I'm not a Hozier fan, but I wouldn't call him a bad guitarist. He does exactly what's required of his music, which isn't much. Just because he never plays anything virtuosic or or impressive doesn't really make him bad. Just nothing remotely special or interesting. But I know it's super fun to hate on him here.
Also just add Taylor Goldmsmith from Dawes to your list and you've pretty much nailed it
I just kind of threw in Hozier as a joke. I'm sure he is a decent guitarist for what he does. I just really fucking hate his music. I'm not familiar with Dawes, but I'll add Goldsmith to my list because I've seen his name thrown around in this thread a couple of times. Maybe I'll have to check Dawes out!
He is drumming with Atomic Bomb! but I felt his guitar playing in LCD is worth noting.
Are you sure he played guitar in LCD? I only remember him drumming.
Edit: he's not credited on guitar on any of their albums
You're right. I need to get my facts straight. He played guitar in some of Shut Up and Play the Hits so I thought he was their guitar player. Tyler Pope was their guitarist. Also I'd highly recommend Shut Up and Play the Hits to any rockumentary fan, LCD fan, or someone getting interested in LCD. I think it's on Netflix.
Is this a poll of who you like the best or who is the best? I've been playing for 20 years, and I can tell you if you picked anyone besides John Scofield, you should buy a guitar, try playing, and then shove said guitar straight up your butt as a punishment for being a complete fool.
I saw a user in another thread request this so I figured I'd post it. My early vote goes to Gary Clark Jr. simply because I'm not familiar with most of the other guitarists on the lineup.
Thanks Jazmo! This really just made my day. I definitely figured GCJ and Scofield would get all the love. They really are amazing players. I love seeing this thread to see who I haven't heard though.
Once again, the best guitarist is left off the list. Watch and learn...
Paul Waggoner- Between the Buried and Me
He's no Scofield, but yeah he is fucking awesome. And BtBaM is awesome live. Great metal addition to the farm. Anyone at that show will not be disappointed
Taylor Goldsmith from Dawes John Scofield Chris Eldridge from Punch Brothers
But really Gary Clark Jr. is probably the best. I wish his set wasn't so close to MMJ's
Yeah, that's a bummer. I won't be able to see him, I was really hoping to see what he has live. I can't get into his studio work that much even though he's an awesome player
Also, I don't listen to Dawes at all, but I'm curious now. Where should I start if I'm looking for some good guitar songs?

For Dawes I'd recommend their second album, Nothing Is Wrong, although most of his best guitar work is done live and they unfortunately don't have a live album.
Gary Clark Jr. on the other hand does have a live album that came out last year and I'd definitely recommend giving it a listen
Gary Clark Jr. It's a shame his set is so short. What's he gonna play in an hour? Like four songs?
His live album runs about an hour and 30 minutes and it has 15 songs, So 8-9 would be a conservative guess assuming he plays his well known tracks then maybe a cover.

I actually don't have any of their albums yet, but I really enjoyed all of Dawes' Daytrotter sessions. I'd recommend all of those if you happen to have a Daytrotter account.
In no particular order --- *Gary Clark Jr. (by default) *Jim James! -- My Morning Jacket (surprised no one has said him yet) *John Scofield -- Medeski, Scofield, Martin, & Wood *D'Angelo (RnB Jesus can SHRED) *Jesse Johnson -- D'Angelo's guitarist (formally of The Time) *Kerry King -- Slayer *Taylor Goldsmith -- Dawes *Britt Daniel -- Spoon *Adam Granduciel -- The War on Drugs *Ryan Young -- Trampled by Turtles' fiddle player (felt he should be in here because he actually was a guitarist of a speed metal band and fucking incredible at the fiddle) *Chris Thile -- Punch Brothers' ringleader and mandolin player (not a guitar player, but one of the greatest mandolin players ever) *Laura Jane Grace & Adam Bowman -- Against Me! (maybe not technically 'great' players but awesome punk rock guitarists) *Benjamin Booker (Jack White fans look no further to Booker. as blues-punky as it gets since The White Stripes) *Malcolm Brickhouse -- Unlocking the Truth (this kid absolutely blew my mind when UtT was on Colbert)
Worst Guitarist --- *Hozier
EDIT: Added Taylor Goldsmith, removed Pat Mahoney
I love Jim James but Carl is a much better guitarist.
Scofield definitely might be the more seasoned guitarist, but (and this is just from videos I've seen - sadly haven't gotten to see GCJ live before), I say Gary Clark is hands down the most entertaining guitar talent to watch. I mean, watch the solo that starts a little before 2:00 here: this guy is so fucking in the zone, it is mesmerizing.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

I like what Taylor does on this song at around the 5:40 mark. There are other live clips of Fire Away where he plays a better solo, but I like this one because it's in a barn. Kind of like bacon's
Scofield, technically speaking I'm very comfortable picking Scofield. That being said my favorite drummer is Stewart Copeland but I believe that Joey Baron is the greatest living drummer alive today. Technically speaking I think Scofield is the correct answer even if not the most favored.
