This may be an incorrect generalization on my part, but I've found that it tends to not get quite as rough in pits at punk shows.
Definitely less of those people out to try and injure people. More professional, if you will.
My experience has been the pit for older metal acts is normally pretty friendly but the pit for new metal acts have assbags looking to hurt people. Punk pits are normally pretty friendly overall. Just my experience though not a generalization.
Yeah, I've taken donkey kicks to chest and full blown punches to the face. The craziest crowd I have ever been a part of is and will forever be at Agnostic Front. Only one other friend of mine has ever seen them and oddly enough we both went by ourselves to different shows. But, it was the craziest thing I've ever seen, it was basically just a 30 man fist fight. After making it out of that one alive, though severely beaten, I now believe I can take on any pit. FIDLAR at Shaky Knees a few weeks ago was pretty crazy, but it was a punk show, so everyone was nice and looking out for each other. The fact that Slayer is at Roo makes me think it won't be TOO crazy but it's still a Slayer show. Also, on the topic of roo pits, Death Grips in 2013 was absolutely ridiculous too!

I just saw FIDLAR open for Metz and it was insane! Their music really makes moshing and crowd surfing happen. Its almost like they think of that when they are writing. There a mellow points to give the crowd a break then not much later it gets crazy again. I hope the Shaky Knees crowd was into it because at the small club I saw them at the couple hundred people that were there were going nuts. It was a lot of fun. I may even like them more than Diarrhea Planet now
I was also at the Death Grips 13 show. That was crazy
Honorable mention to Cloud Nothings and Ty Segal from last year

Oh, the Shaky crowd was definitely into it. Because of my grafted skin on my leg/foot being so delicate, my shoe came off in the pit and it was on asphalt and I just chose to find my shoe once the pit died down, I am still working on healing up a big gash on the arch of my foot. But, it was totally worth it (though most would probably disagree.) The singer actually stopped after like four songs and said "You guys need to pace yourselves, man!" Because everyone was getting so crazy as soon as the show started but everyone just kept going.

I put my glasses in my front pocket because I knew it was gonna get rowdy. After a song or two I reach to my pocket to feel nothing in it. I instantly panic and envision in my dead everyone stomping all over my stuff and it being destroyed. Someone behind me saw me panic looking on the floor and handed me my phone unscathed. Later in the night someone comes up to me and says they have been looking for me and hand me my glasses. They were in one piece but were scratched up. I couldn't believe I got my stuff back, I was so lucky. So if you go see FIDLAR make sure your shoes and all your belongings are all well secured
I work with a 22 year old guy who came to work with a HUUUUUGE shiner....he had been moshing at a metal show and some guy "accidently" punched him in the eye... He showed me some YouTube videos of people moshing and all I could think was it looked like those nature videos of deer head butting during mating season...

When I was a much younger chick, I would mosh all time time. UNTIL, Mr. Bungle... the heavy music went to slow, that then went back to super heavy. We were in the back of the Howlin Wolf (which is now the Republic). Everyone was standing still, so my friend Eric started jumping up and down screaming, "what is wrong with y'all? Did the switch of music fuck you up? You should be slammin'!" The whole floor opened up, I got pushed forward and kicked in the head by a Doc Martin. I ended up punching the girl that kicked me (because she did so intentionally) and had to go all the way to the wall and sit down. I had a lump the size of an egg, and a concussion. I don't mind pits and have participated but when you aren't in the pit and get pushed into it and purposely kicked in the face, it tends to turn you off of getting back in the pit.
EDIT: I will never forget her smirk and shrug after she kicked my face... That fucking bitch deserved more than the broken nose she got in return.

I think that the most intense pit I was ever in was either Bad Brains in 92 or Rage Against The Machine in 93. That was a different era for sure.

Yeah that was in like 94 as well. Pits ain't got nothing on the early 90s.
I seen Decapitated headlining some death metal fest-tour in 2010, and people were kicking and punching each other in the face down in the mosh pit. I stayed towards the back of the room as that stuff went down.
I seen High on Fire and Bison B.C. at a small club (also in 2010), was kinda drunk and ended up getting knocked down in the pit much of the time.

There was some pit action for Bad Brains and Flogging Molly a few years back, too. Too much space opened up for it to be much of a pit, though.
On the rail for Bad Brains at Roo (I even got their setlist which was thr main goal). It was decently good but nothing comparfed to Dillingers Escape Plan. When the lead singer, and both guitar players jumped into the crowd, I thought the damn tent might go down too!

I was about 3 rows behind you at pelican and bad brains, saw your horns. Lol. Wasnt at Dillinger to compare but 4th row bad brains was a crazy hour
Just read all of page 7...am I high or is this the wrong thread? I thought no one ever posted shit in the wrong thread on Inforoo. Let's get back on track. It's gonna be sunny at times. It's gonna rain some. It may be just slightly cool at night. It's gonna be hot and muggy at times during the day, especially in the What field. There. This thread is fixed.
I do not understand the words coming out of your mouth.

You're way too fucking high, man. You should probably just turn the computer and step away from it for a while

Maybe not the most "intense," but definitely the biggest fuckin' pit I've ever seen was actually durin' a Sevendust set at my first or second "festival" (the ol' HFStival of 99.1 WHFS fame in the DC/Metro area of yore, most popular from the '90's through the early 2000's). It was at RFK Stadium and durin' their song "Waffle" it seemed like a solid third of the floor of the stadium was moshin'.
