Unfortunately I just remembered that the Lumineers are working on a new album...
this sucks mad dick. but i hope we get them. they can be a huge draw that I can see somebody else during.
Makes sense. I liked how easy it was to get in the pit for The War On Drugs this year while everyone was over at Hozier. Although trying to work my way over to the What field while they were all leaving was difficult
People's dislike for the Lumineers is weird. They're a great pop-folk act.
I usually agree with you, but you totally lost me on this one. Especially since you just yesterday called Alabama Shakes "painfully boring" and "massively overrated".

Are their albums good? I only really knew the singles and a few live performances I've seen here and there. I do know that one of the guys loves the Felice Brothers and called them inspiring so I like them a a little bit. Are they worth checking out, considering I'm into a lot of folk/americana/acoustic stuff? I wasn't thrilled with their huge single whatever the HEY song is but that's been the case with a ton of acts I've eventually become a fan of.
and I recognize that there is value in crafting a well-honed pop single.
There's a few great moments in the Wilco documentary "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" where Jeff Tweedy talks about how difficult it is to make a big pop single or a "radio hit" and how he doesn't understand what it takes to make something that will definitely catch on. It's a good amount of skill and also a little bit of luck/timing. I believe there were parts about how the label would want him to submit some songs that would be good radio singles and he didn't know what that really meant. I'd have to re-watch it again but there were definitely elements of "it's not easy to make a pop/radio hit".
I don't hate The Lumineers, but I have no interest in them and they'd take up a big spot on the lineup that could go to someone I like. It was the same issue I had with Hozier on the lineup this year.
On a positive Lumineers note, this cover is pretty good

I also recall reading a piece from Chuck Klosterman where he hung out with Tweedy, and Tweedy's kid was just learning to play drums, and was in a group with other kids where all they played were songs by the group Jet (the "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" dudes). Klosterman made some crack about how the only people who should be enjoying Jet are 9 year old kids, and Tweedy just owns him, like "do you like rock and roll music? Well, then why wouldn't you like Jet?", causing Klosterman to shut his paternalistic and overwrought faux-intellectual pretension for a few minutes.
Haha, that's great. I found the part you are talking about.

Alabama Shakes are a mediocre roots-rock/faux-blues-rock band which skate by on image, and a weirdly cultish devotion to Brittany Howard's over-emotive yowling. The Lumineers are a folk-pop/pop-folk act that writes great pop songs. Simple as that. Unlike most people on this board, I don't discriminate against a band simply because they're accepted and/or celebrated by the mainstream, and I recognize that there is value in crafting a well-honed pop single.
I don't quite know what's come over me the past few days, but I've been finding myself agreeing with almost everything you say - I definitively believe The Lumineers>Alabama Shakes and also strongly concur that discrimination against a band due to their popularity or mainstream acceptance is really silly and not at all the way that I determine what I do and do not musically enjoy and respect.
7 out of 7 days of the week, I am way more apt to turn on a Lumineers song than Alabama Shakes. They have a more interesting sound and vibe, in my opinion. Simple as that.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

So perfect.
I'd love to see a 2nd grade band covering Cold Hard Bitch

But seriously, that song fucking sucks. Why does radio still play it so much?

I liked their album and they were good live. I don't like them as much as Alabama Shakes though.

Hate it. Andrea and I have a running joke with this every time we turn on the radio it's on. Again? Really? Why? Even at roo we heard it a couple times.

What I really don't get is everyone's hatred for the Lumineers yet Of Monsters and Men seem to be on every wishlist
I like the Lumineers and thought they were pretty great at Roo in 2013. There are certainly much worse options that can be booked
I personally go with Alabama Shakes> of monsters and men> the lumineers I don't think the lumineers are great but I liked their first album. Almost as much as the other two's debut albums. I just wonder how their second album will be.

I don't think either one stands out above the other. Both had decent but not great debut albums and both caught the rising tide of indie-folk popularity at the right time. Personally, I prefer Of Monsters and Men because I think their sound on My Head Is an Animal is more interesting and diverse. That being said, I also think their new album is pretty damn boring and underwhelming.
Of Monsters and Men>Lumineers>Alabama Shakes for me.
But as is evident, I prefer the style/sound of oMaM and Lumineers to that of the Shakes - I'm not going to argue that those two are way more talented than the Shakes, just that I prefer them.

Of Monsters and Men were pretty average to me until I saw them live. They blew me away and then the next time I saw them was even better. Unfortunately when I saw them this year a bit of that magic seemed to be gone, partially because they played a lot of new material before the album had come out. I love the sound OMAM have on their new album, but I think the songwriting could be a lot stronger.
I've never seen Lumineers live, but I'm sure I'd enjoy them if I did, I just can't get super into them and I don't know if they could wow me the way OMAM and Alabama Shakes have

What I don't get is why people lump Of Monsters & Men in with stuff like The Lumineers. Have you listened to them? They don't sound alike at all.
