Post by Hannah. Does anyone have any old costumes that they aren't using this year? I'm a newbie and I really have no idea where to being with the costume thing. I'm not really into the rave girl thing so..

You can make a costume out of anything, like this year i will be Iron man in a bathrobe. Just have fun with it.
One tradition you DON'T want to be a part of is be one of those people who are wasted and passed out randomly or throwing up in the grass on WEDNESDAY.
I enjoyed the random people who came up and yelled "HAPPY BONNAROO" and gave high fives. I expected a lot more high fives but only really got them at the arch.
I was That Guy my first year. Well, I lasted until Saturday. Passed under a neighbor's EZ Up mid-afternoon and woke up during the Dead, covered in vomit. Good times.
Which brings me to this piece of advice: Do Not Drink During The Day. Wait until sunset 'cause the sun is gonna kick your ass...
Every Thursday morning when we first get in and finally get our camp site set up we always get going on the drinking so we can have a nice buzz before our first Roo nap of the weekend.

I bought some cheap masks on amazon and I'm recycling a maid lingerie outfit one night for late night. The crazier, the better.
There seems to be something of a tradition at every music festival I've been to in my short seven years of attending festivals that I'm really not fond of and since the OP seems genuinely curious, I'll write for all to read. Music festivals are one of the few places in the world where you can go and get hit or stepped on by another person and have it really not be that big of a deal. You can high five, hug, shake hands with strangers even mosh and throw your body at one another and not even think twice about it. This is awesome and I love it. On the other hand, people assume that everyone is occupying the same mental age of indifference about space and respect. I've grown to expect to be inadvertently hit by someone or many many someones as they're navigating through the crowd. I barely even notice it anymore because it's sort of an occupational hazard, if you will. That said, not everyone feels that way. In fact, I would reckon that most people, especially those who haven't been to many festivals and certainly people who have never been before will be pretty upset that you essentially just squared your shoulders and seemingly pushed right through them to move fifteen feet through a crowd. Most people are ultimately willing to let it slide, but you just hit another person. Sure, it happens, but don't just keep walking. Turning around in a crowd of tens of thousands of people can be scary and overwhelming sometimes, but you might be the first person to apologize to that person that day. You'd be surprised how far an "Oh shit, sorry dude," comment goes. The inter-personal, physical hit-and-runs need to stop, I'm tired of seeing people around me get sad or irritated because some dick just barreled through without saying sorry, turning around, or making eye contact. By the way, whenever I see this sad tradition continue, I get weirdly communal with the people around me and we all talk about how much of a dick that person is. Also, whenever people do that shit to me or someone nearby me, I will always and without fail call you out on it and make you feel bad until you apologize or at least turn around.
tl;dr Yo, there's this endless tradition of people tirelessly being "that guy" and it makes other people sad; that shit needs to stop.

YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! I get that you want to be as close as possible to see a group you like (though i don't know why since you have no room the closer you get). but if you are bumping in to some one and/or accidentally jumping in front of someone just say excuse me or i'm sorry. It's really frustrating when a train of people have to squeeze in somewhere or have to walk single file right in front of me as i'm trying to walk somewhere else. Hell before a concert even starts, i'll let people around me know that i am sorry if i bump in to them dancing or anything. Do wish more people would see this.

One person pushing through a crowd.....fine. Whatever. Get a better spot....find your friends. Go.
One person pushing through a crowd and then linking hands with 5 other friends and pushing all of your way through a crowd to get a better spot? Have some basic consideration. We all want to be closer. Some of us got here early to get the good spot we are in. Don't force your way through with a large group because you think you're a bigger fan or some shit.
Not sure where else to post this question, so here it goes.
Does anyone crowd surf anymore? It's understandable why women don't. When I was younger I only weighed 150 and you couldn't keep me on the ground for most shows lol. I've probably done it 50-60 times. I'd think Roo would be the perfect place to do it. Almost everyone's awesome, I can't think of any tent that doesn't have grass instead of concrete to land on. Instead, everyone now is holding up their fkn phones, WHICH I FKN H.A.T.E.
Ya, I've seen a person here and there do it, but does it seem to other people crowd surfing isn't as common these days?
Oh, and my personal tradition is to bring three 6 packs of decent booze. One for each of my neighbors =)

If i want to get closer and need to press through people to get there I always acknowledge the people I'm moving between with a friendly "excuse me" or "pardon me" BEFORE I start moving past/between them. Since we're on the topic of customs which show poor manners - please lower your custom made sign pole thing. Nothing annoys me more than someone who is a good 50 feet in front of me yet STILL blocking my view of the stage.

I skipped Jack White to get a good spot for the Skrillex Superjam last year (big mistake in hindsight). The show was supposed to have started at this point, and I'm about 20 feet from the stage, so it's packed shoulder to shoulder. This guy and his buddy following him just start pushing through the crowd saying "EXCUSE ME, SORRY, EXCUSE ME". This other guy that was standing near me (also a scumbag but that's a different story) gets in his way and says "Hey man you can try to go around but we've been waiting here for a while" and the guy pushing through just says "Well, I'm getting to the front whether you like it or not so..." and just pretty much shoved him out of the way and kept making his way to the front. Everyone around was visibly upset, some people were even booing him, and he just kept going. I honestly couldn't believe it.

I wasn't there last year but I definitely saw crowd surfing in 2013 especially during Death Grips. I assume it's still pretty common depending on the artist.

Tame Impala. Bonnaroo. 2013. I've never seen so many people crowd surfing in my entire life.

Yea, those kind of people are the worst. I legit saw someone break down in tears and freak out on a group of people while we were all waiting for a Superjam to start. First they tried pushing through people to get close after many of us had been waiting over an hour. Then they kept "bumping" into her back to the point where it was clear they weren't accidentally hitting her. She freaked out and some of us had to chime in and tell these guys what assholes they were being. Thankfully, they weren't complete assholes like the person you're describing and they backed off/apologized.
I've been close to snapping at some points. When someone can be reasonable that's fine. When someone says "I'm getting there whether you like it or not" then that person is a complete prick and shouldn't be allowed at shows.
The first person who yells this in my presence this year wins a lifetime supply of deep burning hate.
I HATE Family Guy, so my hatred of the stupid fucking "Buttscratchaaaaa" is quite strong. Typically when I hear it, the person gets an evil eye from me.

I would love to be inside the head of people like that. What in their minds gives them the right to plow to the front? Be a normal human and wait if it's that important to you.
More people need to start publicly berating/shaming people like that. Maybe we can get a few of them to stop.
What do I do if I want to be rail for a show? I get there early like a civilized person.

Matt and Kim in 2013 may have had the most crowd surfing since the high-water mark of Fishbone performing "Swim" at Lollapalooza in 1993. It was an endless wave of crowd surfers completely independent of any music going on, encouraged by Matt and Kim, of course...
EDIT: Based on the related posts, it seems that 2013 was a big year for crowd surfing.

Just wear your suit, birthday variety. Everyone's doing it.
Every Thursday morning when we first get in and finally get our camp site set up we always get going on the drinking so we can have a nice buzz before our first Roo nap of the weekend.
WARNING: Roo day drinking, especially on Thursday, is for experienced professionals only. And I can't wait.
