Eh, I have no problem with anyone liking Awolnation or Twenty One Pilots. While I think they put out borderline terrible music, taste in music is subjective, and it's pretty clear that many Americans enjoy listening to them. That being said, I think the primary reason for the "backlash" is the hyperbolic praise the OP has given Awolnation. Also, it doesn't help that the OP was having major difficulties writing a coherent sentence.
I admit that I have terrible taste in music. I admitted that a long time ago...when I was 14 and obsessed with the Backstreet Boys, to be exact, haha.
And Kanye. Don't forget Kanye. Nothing causes a backlash of hate around here like not recognizing Kanye for the genius he is.
I'm also a kanye lover. My music taste just keeps getting worse.
According to who? I hope you don't really think the band's you like are terrible. That would be self-deprecating. You'll offend a whole other classification of music snobs by liking Kanye. You'll have both the anti-Kanye and the anti-Awol/Pilots crowds judging you now.
But, really, how do you feel about My Morning Jacket?

this is how inforoo feels about them
I'm seriously dead. That's the funniest shit I've listened to in a long time, haha.

I'm only joking when I make statements about my awful taste in music. Music is different for everyone and I make no qualms about what I listen to. I actually listen to a bunch of different things depending on my mood. I listen to it all day at work, to and from work, and if I went a day without music I would have a miserable day. There aren't many people that I think are horrible. I used to hate taylor swift but after recently being dumped for the first time in my life, her music made sense and I find myself bolting the lyrics. The only thing I'm embarrassed about is my short love affair with Hanson.
MMJ is still new to me. I have a spotify list for them and they are growing on me. It's not that i hate them, it's just I never heard of them before joining inforoo.

HOW DARE YOU HEIDI!!!!!!!!!!
I am team nsync all day every day.
I was a diehard BSB fan. Wore their shirts, had my walls covered in their pictures, strictly listened to their music, and verbally assaulted anyone who had anything negative to say about them. Looking back, it was truly an embarrassing time in my life.
there is shame in dumping on Mumford & Sons while flying the flag for the Avett Brothers or something.
Why? When there are two bands of a similar genre why is there shame in holding them to different levels?
Agreed. I'm not a huge Avetts fan but they're definitely head and shoulders above Mumford to me (or at least they used to be.) Their early albums had unique song structure, varied lyrical topics and a lot of personality from song to song.
They've kind of mellowed out and all the songs on their last two albums sound the same, but there are many good songs in the first half of their career.

This is kind of what I mean. It's popular to dump on Mumford or the Lumineers because they make radio-friendly, pop-folk/grass/whatever. But bands like the Avetts do, or attempt to do, the exact same thing. If anything, they're just less successful at writing interesting chord progressions and memorable hooks than their more popular peers. The only real difference is that one is more popular than the other - please take note of the fact that the Mumfords were totally the best thing going when they appeared at Bonnaroo in 2010. A few years later, without a noticeable depreciation in the quality of their music, they were a popular target, for no other reason than they were popular now. If the Avetts ever start having radio hits they'd suffer the same fate.
I like a few Lumineers songs. Didn't mention them. But it sounds like you're equating popularity with a band's worth. I don't fault Mumford for riding Little Lion Man and The Cave to massive success. Many, many bands don't hit the success that those two songs gave Mumford. I've listened to both Mumford albums and not been grabbed while finding several songs on Emotionalism and I & Love & You by Avett Brothers that I really loved. That's all there is to it. One band grabbed me and the other didn't, so I think less of them.

As someone learning to play the banjo, mumford is what I aspire to play one day but personally, I love avett brothers more. I love them both, but the avett brothers just have something I can't put a name on. Lately, I've been obsessed with trampled by turtles. It's not exactly the same kind of music but it kind of is. I do love a fast banjo though.

You should pick up this DVD if you don't already have it.

You're getting into a tangent here unrelated to what I was discussing, though. Liking both but thinking one is preferable is fine. It's even fine to like the Avetts and not particularly like Mumford, because obviously personal preferences vary. What I'm talking about, and what I think is ridiculous, is when someone who is a fan of one dumps all over the other, usually as a way of showing what a DEEP SOUL they are or whatever the fuck. That's all.
I do that a lot. I see your point. I guess I'm not one of those people you speak of.
"I say we rob from the rich and blow down the door. On to the next to dance with the poor. Jump on my shoulders. You can jump on my shoulders. We rob from the rich and blow down the door. On to the next to dance with the poor. Jump on my shoulders. You can jump on my shoulders.
La la la la la la la la La la la la la la la la La la la la la la la la"
This is my favorite. In an interview he said the evils of the world and social media influenced the lyrics of the record. What was the specific evil you ask?
Q: Were there any world events or personal events in your life that influenced the lyrics to the album?
A: "Yeah. Not necessarily events, but me sort of opening my eyes in the last three years to true history and the way our world has been built and the way it really is rather than what all the major media corporations feed us. I would say that was a heavy, heavy component to my questioning of things and truly wondering what was going on. And just naturally feeling like there's a lot of evil in the world and it seems like in this day and age with social media and the Internet and stuff.
When I was in sixth or seventh grade, the idea of finding pornography was absurd. We would be at bike tracks, going off these jumps, and in this bush some dude would've left the box cover to a porno movie. Nowadays, kids can just go on the Internet and blow their minds. And that blows my mind. I would have to search so far to find any sort of dirty material as a kid and it's not like that now."
Yup. The evils of the world involves kids being able to find porn easier than he could when he was a kid. And the blow my mind quote is Dylanesque.
