I'm still pissed off. The first 45 mins were killer even with the deep cuts but it seemed like he lost it somewhere in there. Overheated maybe? Usually he tells little stories, anecdotes, jokes, etc and he stopped that altogether.
I don't know what happened but getting cheated out of 45 minutes of a headliner (he did 8 fewer songs than when I saw him in Louisville last year) who happens to be one of my all-time favorite acts left a really bad taste in my mouth. Especially because I had gotten so close.
Not to mention the fucked up timing of the fireworks.

I didn't think the songs or set was bad...but I did think the sound was terrible. Other shows had much better mixing and I was in near the same spot every time.
I had fun, sang my ass off. Dude was sweating profusely minutes in, wouldn't be surprised if he cut things a little shorter because of heat. I'm guessing he doesn't perform outside in 90% humidity often. He still pushed 2 hours overall and did an encore (I mean, maybe you call it a 1st set and a 2nd set or something but he left the stage, the fans cheered and he came back and did more songs).
To clarify my position: I thought he sounded good, I think the crowd was good and engaged. I was just thoroughly surprised that he wrapped up well before 11.
Crowds were unnapreciative at every show. It was like these people had never been to a concert before. Brittany Howard was visibly pissed off and didn't do her encore cause no one cheered worth a damn after she shook the earth with her voice. No one sang fucking piano man. PIANO MAN GOD DAMNIT. IT WAS SILENT WHEN BILLY STOPPED SINGING AND EXPECTED US TO JOIN IN. I want to blame the heat for the lack of enthusiasm but it was an issue at night clearly too. I won't be back to roo unless it someday reverts back to what it was.
1. Alabama Shakes were great, and Howard seemed grateful for the move from Thursday Tent (2012, which was amazing) to Thursday Pre-HL What. They didn't do an encore because they ran out of time and that no one really does encores except headliners. I've seen maybe one encore on a non-headliner, non-LN act in 5 years at Bonnaroo.
2. I was directly to the right of the sound booth for Billy Joel and the crowd was deafening for Piano Man. Even the stuffy folks up in that VIP area next to the sound board were standing and singing loudly.
From what I could see/hear on the live stream... Yes, lots and lots of people sang Piano Man when he let the crowd take over. I could hear it just fine. He looked sick... or exhausted... or something. I didn't notice anything seriously wrong until he came back out and went straight into Uptown Girl and partway through, he got off key from his backups like whoa, and stayed there for the rest of the song. He mixed up some words in It's Still Rock & Roll To Me, but I forgive him for that. It happens.
I feel like there must have been something wrong with the sound he was receiving, or he was really unwell, or both...
I don't know if it came through on the livestream, but he was getting some pretty piercing feedback like once every 10 minutes or so. It was clearly annoying him, and probably threw him from his game a little bit.
I thought Billy must of been sick or had a migraine or something. The way he introduced the band members between songs, it was just so flat, there was nothing there.
I've never seen him before so I don't know what he's usually like.
I've seen Billy Joel probably a dozen times, and honestly that's just what you get sometimes. It sucks, but there are definitely times where the show is short and he's not all that engaged. The good nights are about 2:15-2:30, but there are definitely nights under 2 hours where he's just going through the motions. Sucks that it was at Roo.
Me: Did you say Retarded Steve was playing tonight? Boo: No, I have a speech impediment. I said that Retarded Steve is playing. www.411mania.com/siteimages/jcs logo_25254.jpg[/img] Check out Jam Central Station on Facebook on.fb.me/bT2xQx and @jamcentral411 on Twitter

Gotta love the VIP hill.
However, I was referring to the ones set off at 11:45. Around when he should have ended.

Those are the ones I mean. Was a box of starbursts that someone set off. They were so low we got hit with pieces of them
That guy has been doing that for several years. I was unfortunate to be literally right next to him at the end of Elton last year. All he did was light the thing then yell "EVERYBODY GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE WAY, ITS LIT!" There was a guy in my group that time that has PTSD, and I'm surprised he didn't beat the shit out of this guy. It's actually pretty scary this guy can consistently smuggle in that big of an explosive device into Centeroo...

His set was 1 hour 50 minutes. Not great but not bad. A 10 min version of NY state of mind to end it might have helped.
I liked how we weren't allowed to walk under the arch until Sunday after Billy. It's like AC was forcing us to do his bidding by banning the most traditional thing about roo.

Man. I had planned for 6-7 months to propose on Thursday right under the arch going in the first time and it was closed. I kind of freaked out and just did it right inside to the right. Any idea why they did that?

Someone said it had something to do with people tearing apart the arch on Sunday last year, not sure if that is the reason.

And congratulations!
I was told by a security guy it was because they couldn't handle the rush of people that would have gone under the arch. Seems weird considering there are just as many people each year. Oh and people were taking parts of the arch on Sunday this year so I'm calling BS on that being the reason.

I experienced the exact opposite at the shows I attended. Crowds went nuts for RTJ, Flylo, Atomic Bomb, Belle and Sebastian, Slayer, Courtney Barnett, etc. Best crowds I've seen at Bonnaroo. One of my favorite moments of the fest was when the crowd would not allow flylo to stop. Coaxed him back to the stage 3 times I think.
I had a blast during the set, though it was definitely due in part to the people I was with. the only reason I'm annoyed he ended so early is because the prior acts on the schedule could have been spread out a bit more if he just started a bit later. AKA maybe I wouldn't have had to leave florence early to get to caribou.
and about the arch - if they didn't want people taking it apart then why the hell did they do the sequin decoration again?! you can't promote high five friday 51 days a year and then take away that very tradition....
I set on the ground the whole time wishing this set was over. And there was the awkward pause between the set ending, people not sure if it's ending, and like 10 minutes later the fireworks going off.

I mean, nobody was forcing you to sit there were they? Also, towards the front we knew pretty quickly that it was over because they started playing the house music, I'm guessing that couldn't be heard further back.

I was at Billy Joel against my will lol so yes, I was being forced. Wanted to say bye to people and spend as much time as I could before saying bye. Billy Joel was fine, it just wasn't for me.
