Getting a festival in NYC off the ground is hard enough already. Remember Googamooga?
Even if the audiences/acts are more pop/radio/mainstream or whatever it doesn't change all the stuff you were explaining about timing and location and the bubble popping. Surely if it was bad for 3 festivals to be within the same short time period (Gov Ball/Panorama/Firefly) then wouldn't it also be bad for this one to take the place of Panorama? I never thought it was going to be a problem either way but I don't know shit about the business side of things. I just figured if it's the same weekend at the same location then isn't that still music festival competition?
I think a larger company going out of their way to try and put a smaller company out of business and steal what they built
Is that all this was about? It wasn't about business at all and trying to get an NYC festival in June for AEG? How are they going out of their way? Don't they create and promote music festivals?

It just feels very much like AEG tried to buy Gov's Ball, were turned down, and then decided to put them out of business instead. It's deliberate aggression, and they could have done the festival in July or August or September. But it's capitalism, and they're 100% allowed to do it, dick move or not

Could they have? What if they wanted it in June for specific reasons (also why they wanted to invest in GovBall)? I'm not saying that's definitely the case I just don't see why the response should be "Well they should have it in a different month.....Governors Ball owns all of June". I get that Governors Ball has made a name for itself the past few years and I don't want it to go away any time soon but from my viewpoint this just seems like festival business.
Is it deliberate aggression? Or is it "Okay, well they don't want our money so now Plan B is to make our own NYC festival in June".

Having it in June certainly makes it easier for artists to play Hangout, Firefly, and NYFEST. Then again, if AEG had any class they'd clear the field for THE KING and just move Firefly to August too. And cancel Hangout, just because.

Apples and oranges. Panorama would be competition in terms of booking acts and selling tickets Both festivals would be financial failures. AEG is the bigger company so they'd be able to sustain losing money until they were the last ones standing.
The MSG event isn't competing in any area. The people who would go to that wouldnt go to a Gov Ball. Whether they fail or succeed it doesn't hurt anyone but themselves. Their business model isn't predicated on putting an established company out of business.
You say that as if it's a 100% sure thing but I'm not sold on that. I'd argue that it's surprising how varied people's music tastes can be, especially the ones who will spend a couple hundred dollars on a festival and put up with the conditions for it. I know plenty of people that would go to Governors Ball to see LCD Soundsystem and other similar names that would also go to catch Gwen Stefani or some other mainstream/radio shows at this new one.
I still think there are PLENTY of musical acts out there for there to be two festivals in June and have them both be successful. It's not like Panorama/AEG would take every act (though I understand they'd have more power/money to throw around).
If I was Governors Ball I would focus more time/energy on stacking the lineup with who is available to make it as great a lineup as possible (regardless of the other festivals possibly happening). The way things have come across so far from an outsiders standpoint is "Governors Ball whines about other companies trying to have a festival in June". But again....I don't know the business and have no actual knowledge of the GovBall/AEG war that's apparently happening.

Agreed that Gov's should just be trying to get a better lineup. By complaining about it, all they're saying is "We don't think we're good enough to handle competition." But speaking for myself, I'd be more likely to pay for two fests that offer two differing styles of music than two that offer the same. But if Panorama and Gov's Ball both happen I'll be happy. That would have to mean that almost every (non-headlining) act doing festivals this year would play NYC, which makes for a happy me.
There should be consequences to willy-nilly deleting your account, just to return 2 weeks later. And that consequence for Launchpad should be having to stare at this terrible thread title from now until June.
Bonnaroo never had a festival of similar size happening 10 min from their location, two weeks later, and competing for acts and audience.
Gov Ball has a base. They are absolutely still focused on putting together the best lineups possible.. Given the market, that probably still won't be enough. Dont forget AEG booked awesome lineups both years they had All Points West, they had no competion, and they still failed.
Coffee County population: 55,357 NYC population: 8,406,000
Coffee County median income: $20,357 NYC median income: $50,711
Look at the difference in population and buying power. If Gov Ball can't find people to spend the money, then that sounds like a business that should fail.
Now go look up how many shows each locale gets annually. Then check their respective costs of living.
In a place like Coffee County, a festival is a huge deal, probably the biggest event of the year. In a place like NYC, it's a drop in the bucket, and hardly the coolest or most interesting at that.
Festivals fail in the New York market because of the vast and unmatched number of competing events, most of them more cost-effective. It's not like the bands on the bill haven't played before and won't play again soon enough.
That makes a lot of sense. A company that closed a fest that wasn't making money is going to create a fest to lose money.
This whole thing makes me happy to live in Chicago. We put on a fest about every other week in the summer. If lineups suck people don't go. People let their wallets decide. The promoters focus on making their fest the best it can be. Nobody fucking cries about it. We have better pizza too.
Laugh while you can. AEG is coming to destroy Chicago next. I'd be getting my petitions ready if I were you.

Who gives a shit? Pizza is just another unexceptional thing that Americans severely overrate on daily basis. I say this as someone who grew up on Long Island.
I really enjoy NY and Chicago Pizza. When I lived in the Bay Area as a kid there was a deep dish place called Windy City. It ruled. And I ate lots of pizza in NYC. Basically pizza is great.
