MVITC and insisting Vampire Weekend would be headlining festivals the summer following its release, and I was wrong. I suppose it could still happen, they are very talented songwriters.
Arctic Monkeys definitely could, because they rock.

I still stand by Sam Smith being an awful choice as a headliner. Is he a bad booking on your lineup? Not at all. Does his music suck? It's not my favorite but it's not bad. But the guy has one 32 minute album, and his live show just isn't the bang you want to end the night on imo. He may prove me wrong and just own the festivals he's headlining, but I really just find him to be way too high on these lineups.

I definitely agree that none of these will headline the What. But for medium caliber fests (Hangout, Firefly, Gov Ball, etc.) Phoenix especially could headline those. I'm not biased in saying this, I enjoy their music but I don't worship them or anything, I just think they have a big enough fan base to fill a main stage to close the night. That being said, I definitely think they'll be the third name on a lineup, with a couple bigger name in front of them (Macca, Radiohead, Prince)

But I do think alt-J will be headlining major fests in the coming years. Their lives shows are getting better and better, they subbed for Jack White this year at Coachella and they dont sound like many other acts.

I love Animal Collective with all my heart, but I have to agree, they'll never headline a major festival. They could absolutely headline a smaller, more boutique festival such as Levitation, but I don't ever see them breaking into the headliner market for the large fests. Panda Bear (solo) was already listed in the #4 slot for Psych Fest last year.
I guess I'm not really adding much. I really just wanted to talk about Animal Collective, and put the thought out to the universe that they should headline Levitation next year

Vampire Weekend? REALLY? Talk about a band that will never, ever reach headliner popularity level, that's it. Sure, they might headline some indie fest, or creep into the 5th or 6th position on a poster with real headliners... but they have exactly zero interest from a large portion of the population.
Arctic Monkeys, on the other hand, took their raucous British streetfight dance music and blended it with sultry sex and ended up legit headliners. If they put out another good record they'll be headliners across the world.
Or, to put it another way... women want to fuck Alex Turner and men want to be him. Nobody wants to fuck Ezra Koenig. (Except some percentage of hipster librarians, gay or straight)
And Queens of the Stone Age = headliner next album release. Without question.

I agree with most of what you said, but not The National. If they *decided* to put out an album that has some pop ebb and flow, they would bounce into the pop charts and end up headlining no problem. They have a frontman who knows how to put on a show and a deep setlist - all they need is one album to bring in the masses.

Surely, you can't be serious? Congratulations, this is one of the dumbest posts I've ever read on Inforoo.

Too bad Vampire Weekend has already headlined a festival. And they were billed 5th at Roo last year.

Lies. VW's headlining a major fest within three years (depending on your view of GovBall you could say they already have). Also of note: they were 5th at Roo 2014.
They won't "creep into the 5th or 6th position", they're already there.

They already are. See: they've headlined Glasto twice. Once after only two albums.
On Glastonbury, Glasto should not be used as a barometer for headliners at an American festival. Kasabian has headlined Glasto. They were 4th or 5th line at Coach this year.

Good god, tomservo. That might be the single least intelligent paragraph I have read in my life. Vampire Weekend WILL headline a major fest in 2016 or 2017, and it's not because of how fuckable Ezra Koenig is. P.S. No one is attacking QOTSA or Arctic Monkeys, they're both top 5 worthy at any festival.

Also, I am a 100% straight male, and I still think Ezra Koenig is fuckable and would totally not mind looking like him.
Ezra is the guy you would introduce to your dad and they'd bond over a game of golf on the weekends. Alex is the guy that you erase your text messages from in fear of your dad finding out about him.

Ezra is the guy who will delightfully argue with you that Rushmore is Wes Anderson's best film, while Alex is the guy who will argue with you for buying him the wrong hair gel, then slap you.
